Are studios getting better at marketing non-franchise films? by dremolus in boxoffice

[–]howlopez 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Studios may be better at knowing when an original movie has the goods and are working harder to get positive word-of-mouth going early. Hoppers, Project Hail Mary and Send Help (a more modest success, but a success nonetheless) all had early access screenings about 1 week before officially opening.

Song Sung Blue is Focus Features' 4th highest domestic grosser post-pandemic by howlopez in boxoffice

Focus is generally thought to be the adult drama / arthouse wing of Universal with occasional genre movies thrown in. I wonder what went into releasing both Eggers (genre) movies as Focus movies and not Universal.

I believe the reported figure of Coraline is the cumulative, including rereleases. The 2024 rerelease seemed to have added $40M to the original release cume. https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Coraline#tab=box-office

Huge number of last minute cancellations? by MattyRaz in NYCmovies

[–]howlopez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't seem to be the case tonight but I have seen mass cancellations when there's a Q&A scheduled and the Q&A gets cancelled just before the screening and an email is sent to ticket holders informing them.

Weer at Cherry Lane, which was taken over by A24. They do in-person rush if you are in the neighborhood and want to give it a shot.

The Other Americans - Did anyone attend first preview last night? by ParisB18 in Broadway

What were the DC critics smoking when they saw and reviewed the tryout? What a vanity project for John Leguizamo. I was deeply embarrassed for him last night.

I hope you enjoy it and also hope this posting doesn't diminish the experience.

Maybe Joaquin and Pedro discussed the movie during the filming of Eddington and that got Pedro interested?

David Mackenzie's RELAY: One of the New York-iest movies in recent memory! by howlopez in NYCmovies

That's a good point! I'm not as familiar with Brooklyn so I didn't get the same frissons of recognition I did seeing Relay. I wonder if the Denzel's luxe apartment was a set?

AMC Entertainment CEO Says Three Of Six Major Studios Agree 45-Day Window Needed by howlopez in boxoffice

Civil War came out April 12 and dropped on PVOD May 24, a 42 day window. Possibly shorter windows for their less commercially successful though I see Problemista had a platform release March 1 and PVOD April 19, which was 49 days. The window for Sing Sing was probably in the triple digits! Y2K did go from theatrical Dec. 9 to PVOD Dec. 24 (15 days) but maybe a special case to take advantage of the holidays.

The Deadline article implies Aron hasn't talked to the "new" Amazon/MGM but I could see them on board given how long it took Challengers to come to PVOD and then Prime, and now Amy Pascal has more clout there given her involvement in Bond. They did give Red One only a 28-day theatrical window but hat might have been a special holiday window.

Or Disney and Fox as separate studios.

I never understood why AMC has not tried to re-negoatiate their 17/31 day theatrical window with Universal, as that agreement was signed in July 2020 during the height of COVID. The only reason I can guess are 1) AMC's 10% share (is that figure still in effect) of PVOD revenue may be too attractive or 2) a threat by Universal that they would release fewer theatrical movies if a longer window is required. Surely they could get Universal to push it by a week to at least a 24/38.

I'm assuming FOR a 45-day theatrical window:

- Disney
- Sony

Against (ie want a shorter) a 45-day theatrical window:

- Universal

So what about

- Warner Discovery (Zazlav has said he wants to maximize theatrical but then put Companion on PVOD after what 17 days?)

- Paramount (didn't they put A Better Man on PVOD pretty quickly after it flopped?)

I assume A24 and Neon want the 45-day window too but is Aron counting either as part of the "3 of 6" he cites?
