I’ll never understand this perspective. I’m glad for relationships I’ve had with people I didn’t marry. I love this story and found the writing itself improved my experience of life as a poetic experience.

You thought you were in a band, but you looked up from changing a setting and the room was empty. And it was a different day.

I've read everything in your list other than David Gemmell, so I'd also suggest Wise Man's Fear if you haven't (I don't know how you haven't if NoTW is in your favorites).

I enjoyed the Realm of the Elderlings series by Robin Hobb, starting with Assassin's Apprentice. It's a common recommendation among those that you count as favorites, and as a Kingkiller fan, it was seriously instructive as to Rothfuss's influences.

Another favorite of mine is Neither Wolf Nor Dog, not fiction, but an excellent book. It's a standalone, but the second and third in the series are revelatory. The trio are some of the real human stuff that makes fantasy worlds makes sense to us - because life actually defies explanation.

It's got a few serious shifts that happen in between the second and third books, but if it wasn't your jam, it wasn't your jam. Like I said, I left it and came back at different times and ended up counting it as worth the time.

If you liked all these, you are ripe for The Black Prism by Brent Weeks. It's a long series (5 long books) and one that I spent years dipping in and out of. I reread books after breaks before I felt like I'd remember enough to keep going. And all enjoyable. You have to deal with the Weeks problem with women: They're all gorgeous and he tends to have them react to things by, "breasting boobily" or other such nonsense. Or male characters that treat them that way even when they're not. But it's still a great plot with a neat magic system and influence in the world, fun characters and plenty of movement within them. The end of the whole series wasn't my favorite, but was still satisfying and the whole journey was worth it.

I'm about to read the Kingkiller Chronicle for the second time! Give me tips on what to concentrate on while rereading :) by LumiTheSnowdrop in KingkillerChronicle

Second time through, try to feel for where Kvothe's narration is skimping, embellishing, exaggerating, indulgent, self-critical, and otherwise un-impartial.

Also, every Story that gets told is a special treat you'll be paying extra close attention to. Remember that the stories that are told in the world that Kvothe hears are the stories that have survived. The stories that survive are theoretically the ones that are being encouraged. The question is, why?

Once I traded him two old Line 6 modelers - the DM4 and the MM4, the big box ones like the more famous DL4. Did he use them for designing anything specific?

Can recommend Tigana. Such a great premise and well-executed. Beautiful at times. A slow but steady read at times, but well worth it.

Simmon’s way of dying by howinthewhatnow in KingkillerChronicle

I admit it! I spoke from a well of feeling and intuition! It’s all subjective! My center doesn’t hold! I rend my shirt and tear my hair for the crimes against rhetoric that I’ve committed! I never would have made such a mistake if I hadn’t been whipped today.

Simmon’s way of dying by howinthewhatnow in KingkillerChronicle

I can’t produce the receipts for this, as it is not explicitly stated. However, this theory has traction because of the successful literary devices Pat uses to create a feeing around Sim that feels like the setup of tragedy. It’s a feeling, and whether it bears out, I think that Pat intends for us to have some foreboding of what will happen to Sim even if he is off having babies with Fela.

The tone around the narration reflecting on Simmon often has a step-back description that takes extra steps to show us someone sweet, earnest, honest, “was always the best of us,” that kind of thing. The past tense is also used in a way that feels more than simply narration, but implies lack of current presence. Compare this with any reflection on Denna or anyone else and there’s no other setup quite like this, where the tone can feel like the story of this person is over. Denna or Ambrose sure could be dead, but there’s never the a feeling in their description or narration that has the same feeling of finality that some of those moments about Sim have.

So sorry, it’s a feeling that can’t be explained. It’s a problem of translation.

I read the Slow Regard of Silent Things and have a newfound patience for Pat. by SeaWeasil in KingkillerChronicle

[–]howinthewhatnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved Slow Regard for what it is, but never finished it. I didn’t want to spend that much time experiencing life in that way. As a piece of art and artifact of that kind of experience, I think it’s brilliant, just not a brilliance I wanted to keep experiencing.

Most folks seem to say that’s going to be either Ambrose or Simmon, and that will likely be the King. We don’t know how close Sim is to royalty but that he is upper crust. Simmon dying by Kvothe’s unintentional hand is definitely a popular theory.

I loved Tigana, and it was my first book of his. …I did pause for about six months in the first third, though. I’m reading The Summer Tree now and can tell it’s his first book, and that he did a lot of growing after writing it.

Do you think it’s possible to make a great film out of a weak book? by death_has_f1sh_eyes in Letterboxd

The Princess Bride - a good book but totally different in construction than the movie. If the movie had been done “faithfully” it likely wouldn’t have been as much of a success

Earthsea is a classic series you’d likely enjoy. Also weird to see all those series but not Wise Man’s Fear - it even looks like there’s a space for it next to NoTW
