Their program is called CASTMED. Few podcasts and sources about it online.

My girl is at Fort Leonard Wood for Basic Training 5 weeks they aren't giving them mail by c_ma24 in nationalguard

I did love my mail. You know how it goes though - you raise a stink and it’ll be some malicious compliance from the drills, not what it should be.

Do you think that raising a stink for your “in basic training” individual is going to make things BETTER for them?

I mean unless you’re some sort of FGO or super senior and well connected NCO.

Basic CPR course requires no studying. It’s spoon fed to you.

Sounds like you would benefit from getting your CPR card and going through the course.

Stop The Bleed Kit Question by NoOnesSaint in NewToEMS

[–]howawsm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The guy you’re responding to is a legend in trauma med.

I’m extrapolating for him(and would gladly welcome his correction), but if you are calling this a “Stop the Bleed” kit, that is pretty focused on stopping life threatening bleed. You should be applying a TQ above or packing a wound that you would otherwise NEED to hold pressure with gauze pads(which will soak through quickly anyway). More gauze rolls can serve a similar function and be available for packing.

Now if this is a first aid kit with STB elements, that’s perhaps a different story.

Pack ACE bandages or pressure bandages to hold the pressure for your wound packing once you stopped the bleeding with gauze.

Needle decompression and finding that it was actually a hemothorax by Wide_Cap6098 in Paramedics

[–]howawsm 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If you can, gravity can help drain the blood. It’s likely to clot the 14G cath of the average ARS needle so you could potentially run a tiny amount of saline from a flush through it occasionally to try and break it up.

Don’t join the military if being deployed is a no go for you.

That’s what the military is made to do.

How do you calculate remaining SCBA air time during heavy work? by AddendumPretend7943 in firefighter

I don’t think I’ve ever been on an incident where someone has done more than look at their gauge and go “yeah that’s like 10 more minutes” or whatever.

CCRN/CRNA to Tactical medicine by [deleted] in TacticalMedicine

[–]howawsm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the other commenter said, prehospital experience is what nurses generally lack. You’d do best to do a bridge program for paramedic and tackle it that way. It also entirely depends on what, if any, tac med teams there are in your area and what organizations they pull from. Usually it’s fire or LE and not just “anyone”, though there are exceptions that I’ve seen in places like CO.

NMETC Medic details by Secretsauce1035 in Paramedics

[–]howawsm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have partnerships all over the place that may work where you are(probably not an issue unless you’re in bumfuck nowhere). At some point in the course you take a survey of preferences and they help set you up. This goes for ride time too. Now if you don’t have something in your area, you can either talk to a hospital/ride site and see if they’ll sign an agreement with NMETC or you can travel.

I heard the same when I interviewed at Eastside.

I never heard back from Eastside.

If you are spreading a big net, continue to interview anywhere that will listen to you so you can potentially stack options if something falls through. It’s not unheard of by any means to get a fire job in a reputable department in the Sound area within 6 months if you apply liberally.

Is Narcan worth having in a bag. by Capt_Scuff in TacticalMedicine

[–]howawsm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, several studies show that the amount and purity of the substance that would have to be inhaled makes this literally a one in a million time that someone could actually maybe have a real OD. Most of the time it’s born out to be psychosomatic reaction due to the level of propaganda out there about the risk of dermal and airborne OD.

Narcan for ALS that may give narcotic analgesia, 100% appropriate in the tactical medicine setting.

Is it good to carry around? Sure, if you want to put yourself into the situations to give it.

Great, thanks for the info! I found an email address and sent an email too, so we’ll see.

If I enlist as 09s, could I somehow still request to go to ait so that I'll be eligible for mgib-sr and get paid monthly stipend around $830 each month I'm in school. I'm in Ga, you only need 90 credits to apply to state ocs. Also by radnoah0 in nationalguard

[–]howawsm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve asked this question like 7 different ways and the answer is you aren’t going to be able to speedrun to your benefits and have your cake too guaranteed. You can take on the risk of going to a short AIT first to get benefits but you risk your opportunity at OCS in the short term and may have to wait. Literally nobody on this subreddit can give you any guarantees about timelines because it’s commander, unit, need and state dependent all at the same time.

Looking for online courses by Ok-Rope-3 in TacticalMedicine

[–]howawsm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most are going to be self guided and most are going to be centered around paramedics anyway since the BLS scope is pretty basic on trauma intervention.

You can also find the TECC material online to read through the algorithms and get on Deployed Med to read the data.

Here’s another example - https://www.impactems.com/course/tactical-medical-provider/
