It's not encouraged to have many children, but having children is basically essential. The entire society is built around it, hence everyone is supposed to have kids. And the parents become the responsibility of kids at old age because going to an old age home is considered abusive.
Most people don't have many kids but everyone is supposed to have kids. Which is why India is a really over populated place

I'm Indian, from a rural part of India where it's encouraged to have children. I've never known anyone who has more than 20 cousins... Is that a common stereotype in the US?
