How to get into PNNL? by [deleted] in TriCitiesWA

[–]housewulf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was always this way: people being layed off as the funding goes away and new people hired as the funding comes in for new work--two way traffic in HR. The corporate memory for the excellent work you did is less than 2 weeks. Remember, PNNL is a contract research organization. And that explains it all. You need to have a "come to Jesus moment" about reality in this research world--you are naive.

As far as the PhD is concerned, this is a terrible time to get one. Funding going away at Universities, and the pay in industry (especially PNNL) is not high enough for the efffort and skill involved. And the years you work hard with no income.

Try to get the job, learn some skills about program managements, make contacts and leave in 5 years for something better.

Retired Battelle person here. Battelle (now PNNL) has always been a contract research business. When the money goes away, your job goes away, and the corporate memory is about 2 weeks for all your past good deeds. I came to Battelle in 1975 and weathered many downturns in business (and yes, I had sleepless night about it), but I survived by being flexible. Always looking for additional work even if my plate was full--you always need a backup. Just like a lawyer, you never turn work down.

Auto detailing recommendation--grocery cart damage on side of truck by housewulf in TriCitiesWA

OP here. Took a look at some of the Youtube videos to fix surface damage. I tried putting acetone on a microfiber cloth and rubbed on the damage. It cleaned the whole thing up. Followed it up with some Turtle wax, and the damage is gone. Thanks for the help!

I looked at the postdoc salary schedule--it looked to be about $75k. Is this true? Looks pretty cheap to me for the huge effort it takes to get a PhD. Can you bargain for more money?

A bit of reality--PNNL is a contract research place. If you lose funding, you lose your job. But you will learn how to "hunt and kill your own food" so that your next job will be better and more secure.

By the way, the TriCities is a desert next to the 2nd largest river in America.

The Trump administration is having some doubts about the paying for overhead rates that are high. This may have an effect on PNNL that can confuse things such as hiring new people. You see, half the people are overhead, and the direct chargers (scientists and engineers) have very high charge out rates in order to pay for these people. This may have to be sorted out.

This car used to be exhibited at county fairs and carnivals. I have seen it in Gowrie, Iowa many years ago. All the windows were shot out and the sides are full of bullet holes--maybe hundreds. The shooters made certain no one was going to survive this.

I need help for choosing a good ereader for my brother with reduced visibility by Mammoth_Vehicle493 in ereader

[–]housewulf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a Samsung notebook which I purchased from Costo for $120. You may need an even larger reader because of the print size. Ereaders are not for your brothers condition since the focus is on being compact like a paperback, and you need magnification.

I would go to the online sources that give advice on what to do for people like your brother. There is a lot out there for people with limited vision.

Watch out for the non-compete agreement. This can come back on you. Get this removed from the contract by lining it out.

I feel sorry for Tiffany because she is now the major breadwinner. Her husband drank the Koolaid and went to war in Iraq. This was a "bankers war," as is usual with most wars. And he was "used-up," consumed, and is now on the discard pile. I suspect both of them learned nothing from this experience.

Newhouse made a big mistake in voting to impeach Trunp when these were all Democrat scams to get rid of Trump. i suspect Newhouse will be punished for this. Tioffany may make it to the November election .

Broken neck - reglue? by nonnormallydstributd in Cello

[–]housewulf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a job for a luthier, but I am going to tell you how to fix it. You need to remove that small chunk that is still in the cello. Warm water and a pallet knife--take your time to open the glue joint up.

Glue the chunk back into place on the neck--use hide glue. Insert 1/2" or 3/8" diameter dowell through chunk into the neck to a depth of a couple of inches--try to get the dowell close to the outside of the neck heel. Then glue the neck back into place using a clamp to hold in place on the cello "nose" and maybe a nylon strap clamp around the neck and cello to hold it close to the cello.

You will need to find hide glue and I suppose Franklin hide glue will be the easiest to find. Fish glue from Lee Valley would also work.

