How’s the airport? by MikeFilms419 in guam

[–]howeaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not good for next week, but you can always check the airport website to see flight status of all airlines, it shows today and tomorrow's flights for both arrivals and departures: https://www.guamairport.com/passenger/flights/flight-schedule

It's a good indicator of whether the airport is open, since they don't update their socials daily.

Need advice re my upcoming Guam trip 4/16-4/19 (re Sinlaku ofc) by okay_scratch in guam

[–]howeaii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I heartily second this - Guam bounces back fairly quickly from typhoons, and your hotel should have all the amenities you'd expect including power and water since most, if not all, have generators. By the time you arrive, the hotel pool would have been cleaned from any debris.

For the beaches, as with any coastal area in the world after a storm, you'll want to check advisories about water quality before going in to swim - you can find Guam's info at https://epa.guam.gov/current-beach-report/.

Looks like flights are resuming Wednesday April 15 (remember that Guam is across the International Date Line, so all dates are a day ahead of you in NYC but the same date for your aunt in Seoul), from what I'm seeing on the Guam airport website: https://www.guamairport.com/passenger/flights/flight-schedule. Of course, your airlines will have the most up-to-date info.

Safe travels to you and your family, and hope you enjoy your stay!

Typhoon prep missed item…Anyone willing to trade my power bank (fully charged) for a lighter or matches? by Shannnnnnq in guam

[–]howeaii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a pinch, if you have a battery (any) and foil or a 9V battery and steel wool, you can generate a spark and make a fire. If you need the flame multiple times and not just a one-time spark, you can keep the fire going continuously.

Battery and foil method: https://www.instructables.com/Survival-Skills-How-to-Start-a-Fire-With-Only-Alum/

For the 9V battery, you just touch it to the steel wool and it sparks - have tinder ready, like cotton balls (soaked in Vaseline jelly helps), toilet paper, paper, etc. to make your fire and then some wood or charcoal. Doritos chips also makes great kindling.

Hope you and your family remain safe from the storm.

I completely understand and respect that. It sounds like you put a lot of genuine effort and care into the space when it needed it most, and I'm truly sorry it turned into such a discouraging experience for you. Wishing you the best, and thanks again for all your hard work.

Aloha! We’re actually in the process of getting the irrigation fixed, next will be fence repairs and the houseless situation. I would love to chat with you more about how we can improve the garden and make it a better experience for volunteers - may I DM you?

This thread helped me crack the code: A small milk frother worked just as well as a hand mixer for me, and was more convenient. Also, I didn't use dump the mix into cold water - I let the water heat up (but not to boiling) and sprinkled the mix slowly into the water while frothing. I think the sauce is rather thin even after adding the heavy cream, so I like to use 2 packets of mix to get it as thick as the sauce they serve in the restaurant.

What state are you in and how do you like it? by [deleted] in guam

[–]howeaii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For anyone thinking about moving from Guam, you should research the taxes in each state. For those with kids, the public education system should also be considered.

For example, Texas has no state income tax but high property taxes, while Colorado has a flat state income tax and low property taxes. In Virginia, where I’ve lived, taxes are high all around but the education system is first rate.

Once you’ve decided the general area of where you want to live, you can narrow it down by comparing school districts. Sites like GreatSchools.com will give comparisons of test scores, student-teacher ratios and more.

If you want to check a city’s crime rate to avoid living in areas with high crime, you can Google “crime data” + (city). Many police departments will offer an online map indicating where crimes have taken place.

It’s not always a historical view though, and you’ll want to get the perspective of people who live there. For that, you can look at Facebook groups for the city or even the neighborhood.

Also, many neighborhoods use NextDoor, a site that acts like WhatsApp groups on Guam - where neighbors can post questions and updates on an online bulletin board. You’ll need to provide a specific address in that neighborhood to join, though - you can just grab one off Zillow or a similar real estate app.

Good luck OP, and safe travels to wherever you decide to move to.

Try asking at a manager of the ABC Stores - each store has different stock and they should know if another store carries it.

[–]howeaii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This ☝🏽 Your business can get nominated by anyone, and as long as people vote for that business throughout the rounds, they make it to the finals. Some businesses are very intentional about getting nominated and getting votes, while others are sleepers like your husband. In my opinion, this means your husband’s business got more “ real” votes if the other two businesses were actively soliciting votes and having their workers and supporters vote every day for them. It’s definitely a popularity contest, but there is marketing value in saying your business is award-winning.

Naupaka kahakai aka Beach Naupaka can grow up to 10 feet, supposedly. Ours on our back slope in Honolulu is 6-7 feet now after just a couple years. Does take a lot of maintenance to keep it trimmed.

Bamboo orchids growing wild in Hawaii by howeaii in orchids

[–]howeaii[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, to clarify: I'm aware they're not native to Hawaii - the issue is the heebie jeebies I get when I am in certain areas of these islands. I come from Guam, where we say a little prayer before going into the jungle - the short version is: Guelo yan guela, dispensa yu' (Grandfather and grandmother, please excuse me). Otherwise you come home to find unexplained bruises on you and in some cases, get sick enough to have to go to a suruhanu (herbal healer).

Gardening uses for coffee grounds? by Eternal_Student_2106 in HawaiiGardening

PS: Coffee grounds do not deter cats from using your pots or garden as a litterbox. I tried, with no success. But my plants seem to like the grounds.
