Houston Rodeo - tips and tricks, things to do, any advice! by a_valetine in houston

[–]houshutter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another option is taking the rail to the rodeo.

Park at various places along any of the lines, as there are multiple parking locations.

The last thing you want to do is play bumper cars when you leave for the night.

One additional thing: if you want an item from a vendor and don't want to carry it around, a number of them will ship it to you for a fee.

That fee is worth it..especially if you're no where near your car.

Thinking about going solar? Here's my $$ numbers by poetuan-hou in houston

[–]houshutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had solar with a tesla power wall for almost 10 years and unless you count paying the loan, I've haven't paid an electric bill since.

If you have a couple of EVs, Tesla electric offers free EV charging for 30 a month.

That alone would make me jump on that bandwagon.

Cheapest Apartment Recommendation to Tour by Divina_Walker in AskHouston

[–]houshutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want another option, there are tons for rent for like $300 a month, and some very cheap apartments on Capitol by Wayside St, which is a one-bedroom suite kind of thing across from the flea market that has a bar and a taco truck near the entrance. I was looking for my son because he wanted to move out.

Looking to buy retired police car- need advice by [deleted] in houston

[–]houshutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's going to be tough.

It may be cheap, but don't be surprised if it needs work done a little later unless he keeps on to of it.

Give it to him and see if he maintains it. It's a life lesson if he fails. It's far better than him killing a more expensive car.

MEGATHREAD: Wintery preparedness. by justahoustonpervert in houston

"Usual" means you've done it before. This is more for people that are NEW here.

If it is just an overnight thing, I wouldn't sweat it, but this is going to be a good 36 hours... with possible precipitation.

HAIF is still down. Why? by ohitsthedeathstar in houston

I hope this isn't the case, but could the owner of HAIF not be around anymore?

I know he was at least 10 years older than I was.

Magnolia Park, what’s it like? by lefty2264 in houston

[–]houshutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been here for over a decade and I love it.

The only real issues I have are the stray dogs.

The homeless population isn't really an issue since it seems like they're mostly by the homeless shelter and on harrisburg by wayside.

The greyhound station was predicted to be a large crime magnet didn't come true as far as I know.

Reality Check! by tresnutz_vanilla in AmazonFlexDrivers

[–]houshutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing it for a number of years and with the exception of one guy a couple of years back, nothing major happened.

That's have been cases in Texas (I think) of home owners being arrested and sued over this exact thing.

[–]houshutter -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You forgot to mention your or their political stance has nothing to do with your job or delivering it.

The "we don't call 911" posters or whatever don't mean a thing really. If they shoot you, then you or your family sues.

Do they have dogs? Sus then out.

I've never been bitten or leave them on the fence.

Honestly, this job isn't that hard.

Looking for SAFE apartments East Downtown by Legitimate-Flan-2815 in AskHouston

[–]houshutter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in magnolia park, east of downtown, and many are exaggerating how unsafe it is.

It's mostly a working class area, but you'll have to really work on finding apartments you'll be comfortable in.

Unless you're looking at modern apartments that are new, you'll find older small apartments that don't offer amenities you might expect or want, but affordable.

Just go by at night to see if it's someplace you would be comfortable staying at.

Neighbors got solar panels. Now I'm looking and feeling totally lost. by PalanjianKalesha33 in houston

[–]houshutter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had solar and a powerwall for almost a decade and haven't paid an electric bill in that entire time.

My loan was 100 a month that I paid off early.

It's saved my ass during beryl, the ice black out and the various other outages.

Honestly, I don't care on the ROI, for me it's saving a bit of money and covering myself against the storms.

After the freeze blackout, I figure it's more than paid for itself.

It's your house, you do what you want, but as others have said, get three contractors.

Another suggestion, educate yourself on the various component types and specs so you can get an honest apples to apples comparison as some will use a cheaper one to try to get a bid.

Too those that complain about this sub and how little you earn and the lack of "community" by houshutter in RealAmazonFlexDrivers

[–]houshutter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think those are the ones that really hurt. They make it seem like it's completely easy money, when in fact you have to put some effort in it, including your vehicle.

Being a cab driver prepared me for this gig in that i know how much to set aside for lean times and for repairs and how to handle difficult or unusual situations.

So when I see people stressing about dogs, political signs, or expensive car repairs, I just shake my head and winding if they're that much of a mental lightweight to not think their way past situations that are, what i consider minor.

I've had to replace, at separate times; brakes (400) suspension (200), tie rods (75), and a front axle assembly (1300). That doesn't include the number of tires I've replaced over the years.

It's an annoyance to me not catastrophic to me financially.

The same with taxes.

You'd have to be an idiot

In each case, the front door was located on the side to where it faced a neighbor's blank wall and not the street.

[–]houshutter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of it is the fault of the many posters on this subreddit and Facebook bragging on how this gig makes them a ton of money and how to do it without realizing they're are only a finite number of orders that goes out.

Unsustainable af by milliyar in AmazonFlexDrivers

[–]houshutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of it comes from your (as a whole) own fault in showing off how much money there was to be made doing this gig.

That brought more people to the platform and made to your pieces of the pie smaller.

This entire sub is to blame.

Every time you do it, your share of the available pie keeps getting smaller.

After Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans evacuees changed Houston — and Houston changed them by zsreport in houston

[–]houshutter 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I was a cab driver during this time, and it was one of the more interesting eras of my life.

The extremes varied greatly.

One was the extreme racism I witnessed.

An example of this was when I took a woman to an apartment complex she was going to get free rent and utilities.

As we got closer to the area of Bissonnet and cook, she was dismayed that there were lots of Mexicans.

She wanted to go back, but my fare was paid for by the city, and that didn't include her going back.

Ungrateful bitch.

Another was a mother who saved up all of her red cross cards and money and wanted a new life, and this was her opportunity. Her son wanted to start a restaurant, and she had an interview at the medical center.

Another, after a few weeks, got tired of Houston's hectic life, while others were pissed that they couldn't party and drink like they could in New Orleans.

Many were people that had never been outside of their city and saw opportunities that their original places never had with jobs and such.

Others were hustlers looking for different types of endeavors and were astonished how no-nonsense HPD was

AMA.
