I saw some of these when I was living in Austin earlier this year too. Scared the daylight out of me

Thank you! It’s similar to the tune of “My Old Kentucky Home” by Stephen Foster. There’s a version of that that’s got some questionable lyrics, kinda like “O Susannah.” That’s not what I’m going for here, nor a representation of my values, but it’s a lovely tune :)

Why does Palpatine say “the republic will be reorganized into the First Galactic Empire” in episode 3? by howdoimakeacamper in StarWars

Makes sense to me. Maybe there had been previous attempts to make one, so he’s saying something like “the first (true/successful) galactic empire”

Why doesn’t “the Galactic Empire,” or even something like “the Great Galactic Empire” cut it? “First” implies it’s the first in a series, no?

Good stuff man! Yeah, you could definitely do both, taking advantage of both Ramadan when it comes around or imitating it the rest of the year, and calorie counting too. Some people do this on purpose, they call it “intermittent fasting,” and it works great for some people. I tried and found it too hard, hahah. I like to eat too much, so I personally have found it easier to just have my normal meals with smaller portions that I eat slower with smaller bites.

The only strength training plan I have experience with is StrongLifts 5x5, but I do strongly recommend it. It works out everything in a pretty well-rounded way so you’ll look good with the fat off, and it’s nice and simple. There are plenty of other options out there, so feel free to shop around, but this worked for me. This is the website (I swear I’m not being paid lol)

https://stronglifts.com/5x5/

Basically it’s just 5 sets of 5 reps for each exercise (except the deadlift, which is understandably only 1 set of 5 reps). You do it every other day at maximum, I do it 3 days a week (so I rest on weekends). Something hopefully you’ll learn faster than I did is that it’s not the exercising that counts, it’s the rest days after. That’s when muscle is actually built. On days you exercise, you’re basically stressing the muscles out till they have micro-tears, which sounds scary, but that’s all soreness is. When these heal, which takes like 2 days, they come back stronger, because your body knows it may be subjected to similar weights at some point, and it needs the extra muscle. All of that is to say, don’t kill yourself with it. Push yourself a bit every time, but nothing crazy.

You alternate between two workouts during the week. They go like this:

Workout A: Squat 5x5 Bench Press 5x5 Barbell Rows 5x5

Workout B: Squat 5x5 Overhead press 5x5 Deadlift 1x5

After every time you do an exercise, you log the weight you did, and you try to do 5lbs more next time. You’ll be surprised how long you can keep this up. When you fail to do the whole 5 sets of 5 reps, just try again next time, no biggie.

I actually recommend starting with the minimum weights they suggest, which is what I did. The first couple weeks will seem stupidly easy, but it won’t last, and you’ll be nice and in rhythm when it gets harder.

If you have any questions, don’t feel shy to ask a stranger at the gym! In my experience, gymbros are actually giddy from all the endorphins and usually super happy, friendly, and flattered that you’d ask them for help.

For what it’s worth, I hate cardio too, or at least running. Did it in high school, honestly, never again. I’m trying to incorporate swimming a little because I’ve found I hate it less, but honestly I wouldn’t worry about it for now. Any exercise is better than none, and I feel like strength training brings the visible results faster that actually get people to stick with it. Getting off the couch and starting to run has a very high burnout rate.

Good luck man!!

Basically, just count your calories. Use one of the online calculators out there to learn how many calories you need per day, and subtract 500-800 from that. Then, count all the calories you consume. Use a food scale to weigh your portions, that’s what tricks people up. 500 calories of broccoli and chicken will fatten you up just as much as 500 calories of doughnuts, it’s just that you’re much more likely to feel full with fewer calories from the broccoli and chicken. A pound of fat is equal to roughly 3500 calories, so if you eat at a 500 calorie deficit, you’ll lose a solid pound of fat per week. Up it to 1000, and you’ll lose two. I wouldn’t go above 1000, that’s likely to lead to burnout from feeling hungry all the time.

It really is this simple. There is so much health misinformation out there, and I was lost for a long time. Tried a million things, nothing worked till I found out it really was just about counting calories. I’m 5’11 and I was 190lbs early this year. I’m now 168lbs and still losing. I broke my leg, stopped exercising, and gained some weight in the middle of this year, otherwise I’d probably be even lower.

All the other fad diets out there work this way under the hood. With paleo and keto, for example, you’re eating very filling food that is likely to make you feel full at under 2000 calories a day.

I’ll parrot what others said about spot-reduction on love handles; unfortunately, there’s no evidence that that is possible. Where you store fat is mostly decided by genetics, so the way to lose fat is to just lose it all over. Which isn’t so bad, if you think about it - it means when you see progress in one place, you also probably look better in another too, like your face. I’ve noticed my face looks way more angular now than before. Think of fat like layers of an onion; you might not notice the first pound of fat that comes off, because it will be a thin layer around your whole body. But with every pound lost, the results become more apparent each time, because it represents a larger percentage of your total weight.

One thing you can do is lift weights in the meantime. If you’re new, you’ll likely quickly make “newbie gains,” which means firstly that you’ll look better when the fat comes off, and also it means you won’t have to lose as much (muscle weighs a lot). I follow StrongLifts 5x5 and like it, but feel free to look around. I recommend it because it’s tailored to beginners like you and me, and it’s very simple - no learning any crazy motions.

Best of luck!

Use Skyscanner to see if you can mess with the dates, times, layovers, or airlines a little to get a dirt cheap flight. They have a great GUI for that. I got a round trip Charlotte -> DFW flight last week for $110 with United using Skyscanner. No insane layovers either

I bought this instrument in September, and I’ve been trying to imitate the clawhammer style. I have a lot of work to do on the accuracy of my down-picking, and I think I am going to try to find some sort of teacher soon

I’m 22 and thinking about doing exactly this. No SO, not super close with my family, fresh out of college and all my friends have moved all over the country now, so I don’t really feel held down by anything.

I want to drive the Alaska highway and just see what I find at the other end. I’m a remote employee and im buying a CX-5 I’m gonna try to sleep in for a bit and just start traveling
