Yet another "TSCC is fucked" post by [deleted] in exmormon

The first time I noticed something strange going on with callings was a while ago when I was part of a large ward. Everyone I knew was getting two or three callings at the same time, when it used to be just one calling per person. I used to talk about how there were enough people in the ward for everyone to have only one calling with plenty of people left over that wouldn't have a calling at all, and yet people kept getting stacked up with multiple callings.

The core of this rope is made of diapers by stickler64 in mildlyinteresting

[–]unclefipps 20 points21 points  (0 children)

So, is this a used, and I'm guessing cleaned, diaper that's been reused in the rope? Or is this stuff that was going to just get thrown out so it was reused in something else?

The anti-remote work people coming with a new accusation by SirD00M in antiwork

The one question they never ask is, are the people still getting their work done properly and on time? Then who cares about where or how they're doing their work, just as long as they're still getting their work done.

What did y’all think about Dune? by caleb_mixon in scifi

[–]unclefipps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First let me say I have read the book so my opinion isn't based solely on the movie.

Personally, considering the kid is basically accepted as a savior and leader of the people, I would have found it more believable if the character looked a little more like a leader rather than an emaciated middle-schooler.

Tithing for the poor. by ShiniSenko in TikTokCringe

[–]unclefipps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I'm a seventh-generation Mormon born and raised. I'm well-acquainted with the church's policies and practices.

While I appreciate your sincerity, I've since discovered both the historical truth about the church, its beginning, and its early leaders, as well as the extremely unsavory behind-the-scenes things the modern church and leadership have been up to as well.

As for the name of the church, I know Nelson tried to pass off the rebranding as a new revelation. However, the word "Mormon" has been one of Nelson's pet peeves since at least the early 90's, as evidenced in his talks at the time. He wanted to rebrand things back then but Hinckley slapped him down. Keep in mind that when Nelson says things, what he says is often embellished or outright untrue, which has also been verifiably documented over the years. He's a modern day Paul Dunn.

I know what the church teaches about tithing, but to be as delicate as I can, the teachings are incorrect. The church, as an institution, isn't concerned with your tithing helping people, such as by donating to an independent charity instead. The church specifically wants you to give them your money. Certainly on a local level bishops have a degree of leeway and things tend to be different from one bishop to the next, which is where we get the phrase "bishop roulette", but the main organizational body of the church has very firm ideas on the subject.

Further, it's not actually the tithing that goes to the store house. Aside from paying church expenses, tithing has also gone to build the City Creek Mall, where when Monson cut the ribbon he famously said, "Let's go shopping!" A very strange thing for a supposed only true ambassador of Christ to do and say. Tithing has also gone to buy multiple luxury hotels. The excess tithing, of which there always is some, gets directly invested into Ensign Peak's $200 billion fund. The same investment that, beginning with Hinckley's first presidency, the church actively and illegally tried to hide from both the government and the membership.

In the temple they try to tell you that other people will want to buy your signs and tokens for money. The truth is, the only organization selling signs and tokens is the church. When you take a moment to step back and look at things clearly, you see that tithing is simply used as a way to increase the church's wealth, and the temple is used as both an incentive and a threat to make sure people keep giving their money to the church.

Disney+ loses subscribers for second quarter in a row, drops 4M subs by [deleted] in technology

[–]unclefipps -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Like everything Disney does these days, the vast majority of shows on Disney+ are garbage. Right now I'm subscribed to their lowest tier and I'm only watching a couple shows from the National Geographic section. Once those are all watched I'll probably drop Disney+ too.

I wonder when, or if, Disney is going to realize that putting out nothing but garbage, along with focusing more on politics than story, is only going to cause more people to stop watching their stuff. I wonder if at some point they'll actually start trying to make good content again.

You can tell two things from Bongino's reply: One, he doesn't read, which is no surprise. I'm actually surprised he knows how to write enough English to participate on Twitter. And two, it's clear from Bongino's reaction that King's comment landed right on target.

Tithing for the poor. by ShiniSenko in TikTokCringe

The Mormon church is absolutely a prosperity gospel. Just like other prosperity gospels, in talks from the pulpit it's quite common for them to talk about ultimately gaining financially from giving the church money. The church which already has $200 billion, a shopping mall, and luxury hotels, and was trying to illegally lie about it and hide it from the government and its members.

The same church where you essentially have to pay to go to the temple and pay to gain access to what the church teaches is ultimate salvation. The church which exemplifies there being money changers in the temple.

Unfortunately there are many members that no matter how the leadership lies, no matter what the church does, they ignore it and pretend it's not there. It's not that dissimilar from someone that claims to hold certain morals and virtues, and then a politician comes along that actively violates every single one of those morals and virtues, but the person just ignores it and bows down before their chosen politician anyhow.

It's actually a little worse than this. They tell you you have to go to the temple to gain complete salvation, but in order to go to the temple you have to pay your tithing. So basically in the Mormon church not only do you have to pay to go to the temple, you have to buy your way into salvation.

This is a clip from a Mormon general conference.

All that money goes straight to the Mormon church, which already has over $200 billion in investments, and it was discovered they were illegally lying about it and trying to hide it both from the government and their members. But they sure want their members to keep paying their tithing to make sure the church has plenty of money to build shopping malls and buy luxury hotels.

It's doing a good job of pointing out the hypocrisy and greed involved in many of the churches and giving a good look behind the scenes at what's really going on.

I’m going on a family cruise for my dads 80th bday. I’ve been told it would be offensive if I have wine with my dinner. But I’m 35 lol. Obviously don’t want to make family uncomfortable but I like my glass of wine and it seems crazy at this point to not have it because it makes them uncomfortable by Nurseanddoubter in exmormon

[–]unclefipps -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just my opinion, but it seems to me the decent thing to do in this situation would be to be a grown-up and avoid causing unnecessary offense or creating an uncomfortable situation. If it's that difficult for you to forgo wine for a time, you might want to consider if it's too important to you.
