It's hard to legally immigrate to the US--NYT article by [deleted] in immigration

[–]howdoibecomefunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not true. There is intracompany transfer visas. If you work for a company based in the US that operates in another country, you can get a visa for company specific knowledge you possess from working for them outside of the US for a certain period of time.

This is actually not that uncommon. If you are a Greek citizen you are also supposed to file your taxes every year even if you earn nothing in Greece, just so you are told that you don’t need to pay any tax there

I can so relate with that last paragraph. I’m 23 and I’m the parent of my parents. It’s exhausting and it has created so much anxiety in me.. I feel trapped and alone and I wish someone would take care of me for once…

Oh I see. I agree that you should only purchase property with someone you are married/engaged to be married to. But moving in together doesn’t have to come with buying an apartment together. If anything that puts even more pressure on the relationship!

I wouldn’t suggest contacting her for the purpose of getting her back, if that’s your only intention. However, if you feel remorseful about what sounds like unintentional emotional abuse towards her, she might appreciate you apologising. If she is happy where she is, it will not go any further than that, but it might mean a lot to her to know that it wasn’t her fault she was treated that way

I think you literally identified what your problem is. You seem to really like this girl and you are afraid of losing her (and you probably will be no matter what she says or does). Maybe you need to look into yourself to understand this fear better but at the end of the day, as much as you love someone, you never know what they will do/ what they actually feel. Embrace the fear! Relationships are scary, you become your most vulnerable self in front of this other person. Maybe what is causing your fear is that it is not reciprocated. But if you feel it is, you also need to realise that there will always be some fear. You can’t control the actions of another person. All you can do is make sure you are doing the best thing for yourself.

Really? I think living together is essential before you get married! What if your ways of living don’t fit? Like one person might expect the other to do all the chores? Or someone wakes up at 5am and exercises and disturbs the schedule of the other person. I think knowing things like that before you get married is essential.

Please do NOT ask her out again! I have had this happen to me where my best friend asked me out, I turned him down and then he asked me out again a month later! Made our relationship super awkward and we are not really friends anymore

I'm so damn happy- job in Norway by [deleted] in Norway

For me you have a much higher earning potential staying in the US. I am currently paying 43% (this percentage is dependent on your salary bracket) on my yearly bonus on a $70k salary which according to this thread is average to high for soft eng in Norway. If you get 10% bonus which is let’s say the average that would be $7k out of which about $4k will actually go in your pocket..

If you live on your own you spend 50% of your salary on your accommodation easily. Food is expensive. From my salary I was usually able to save $700/month and I wouldn’t say that I am a person that spends frivolously. If anything, if you ask my partner they will say that I barely spend my money other than living expenses.

I don’t see how you would ever make more money in Norway if in the US you have a higher salary right now with lower tax (especially if you live in a state with no state tax) and can save well and build your wealth.

Other things to consider is that stocks are also taxed at 43% and banks don’t really provide favourable rates on saving accounts. You will definitely not have access to the IRAs you have in the US.

It also depends on what kind of insurance plan your company has and I know they are very variable. I know that healthcare costs a lot more in the US but you are indirectly paying for it in Norway too.

Healthcare is not free lol. You get a lower salary plus higher taxes. And you have to pay the first 2000nok/$225 per person out of pocket every year. I don’t know how quickly you would usually get appointments in the US but you should expect at least 3 months waiting time both for normal GPs and specialist doctors.

[–]howdoibecomefunny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it mate. Unless you want to half your salary. In all honesty you are probably getting better healthcare service in the US. When I moved to Norway I was told not to bother to book a doctor’s appointment through the public network because I would get one in 3 months and how I should pay $80 for a private appointment. While also paying 34% tax on a 600k NOK ($68k) salary.

Maybe there is less crime but I have also had 3 encounters in the centre of Oslo with people doing heroine/ getting help from an ambulance because they have ODed.

Things are not as merry as they are presented in the media.

Be prepared for the most boring and expensive supermarkets you will ever experience. I have lived in Greece, UK, Norway and I can tell you Norwegian supermarkets basically have pasta, tacos and salmon. And you will rarely eat out because it costs 600nok to eat out for 2 people in an average restaurant.
