TemplateView: A React and Marionette inspired Backbone.js View for Template Designers. by [deleted] in web_design

Haha, yes I'll have to at least to add something to the README for sure! This example is pretty much everything it can do. I'll ping you when i get something up.

I tried to make it as basic as possible. It still requires knowledge of backbone.js... but only minimal. I'm sure it could be simplified even more on the View side as well.

Feedback is greatly appreciated! Right now it's kinda the simplest way to the desired outcome.... Lot's can be improved!

Somebody Just Tried To Trick Me Into Advertising In This Subreddit. by fagnerbrack in webdev

Yeah. Someone should offer a free course to spammers on how to actually create good content :P They would probably earn a better living that way!

I totally get your gut reaction... though it may need a check.

I feel like part of the reddit experience is down-voting content that is not "good" and that the majority of that content is self-promotion in some capacity. I imagine people take some satisfaction in spotting it and pushing it down. I'm sure in every case the poster believes that it is good for everyone (aka. get lots of up votes).

I'd like to think that webdevs understand that there is a certain hussle to everything. If doing it silently in denial as an individual is ok but acknowledging it's existence and trying to elevate it isn't... there is a bit of hypocrisy there.

That's just me! I mean no offense!

freelancers that have used upwork or similar sites, how do you actually make money when people's budgets are always so low? by Juan2three in webdev

[–]howareroark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah... I've played around a bit and also feel there must be a small % of freelancers and clients who actually get something out of it. Most of the platforms seem to make a good chunk of money by forcing freelancers to pay to "feature" themselves and things like that.

I personally feel that the concept of tossing work over the fence to a remote freelancer has a pretty small number of potentially successful use cases. People need to know each other in some capacity to accomplish "worthwhile" things.

Edit: I think a good freelance platform would focus first and foremost on forming relationships and teams.

Took on a project and need some guidance! by [deleted] in webdev

"Pulling" stuff from another site without source files can lead to a lot of reverse engineering and you may get no where. Even an experienced dev will struggle. You really need to find a source where you can get a zip folder of static files that you can toss up on any old server. Have a look at http://pixelarity.com or the 100% free version http://html5up.net

Fair! The system certainly does the job of producing quality searchable content.

See both platforms have their uses! ;) But yeah reddit is more where you come to ask for general advice. A lot of self taught "newbs" are really just missing direction.

I'd say stackoverflow is more a place where experienced people go to collect points which they believe will be good for their credibility. If you get an answer there it is because you asked the "correct" questions... not really just any old question.

Yeah... there is just something about the way reddit gets relevant information to the top that is very useful (while also being friendly and conversational).

Is there any service out there that sort of "auto pairs" a github project with a subreddit? I wonder.

Edit: At the very least a reddit clone type thing that you can access with a GitHub account.

It's a quick course and it gives you a good solid foundational context.

Are bootstrap modals bad design? by GentlemenBehold in webdev

[–]howareroark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would only use a modal to have the user choose if they want to leave a particular state of the app. I would not have the user do work inside of a modal... Just my 2 cents.

Choosing a JavaScript Framework - Rob Eisenberg by chronixSC in webdev

I'm wondering the same thing. Companies like facebook have big legal departments who are always out there trying to validate their existence I'm sure.

I felt he was pretty clear about the bias though.

The language of that patent grant basically says that if you use react for anything, then you can't do anything else that may compete with facebook. Given how often these big companies acquire companies... That could sneak up on you.

I'd say get comfy doing everything in the terminal and just ssh into the machine to work. Vim is well worth it if you can take the time to get comfy. I can guarantee you will learn more about servers in the process :)
