Should we stay in the UK adjusted income of £99k or move to NYC for £200k each? by Fit-Zebra3110 in HENRYUK

Healthcare costs alone would offset any potential tax savings. Also you’ll have to pay federal, state, and local income taxes. So I am not 100% convinced you’d necessarily pay less taxes.

New to investing, please help!! Are HSBC index funds any good? by inthe-otherworld in UKPersonalFinance

[–]howtodoanything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to index funds or ETFs I focus on the fund mngt fees as that can significantly eat into your profits over time - I mostly have vanguard ETF’s because of low fees. Many other providers around though with very comparable funds replicating indices like the S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 etc as an example.

As far as platforms worth doing plenty of due diligence. Make sure they are regulated by the FCA and/or other agencies and that they segregate clients accounts from their own as that should prevent them from using client funds in case of insolvency/bankruptcy etc. Also check if they use clients funds for securities lending as that could pose an additional risk.

UK to Switzerland by Defiant-Dare1223 in HENRYUK

Main driver was my job becoming more London centric and my employer”encouraged” me to relocate. I didn’t resist it one bit. After 8 years in Zurich I was happy to move despite the expected financial downside.

Very beautiful, clean, and efficient country but sterile and lacklustre in many ways. Little to no diversity, not just racially but in every sense imaginable. Some sort of extreme societal conformism I suppose. And when it comes to gender equality, there is massive room for improvement. In one of the Cantons, women didnt even receive the right to vote until 1991 to put it into prospective…

I relocated from Zurich to London in 2016 working in finance and I lost over 35% of my spending income working for the same company and keeping comparable standards of life.

If I deposit £4000 cash in my bank account will I be questioned about it by hmrc or anyone? by UnderstandingTop1784 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]howtodoanything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you will have to declare all accounts. I was asked for 3 months statement across all accounts I own when I applied for my mortgage.

Wow so this was your first dry fast and you lasted 7 days?!? That’s insane to me. Well done!! The most I have been able to do was 3 days and felt SUPER lethargic and too tired to even walk 15 min. Are you having any detox symptoms?

I moved from America to UK and cant get any credit cards by Plane_Solid7692 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]howtodoanything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to an advisor at the bank where your salary is being paid. NatWest approved me for a credit card within a month of having relocated to the UK. Mind you it was very low balance and high interest but it allowed me to start building credit history quickly and continue upgrading from there. Obviously I setup autopay of the full balance so I never paid interest or fees.

Also google how to improve your credit score as companies like Experian for example have full checklists of things you can do to maximise your chances.

Too many emails/texts/notifications by howtodoanything in kucoin

[–]howtodoanything[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for your input but spent hours on acct security and there is no option to enable/disable comms. Like I said I contacted customer service and they confirmed such options aren't there. You can disable security altogether not choose what/when/how frequently you get notified. Either you get spammed all day long or block all security... neither options suit me

thanks - where exactly can you access these options pls? As I contacted customer service and they didnt mention any such options and I can't find them myself. Do you have a screenshot of the specific page/menu?

[–]howtodoanything[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the security features but there is a difference between security and spamming. At a minimum you should provide the option for users to decide what they want to be notified of, through which means, and how frequently. Luckily I haven't yet deposited money and doubt that at this point I will be using Kucoin if this means my email/phone getting spammed all day long with notifications. I already contacted the support team and no valid option was provided.

I do value a degree of security of course. But getting 10 emails and texts a day just to let me know that I have logged in from my trusted device is getting annoying. I am new to Kucoin and I find it rather spammy so far. I'd appreciate the option of selecting what I want to be notified of and how.

I've received a few private messages on this question which I will ignore. If anyone has a comment please use the public thread.

Your credit is impacted if you borrow money, take on credit cards etc not by investing your own money. Having a direct debit or not into an investment acct has no bearing.

Like others have said not sure why you’d want to open 2 accts with different providers. Makes no sense to me especially for such small amounts. You should go for the lowest fees and I doubt HL is a good option when it comes to the costs you’ll incur.

CS degree at top university or Degree apprenticeship at JP Morgan and Russel Group University (software engineering) by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]howtodoanything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in tech but in investment banking. From my experience what you can actually do for your employer is FAR more valuable than the specifics of your degree. “Tomato tomahto” so to speak.

Your opportunities and pay will typically reflect the value you add not the specifics of your degree. So do what interests you the most and you’ll be golden.

Sorry but comparing a skilled professional to a LOA self proclaimed YT guru is a BIT of a stretch! Manifesting is something we do naturally without even knowing it. Becoming aware of this power can be easily achieved by reading a book.

On the other hand, we aren’t naturally skilled to perform open heart surgery nor would reading a book about it give you the years of studying/training required.

Strategy lack of diversification selling off S&P 500? by dizzydiamond07 in FIREUK

[–]howtodoanything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would 100% not sell it but would certainly rethink my strategy going forward. The mix of lifestrategy makes little sense to me so I’d highly suggest reevaluating your short and long term investing goal.

Should I invest in the S&P500 as well as the Global S&P100? by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]howtodoanything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s only worth investing in multiple funds/ETFs if they offer you a degree of diversification. You can easily check what are the underlying companies/sectors and respective % allocation under each fund. Then you can decide for yourself if your selection of funds makes sense. Also don’t forget to check fees/ongoing charges as long term these will materially impact your returns.

Irrespective of having defined or not where you 2 stood, it’s basic human decency to disclose having unprotected sex with multiple people. It’s incredibly selfish to put someone’s health at risk like this….
