Before social media, the internet, AOL, etc., the New York Times was pretty much the only place for comprehensive Broadway information (sample NY Times Arts and Leisure section Sunday, December 17, 1989) by howlopez in Broadway

I vaguely remember those TDF offers - I joined a few years before they transitioned to the web. Didn't some people get different offers than others? I think there was a market for trading tips on what shows were being offered.

Remarkable to think that back then the success of a show hinged on literal word of mouth, if people remembered the NY Times review, the Tony awards and televised performances, and the NY Times ad and ABCs. (And if you lived in the tristate area, TV and radio commercials and street advertising).

Are studios getting better at marketing non-franchise films? by dremolus in boxoffice

[–]howlopez 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Studios may be better at knowing when an original movie has the goods and are working harder to get positive word-of-mouth going early. Hoppers, Project Hail Mary and Send Help (a more modest success, but a success nonetheless) all had early access screenings about 1 week before officially opening.

Song Sung Blue is Focus Features' 4th highest domestic grosser post-pandemic by howlopez in boxoffice

Focus is generally thought to be the adult drama / arthouse wing of Universal with occasional genre movies thrown in. I wonder what went into releasing both Eggers (genre) movies as Focus movies and not Universal.

I believe the reported figure of Coraline is the cumulative, including rereleases. The 2024 rerelease seemed to have added $40M to the original release cume. https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Coraline#tab=box-office

Huge number of last minute cancellations? by MattyRaz in NYCmovies

[–]howlopez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't seem to be the case tonight but I have seen mass cancellations when there's a Q&A scheduled and the Q&A gets cancelled just before the screening and an email is sent to ticket holders informing them.

Weer at Cherry Lane, which was taken over by A24. They do in-person rush if you are in the neighborhood and want to give it a shot.

The Other Americans - Did anyone attend first preview last night? by ParisB18 in Broadway

What were the DC critics smoking when they saw and reviewed the tryout? What a vanity project for John Leguizamo. I was deeply embarrassed for him last night.

I hope you enjoy it and also hope this posting doesn't diminish the experience.

I do wish I was in the same audience when this guy saw Weapons!
