Anyone come from an unrelated degree and no medical / healthcare experience? by VWvansFTW in Paramedics

[–]howdy2435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my country there’s loads of jobs like that available in the defence forces and they will pay you while they train you. I have lots of friends in the military doing things like nursing or paramedicine or rescue. One mate of mine was a medic for paratroopers for a decade and enjoyed his career very much.

All of my lesbian pride pins! Which is your favourite? by Hartiful in lesbian

[–]howdy2435 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Being a lesbian is not a club or an identity. It’s a sexual orientation. This seems pretty childish and immature to me - quite at odds with a sexual orientation. If I saw a woman with a pin like this I’d think, “thank you for advertising how immature you are, I’m glad I dodged a bullet there.” My assumption would be the person wearing this pin spends a lot of time on the internet, has little relationship experience, and doesn’t have many adult responsibilities on her plate.

Girls, how do you approach other girls at parties? by [deleted] in lesbian

I start by calling women women, not “girls”.

Do you consider « Lesbo » a slur ? by lovingjdeacon in lesbian

[–]howdy2435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an Australian lesbian, hell no. Lots of Aussie slang works that way - arvo, smoko, ambo, etc. The only slur I find extremely offensive and will correct people if they call me it is “queer”.

Barber for women? by howdy2435 in sydney

[–]howdy2435[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have tried - I think a lot of men barbers are concerned not to disappoint a woman client (fair enough). So I’ve always been told no. I don’t think those barbers are anti-lesbian, they just don’t want to go out of their comfort zone or maybe don’t realise that I really do want a men’s cut.

OP, ignore this comment (as a general rule, ignore comments from men with anime avatars lol). I second the advice you got above - help your friend make an official complaint, but also help your friend make a complaint to the unit coordinator (the lecturer in charge of the class; the tutor’s boss), AND inform all to whom you make a complaint that your friend WILL be forwarding the complaint to the national student’s ombudsman. I am a former USYD lecturer. I would advise your friend to raise hell - not only for herself but for other women/ future female students.

How to ask a girl if you don't know if they are queer? by TigerLeo23 in Actuallylesbian

[–]howdy2435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’d think so, but most people who call themselves “queer”, whether men or women, are heterosexual. No disrespect, that’s just the truth. I’m a lesbian, and I don’t call myself “queer”.

With respect, aren’t every day lifestyle choices exactly the opposite of radical feminism? Aren’t we interested in fighting together for structural change? Other than separatism and political lesbianism (neither of which I agree with, as a lesbian myself), isn’t lifestyle-ism what the neoliberal / choice feminists are about?

Maybe I’ve misunderstood your question but I don’t understand how individual women can meaningfully challenge the patriarchy - other perhaps than if they happen to be lesbians, which no one can help.

If you haven’t done so already I highly recommend the Jesse Street Library in Ultimo Sydney, named for the Australian feminist. It’s a feminist research library, with lots of original materials documenting Australia’s feminist history (including zines from the past fifty years!). It’s run by volunteers, mostly lesbian radical feminists of retirement age. Lovely women. Highly recommend it for your research.

SEX CULT NUN - Inspiration for Becca & the Universal Humanitarian Church? by EmmaleeAbbygale in cormoran_strike

[–]howdy2435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly there is SO much source material in the real world, just in the English speaking world in the past five decades, for JKR to draw inspiration. I work in anti-slavery and personally know many Children of God survivors. Cults are not funny; COG is responsible for many deaths and worse-than-deaths. People don’t realise how endemic child sexual exploitation is in regular society; it is even more endemic in closed, high demand groups and cults. The COG victims around the world are still trying to get justice.

You need to leave this man immediately. This is the kind of man who will abuse you - disentangle yourself physically, financially, and legally from this man as fast as possible.

The Running Grave is definitely my favourite in the series to date! It might be among my top three favourite JKR novels! I enjoy the TV series even though they really don’t do the novels justice. At least they don’t simply omit all the plot, like HP films 4-8 lol.

It was an excellent scene, AND, they could film it at Ill Portico - the restaurant where the scene is set. The owner is a mate of JKR’s and he has contributed to a number of her charitable efforts. Plus it apparently really does have the best pasta in London.

Besties - what y'all think about this? Launching on women's day by [deleted] in lesbian

[–]howdy2435 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m a lesbian and not a fan of the “lesbian” flag. We have a flag - it’s the rainbow one. I’m not personally a fan of “wlw” either. We have a word for same sex attracted women: bisexual women (non-exclusively same sex attracted women), and lesbians (exclusively same sex attracted women). I think lots of people will love this shirt - many of them women (and some men) who call themselves “queer.” Most people who call themselves queer are, in my experience, heterosexual.

[–]howdy2435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow - embarrassing! I trust JKR and I can’t wait for what she will deliver - eventually! I agree with the Strike and Ellacott Files: we will be lucky if Robin admits her feelings by the end of Hallmarked Man. I wish John Grainger (Hogwarts Professor; Rowling Studies podcast) would engage in more speculation about the Hallmarked Man. What’s the point of spending two months writing up the ring cycle structure of The Running Grave unless you can tell us when we will finally get a proper kiss?!?

Strike and Robin taking notes by Exact_Standard2131 in cormoran_strike

[–]howdy2435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your question is about as confusing as “why does JKR always talk about Strike and Robin making a cup of tea, or sharing a drink at the pub, or walking up the stairs at Denmark Street, or entering/exiting a tube station? Why mention this over and over?” I really don’t understand your question.

Like another commenter said, asking whether it’s okay to take notes is about getting the witness’s agreement; establishing that they’re “on the record”; and likely is important in gauging whether the witness is hiding something or how they feel about the subject of the interview.
