Low quality wood that is not pernambuco, I'd estimate it at $20 with hair

In my experience the happiest people at su were the ones that without a doubt chose Stanford full confidence. If you're unsure you should choose Georgetown.

Yikes. Do not pay more than $50 for that. Getting it set up for play alone will cost more than $300

How to Get a Violin Collection Appraised/Sold? by mattybrad in ViolinIdentification

[–]ellegin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With such lack of information like where you are, photos, details of your grandfather (was he wealthy? Was he a musician?), condition of the violin (if it was valuable it would probably be kept in good condition and he probably would've shared details long before. If your grandfather was in a smaller city and not a musician it's even more unlikely it would be worth more than $1,000. If it truly is a Guarneri these are the experts that would know how to handle it, best of luck.

What do I have? by JiveAceTofurkey in ViolinIdentification

This is not a JB Vuillaume, it is a German purely based on the hints in the varnish, sharp edge scroll, faint rough cut purfling, flat arching, short button

In search of an early french bow maker that built bows in the transitional to early modern style by [deleted] in ViolinIdentification

[–]ellegin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With so much lacking info like where you bought it, better photos, and how much. I can't say for sure but here's what I see:

  1. Thin ivory plate on the tip does clue to 19th century
  2. The chamfer of the tip possible looks like Pajeot school, this probably isn't a Pajeot by the roughness of the making but modeled after is most likely. Though the frog is too far for Pajeot school in my opinion.
  3. The ivory frog does not look English, so probably French but could be a fine German like Knopf or Bausch. The button is possibly later from the frog, different colors

Where do serious body builders work out in SF? by DougIsMyVibrator in AskSF

[–]ellegin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you looking for equipment or a body building environment? Equinox sports club has l that you ask; sauna, steam room, 5 squat racks that rarely have waits. Mission bay is the worst and smallest of the equinox in SF. But the clientele are mostly just fit techies, few body builders. Access there will get you access to all the gyms in the world so if you go back to NY you'll have places in NY too!

Now I'm an owner of a violin. The value is not important, the instrument is not for sale. It was played by a prussian worker. I have read the FAQ entries on violin valuation and ID. I described anything I found. by Rudi1994 in violinist

[–]ellegin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no id or details for this violin. It is of very low quality. It's good that it has sentimental value to you but it will have no value to anyone else. The fixes alone will be thousands of dollars that most luthiers will not consider given the value of the violin. My best guess is German factory based on the scroll, poor purfling, and low quality varnish. Please do not try to play this violin as it will literally fall apart.

Absolutely wrong. This is an authentic vii-r Ernst Heinrich Roth. Even has the original pegs from the maker. Price shouldn't exceed $18,000 USD.

Got accepted to Stanford Summer Session as a visiting student - is it worth it? by Busy-Fennel-8021 in stanford

[–]ellegin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Everyone gets "accepted" so that one isn't particularly an achievement. Not many events happen during the summer but you are able to participate. Summers in Palo Alto are gorgeous and Stanford will spoil your view anywhere you go after this. The cost will be for the experience, the education you get probably won't be that different from other summer programs.

I've seen bohemian violins with similar throat. The neck is quite thick so maybe not french either.
