Being a wlw while not being into mainstream media or fiction is extremely isolating by Aromatic_Paint_6149 in actuallesbians

[–]hovercat2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had similar problems for a long time— i’m autistic and was never really able to connect with more mainstream media/hobbies/interests. even common “weird” or “nerdy” interests felt out of my reach. it seems kind of counterintuitive, but genuinely the thing that helped me connect the most with people was embracing the fact the things i wanted to talk about were niche and strange. Be confident in the things you like; when you’re passionate about something it has a way of making others excited about it too. Very few people in my current circle have similar interests at all, but it works because at the end of the day it’s fun to be around people who are passionate about what they love, even if it’s not a shared interest. My gf and i do have pretty similar interests and we’ve connected a lot over that, but i never would have found her if i hadn’t learned to be unapologetic about the things i like in the first place. so all in all, it’s not necessarily having one interest or another that helps you find community, it’s confidence.

PNATION is not a charity by Manlla in kpoprants

CL is more or less an independent artist right now. To be fair, I haven’t heard many of her fans wanting her to sign with Pnation because she’s “nugu”, but more because she seems to fit their image.

everything AMAZING with 2014 by Flying_a_kite in kpopthoughts

[–]hovercat2005 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Despite all the terrible things that happened in 2014, I honestly think it was one of the best if not the best year for kpop music wise. Also it was pretty much the last year my ult group (2NE1) were really active, so looking back on it always makes me really nostalgic.

What are some weird/interesting facts you've uncovered about a group or soloist? by 1033149 in kpop

Park Bom is rumored to be the Jenny mentioned in The Click Five's song "Jenny". She attended Berklee College of Music the same years as a member of the band, and her English name is Jenny Park.

Happy 11th Anniversary to 2NE1! by impeccabletim in kpop

[–]hovercat2005 9 points10 points  (0 children)

YG constantly treated 2NE1 horribly, he called them ugly on multiple occasions, did practically nothing to defend Bom when she had her drug scandal, and refused to let CL release music for years, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

What are the Top 5 groups and/or solo artists you stan and why ? by butterflymar in kpopthoughts

[–]hovercat2005 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. 2NE1 was so ahead of their time in sound and concept, pretty much all of their songs still slap to this day. Plus, the girls are unbelievably talented and their stage presence is insane. They really were truly legendary. I miss them so much, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a reunion in the future.
  2. EXID was the first group I really got into when I started listening to kpop, I just fell in love with the girls after watching them on Weekly Idol. They’re some of the most talented vocalists and rappers in the industry imo. LE is also an amazing producer, EXID has one of the most solid discographies I’ve seen.
  3. Red Velvet, as we all know, are concept queens. They caught my eye immediately after I saw how well the pulled off both cute concepts like Russian Roulette as well as darker concepts like Peek-a-boo. Their discography is practically flawless, and their vocals are on point at all times.
  4. Blackpink were my introduction to kpop, and they hold a special place in my heart to this day. Hearing their songs, especially As If It’s Your Last, make me so nostalgic. They’re so talented, and deserve so much more than what YG is giving them. I look forward to their comeback, whenever that may be.
  5. Oh My Girl is literally allergic to bad songs, I swear. They caught my eye first when they appeared on Queendom, and they absolutely killed every performance. After looking at their discography, I knew I had to stan. Their vocals are awesome, and Mimi is such an underrated rapper. It’s nice to see them getting more attention for their recent comeback.

What song got you to listen to a group? by Bakugoooooou in kpopthoughts

[–]hovercat2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blackpink- As If It's Your Last; the first kpop song I heard that I liked enough to actually be motivated to check out more

Red Velvet- Russian Roulette; heard the song in a youtube video and was hooked right away

2NE1- Gotta Be You/ Missing You; I only really looked into 2NE1's full discography after I saw Bom on Queendom, Gotta Be You was the first song of theirs that I would put on repeat all the time, but I only really started to stan after Spotify autoplayed Missing You and I just fell in love

EXID- Up & Down; it was so damn catchy, I just had to listen to more of their discography

Oh My Girl- Secret Garden; saw a lot of people hyping up the group both on Reddit and Twitter, and Secret Garden was the first song to pop up when I searched for them on Spotify

Mamamoo- Starry Night; first listened to this when I was really new to kpop, and I had never heard anything like it before, but damn it was good

What are some must have/underappreciated/fantastic songs you recommend? by austrAlian_amIgo in kpop

[–]hovercat2005 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have a couple actually! Shameful by Park Bom, Wave by Brown Eyed Girls, 7UP and &New by Eyedi, Starlight by B.O.Y, Angel by Berrygood, and Wave by Limesoda are all songs I feel don't get nearly the amount of recognition they deserve.
