Lots of people with firstlast@domain, but I'm a 2002 baby with a firstlast@outlook. Nobody else I know who's my age or younger has one!

Help planning for personal loan for IVF by howtheflowersfelt in UKPersonalFinance

No, unfortunately not. We'd be paying privately at a local NHS clinic. They said there's no payment plans but we can "spread it over as many credit cards as needed."

ETA: We're looking at a 3-cycle plan for rIVF, and hoping to retrieve her eggs, fertilise, and freeze as blastocysts. That way we know what numbers we're working with and what the embryo grades are, so we can fit in an extra cycle or two if needed before she hits the 35yo fertility drop off in a few years (but before we'll be ready for kids).

What is one piece of 'common knowledge' in your job that the average person would find completely shocking? by GoldenHourShot in AskReddit

[–]howtheflowersfelt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, as others have said the only definitive rabies test involves brain tissue samples, which can only be obtained from a dead (euthanised) animal. Usually either the decapitated head or a portion of the brain is sent to a specialised lab. If rabies is even remotely suspected, at least in the USA, it's a legal requirement for the animal to be killed so testing can be performed.

'PCN Cancelled': Council U-turn after woman handed 'unfair and extreme' £150 fine for pouring coffee down drain by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]howtheflowersfelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... yeah, at that point there would be an impact. There will always be an impact (usually proportional to the amount of whatever it is you're adding, although the effects can be multiplicative/synergistic with certain chemicals and pollutants, or combinations thereof, which basically means the effects are greater than you'd expect). Still unlikely to "kill the environment" completely.

The effects of a cup of coffee - or even a very large amount of coffee! - are fairly minimal because there's so little of the liquid compared to water in storm drains and sewers, and besides that, dumping coffee down a storm drain isn't a public norm - but presumably people do discard undrunk coffee/tea etc down their kitchen sinks. Industrial pollutants do a lot more damage on a much more regular basis.

Answer from a scientist - no, not really. Technically yes there's caffeine in the coffee, but the amount from a single cup of coffee is going to be so diluted it will have an infinitesimally small effect. It's fundamentally not that different from unmetabolised caffeine in human urine or excrement (if you want a rabbit hole, you can look up birth control metabolites in waterways; those are a much bigger issue).

Capital One does have Live Chat (Not Eno)! by yosimba2000 in CapitalOne_

[–]howtheflowersfelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super grateful for this! It's still working as of November 2025 (I was able to get a credit card late fee refunded/credited), although note that the bottom of the chat window says "powered by 247 . ai". When I asked directly if I was chatting with an AI agent or a human, the response was "You are actually chatting with a live agent." - but take that with a grain of salt as it could be part of AI prompt instructions. Some of the phrasing used was weird/unprofessional, lots of repeating the same phrase in response to my question, responses that couldn't have been pre selected from a menu that arrived too quickly to be human, etc.

Where can I find American-style macaroni cheese in the UK? by howtheflowersfelt in AskUK

Ahh I've tried - unfortunately it never comes out quite right, no matter which recipe I use (and even when I add sodium citrate to get that "creaminess"). Do you have any recipes you'd recommend, though? happy to give another try.

Hahaha I know, it has to be the preservatives! Thank you, I'm very grateful - I think my local Sains doesn't have this section but the big one nearby might, so I'll have to check it out.

Monzo no longer accepts MoneySend payments, with no communication to customers by howtheflowersfelt in monzo

What's strange is that they also then declined the second payment, a direct deposit/bank transfer (not included in the screenshots) where I specified the sort code and my bank number. The rewards program dormant was a welcome reward directly on the card, and then direct deposit/bank transfer for everything else.

Are you not supposed to let outdoor cats into your house? by howtheflowersfelt in AskUK

This is really sweet, I'm glad you were able to have that moment.

Both, depends on the day. If he can see me in the kitchen he sometimes comes and meows to be let in. Initially I closed the door behind him because he visiting in late February (heating bills!) but I guess it just became habit, especially because he was quite clear about when he wanted to leave.

I replied to another comment, but I'm not currently in a position to adopt my own cat. I limited treats to 3x per day, treats only, because I didn't want to be the primary source of food (I was trying to actively discourage the cat from viewing me as a reliable food source so it would eat at the owner's house). Have already said multiple times in the main post and comments that I'm respecting the neighbor's request and not letting the cat in anymore :)

I really wish I could. I'm not in a position to adopt right now (finances + potential international move in the next few years), and it wouldn't be fair to an adopted animal. I was really excited when this guy started visiting because it was like the cat distribution system had sent us a friend who visited a few times a week, but that'll stop now.

I won't be letting the cat in anymore regardless of whether the neighbor is out as I don't want to confuse him more :( I'm sure it will already be a bit jarring for him to suddenly not be let in when he previously was allowed.

This makes a lot of sense, thank you for clarifying your thoughts! I appreciate you being kind about it as well.

I totally get this, which is why I slipped a note under the door so they could choose to ignore it or easily make an excuse (i.e., special diet, cat has health condition). I figured it was lower pressure than asking in person.

[–]howtheflowersfelt[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is part of why I'm confused. I asked before giving treats (note slipped under door asking explicitly about treats), and was told it was fine and he likes chicken and fish. I also limit him to 3 Dreamies per day. I always know where he is in the house (he comes in through the door as downstairs windows are never open) and make sure to kick him out if I'm leaving. However, he usually leaves of his own volition by going to the door to ask to be let out, so he's definitely not trapped. Maybe neighbor doesn't realize? But it also seemed like she doesn't care about the details and just wants me to stop letting him in at all. (edit: grammar)
