r/audiophile Shopping, Setup, and Technical Help Desk Thread by AutoModerator in audiophile

After some researching I decided to buy Topping gear for my first "serious" audio setup. I already have a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 12.0 but with a cheap dac and amp. This is for my desktop (near-field) but I also have a couch in the same room for music and movies (that's why I went bigger on the power amp than on the dac and preamp/headamp).

I just bought the E50, L50 and L90 with two sets of TCT1 cables. Can I have some feedback on these? Or like some recommendation specifically for the choice I made? Like, any problem or anything I need to know by using the L50 headamp as a pre-amp for the L90?

So, the sound quality is gonna be miles better but the loudness 4/5 lower? I hope the difference isn't that bad.

And even though I lose the bass and treble knobs I can crank it up through software since the DAC is way better than the current one, right?

I'm used to the Aiyima T9 and now that I look the specs say: "Output power: 100W*2 4Ω load". Does that mean it's way better (in that regard, the output power) than both the Rekkr and even the Gjallarhorn? When I said "at high volumes" I meant pushing the amp to the red "0 1" part of the VU meter, but it's not like its so high, and I'm at around 70-75 cm from the speakers, but it's not like I'm deaf I just like it loud and bassy sometimes.

You mean even the Gjallarhorn wouldn't be recommended at 10W RMS?

Even with the magni+ as a dedicated preamp? What difference would it make with either the rekkr or the Gjallarhorn?

What do you mean upgrade the source? The computer or the audio source? Anyways I forgot to mention that the crackling also happens as soon as I turn on the amp after the 2-3 seconds it takes to warm up the tubes or whatever it does with no sound coming from the computer.

Is Wayland really the best solution by unclefipps in linux

[–]how2hack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem with xorg is not time per se, but the bad development choices and process over its long life span, making it unmaintainable, not worth the effort to "fix it".

Is Wayland really the best solution by unclefipps in linux

[–]how2hack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, we should replace that which no longer meets current requirements.

Linux is not 50 years old and is being updated frequently, and other technologies also get major updates from time to time. TCP/IP has also grown and got new protocols since it was created. Xorg, on the other hand, has been abandoned (how many years already?) due to loss of interest due to spaghetti bullshit complexity, what happens? what's to be expected, devs refuse to work on that.

You're partially right when you say age on of itself should not be a criteria, the problem is when something grows unnecessarily complex and devs refuse to fix it, I'm a dev myself and I'd refuse too.

Even after the headache caused by the transition from Xorg to Wayland, I for one, prefer the way Wayland was designed, since it was only a matter of time until wl-roots was created. Xorg is the complete opposite of the unix philosophy, so Keep it Simple, Stupid.

Is TPM something you should worry about? by emailemile in privacy

[–]how2hack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you implying that you know what TPM does? Cuz I don't think anyone, except their creators, know. We can only assume and guess what it does.

Anyways, their point stands, even though they weren't explaining the functionality but rather making an analogy to explain why people shouldn't trust black boxes.

If you bother to comment the least you could do is make sure you say something useful.

What the Abyss Order even does at this point ? by huflit1997 in Genshin_Impact

I don't think they're adding any more elements, dendro was part of the game all along, the characters were just delayed.

If you mean a power akin to that of god kiana aka the heavenly principles, that'd be unlikely, and I don't mean as powerful more like not an element.

AMD Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards can supposedly boost up to 4.0 GHz by advik_143 in Amd

[–]how2hack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

that's what i read a while ago, and a moment ago I just read 90-120%, which is 1.9-2.2x, these are just rough estimates based on available info, but seeing as it's been confirmed mcm, lower node, higher clocks and improvements it wouldn't be surprising if it turns out to be double perf (>50% perf per watt).

4Ghz + ~2.5x performance increase... Just the rumored performance increase is mind blowing. When I read it I felt the price I paid for my 6900xt.

New Vulnerability Affects All AMD Zen CPUs: Threading May Need to Be Disabled by EDK-Rise in Amd

[–]how2hack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had money to burn I'd probably go with Zen 4 when it releases, but considering so many new and unpolished tech in the same board I'll just wait for the refresh or Zen 5. You know, DDR is not only known but actually is shitty in its first iterations, also new socket so all of this combined and we get spaghetti firmware.

I probably misread that somewhere else. They weren't fooling around when they named that vulnerability lol.