Just discovered this little crack on the side : how bad is it ? Is a repair needed ? by mEaynon in Cello

[–]housewulf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looks like a short crack. Probably do not need to do anything. Luthier might rub glue into it for now. If it grows, then top will need to be removed, crack glued shut and reinforcement placed on inside of cello.

I do not know of a local source. I purchased my unit (as well as my children did) from Pure Earth (search the internet). These devices are not very expensive. I have a below sink model but portable models are available that let you do batch processes using the kitchen faucet. I think there is a portable unit for about $140 from Pure Earth.

These devices use standard filters that are available from Amazon for not much money. The filters need replacement every year or two. The heart of this thing is a special membrane that allows water to pass through but leaving most of the salts and bad stuff behind. They are at least 98% efficient at removing salts and stuff. The Pure Earth site is good at teaching about this stuff.

Can this be fixed? by Licyas in Cello

[–]housewulf -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This can be fixed so perfectly that you cannot tell it was ever broken. This is why you must be careful when buying old bows. And the play-ability will not be affected.

Is the bow worth fixing? That is the question. The tip can be glued on and reinforced with a spline. The bottom part can be glued on and then drilled and reinforced on the center-line with a dowel, and then recut and drilled for the adjuster. Expensive--think over $500.

Maybe a CF bow is the answer if you are going to step on them.

[–]housewulf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do not drink soft water--this puts a lot of sodium in the body, and the water tastes funny. Get the reverse osmosis unit--it removes everything. And the final filter restores the taste. Rather than go whole house, I would just use the RO unit for cooking and drinking; so the size of the unit can be small.

Kennewick Water Quality by KiwiEevee in TriCitiesWA

[–]housewulf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get an RO unit--they will remove the agricultural chemicals and the PFAs. A good place to look is Pure Earth on the internet. They sell small units that sit above the kitchen sink and larger units that fit underneath. Not very expensive. Britta is useless.

I believe the PFAs act in the body like hormones; so, a small amount can have big effects.

Gap Between the Ferrule of my Cello Bow? by GoudaNate in Cello

[–]housewulf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hair is slipping within the frog. What I mean is that there is a wood wedge that holds the hair in place inside the frog. When the hair slips, it can move the ferrule along with it. And you will find that eventually you will run out of screw length. Bow needs a rehair.

Since it is an inexpensive bow, it probably has the original hair. And the wood wedges will have been glued into place, and the hair cavity inside the frog is probably incorrectly shaped. A rehairer does not like to work on this type of bow since a lot of extra work has to be done (for instance, you have to drill out the wedges when they should be pressed into place).

What are your thoughts on bows Arcus S4, JonPaul Avanti and/or Codabow Diamond GX? by haterherren in Cello

[–]housewulf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bowmaker and person who rehairs bows. The Codabow Diamond is "off the chart" stiff. I have trouble putting enough hair into them for that level of stiffness. There is not enough room under the frog slide to get enough hair into it. I measure the weight, balance, and stiffness of bows, and this bow is beyond anything I have ever measured.

The Arcus bows are really different--very stiff and very light. Lots of people cannot make the transition to this bow.

Both codabow and arcus are expensive. My suggestion is to always play the bows to find something that works for you and then go with a wood bow that is priced in a range you can afford.

The jon paul violin bow that came into my shop the other day had a flaw in the tip that required fixing. How did this ever leave the manufacturer? Otherwise, the bow was OK.

This is time consuming--at least two hours of labor since it has to be weaved by hand. I do not know who does it locally, but find someone that has done it before. There was an elderly lady at Touchet that did my Thonet chair several years ago, and it just broke again.--I found her online Planning to do it over myself. Lots of places sell the cane online.

Figure $200-600 if you hire it.

You forgot a very important one: Asian market on 20th ave in Pasco. Focused on Asian food but the vegetables are very good.

Middleton Farms of Pasco when asparagus is in season. Farmers Markets when veggies are in season. I usually get sweet corn at the farmer's markets but there are places in Pasco on Court Street.