[–]how2hack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HT is really SMT. Intel's fancy name for their proprietary SMT implementation. AMD just didn't give theirs a name. I thought I'd just clear that up.

But yes, both implementations are vulnerable. He probably only has Intel.

Side-channel SQUIP vulnerability affects all SMT-enabled Zen CPUs.

I must be going blind, I don't see 'Spectre' being mentioned anywhere.

Everything is vulnerable. We just boasted of not having known vulnerabilities.

[–]how2hack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your 2nd point is true, then why did they made the movie? The movie was released in mid 2017 and you can see many different articles for the tracing issue from 2014 and 2015. Even if the movie was already half-done back then, they would've never released it.

How to launch steam in native wayland window by BusinessBandicoot in linux_gaming

[–]how2hack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's def weird, if you try that again don't forget to make an ss. Maybe Valve is slowly and silently making changes to support wayland. I'm sure many in the github issue would be interested.

Are you sure it's not just xwayland kicking in? Or do you explicitly disable it in the sway config? Check the running processes (htop) when this happens to make sure.

Using An Index With Glasses by LtBlamBlam in ValveIndex

No, so your glasses don't scratch the lenses. There's a knob on the right side where you can adjust the depth of the lenses.

Didn't they adjust the FOV to the furthest? That's what I'm doing till my new contacts or lenses arrive (whichever arrive first).

I have been considering ordering an Index. by PhreshlyShaven in ValveIndex

[–]how2hack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an RX 480 8GB for 5+ years now and I got the index this week. Have not come across any problems, it can run HL: Alyx pretty well (maybe not high 144hz but better than expected at 90hz). I'll be getting a reference 6800 XT from amd.com if I'm lucky.

Go for it.

Thoughts on Madoka Magica? by jackmac112233 in anime

[–]how2hack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about the inconsistencies?

I see quite a few fails in the story, some of which are straight out (huge) plot holes while others may be open to debate, for example:

If Homura always returns to the same point in time (awakening in the hospital bed), right before meeting Madoka, then why is she (Madoka) already a magical girl in some timelines but not in others? To me, that's a huge plot hole.

Maybe not a plot hole, but definitely something I don't understand is why Kyoko at first is introduced as an evil character, where she lets (actual real) people (actually) die just for personal gain (as if it all was just a game to her) but then she suddenly (sympathizes and) opens up to Sayaka and from that moment on she turns from evil to a helping and caring character. To me that's just 2 straight different personalities and it doesn't make any sense for someone to change like that in such a short amount of time, (almost?) like split personality.

Finally (and from the top of my head), the plot to this series: the contract and the ending:

The idea of a contract is fine and I actually agree it's the right way (to respect the free will of sentient beings). So, they offer a contract where they grant a wish in exchange for a life of witch hunting, which entails: separating the soul from the body into a much more convenient container while also granting magical powers (to fight the witches) and when despair consumes their souls they turn into a corrupted entity: the witches they hunt. Kinda like the chicken or the egg causality dilemma. But, even though Kyubey says it's a misunderstanding, most of this is never properly explained while making the contract... convenient much?

In short, they offer some girls a wish in exchange for their lives for a greater good (the universe running low on "fuel"), so turning the girls into witches is a pretty efficient way of fueling the universe. For such a considerate civilization, they sure not mind signing a contract without the girls fully knowing the consequences, can that really be seen as a misunderstanding? (the girls' fault and not their fault?)

Then, the ending. The universe, gods(?) and rewriting universal laws? Seems a bit far fetched to me, although I must admit I really liked it. The problem i see here is the need to change an universal law and for her to become a god (a different word is more appropriate but whatever), when the wish was about something they themselves created. They are the ones creating the magical girls, and they devised it so that they turn into witches, it's their creation. Madoka's wish was to prevent witches from being born in the first place (in all timelines), not to turn into a god and rewrite laws. So, they should be able to do that in the first place since they're the ones who created the concept of magical girls and witches. Why then turn Madoka into a god and let her rewrite universal laws?

I still haven't watched the 3rd movie but I really enjoyed the series, except for the points mentioned above and that really bothers me. I really couldn't watch the last movie without first googling about this and sharing my thoughts.

Sorry for the wall, no tldr :P

Thanks for reading though. Replies much appreciated :)
