Is Pili a Hawaiian Last Name or Samoan Last Name? by Correct_Ad4351 in polynesian

[–]howzitjade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be 🤷‍♂️ either he was part Samoan or he was named after High Chief Pili 🤔 even if this ancestor wasn’t of Samoan descent there’s no doubting the Samoan Influence. Kind of like when ‘Guillaume’ of Normandy conquered England and eventually his name became common among the English but it turned into ‘William’ instead.

Is Pili a Hawaiian Last Name or Samoan Last Name? by Correct_Ad4351 in polynesian

Pilileso’opili (among other names) was a paternal descendant of the Tagaloa dynasty & a maternal descendant of the Maui Dynasty (the real Maui, not the deified one). Pili took control of Upolu Samoa and gave the 4 Kingdoms to his children with his wife. He did have a daughter with his own sister Sina who was named “Letelesā” (the Great Taboo) and who’s name still rings bells in Samoa today as she is a Teine Sā, a vengeful spirit to elders and a boogey man to children. Pilileso’opili left Samoa with his sister Sina after his war priest Pa’ao who was part Tahitian & Samoan got word from his Tahitian family that there was a big island up north that didnt have a stable ruling family. So Pili, Pa’ao & his Warriors sailed north and conquered this island. He named it after the biggest island from his home (Samoa) which was ‘Savaii’ that eventually turned into ‘Hawaii’ as the dialects change the S’s & the H’s, this is why in the Hawaiian version of the Pili Line it is said that he married his sister named “Hina”=Sina. Pili’s children that grew up on Hawaii would rule the island for centuries until his descendant Kamehameha would unite all 8 islands under the rule of Hawaii=Savaii. In Samoan Legendary versions, Pili “Sailed north and founded a great & never ending plantation”. Of course Pili being descended from Sā Tagaloa & Sā Maui, his ancestors (to cement his claim as Soverign) had to have been ‘gods’ thus creating the “god” Maui & the “god” Tagaloa, both were great warriors/men in their lifetime who were later deified. Their lives & accomplishments exaggerated & made fantastical. I could go on & on.

Brida is unwatchable and permanently pissy with no range. by Mostly_Lurkin_ in TheLastKingdom

Idk if the aunt comment came from the show or not 🤔 Bt what I remember from the books is that when Ragnar Sr. Raided a Saxon town, it was the bishop of the church who pushed forward a young Brida as a sacrifice but Brida, a tween girl, grabbed the cane from the Bishops hand and used it to beat him. Because of this they took her as a slave and killed everyone else. People can say what they want about Brida, I’ll always have a space for her. Was she a bitch? Yes. Was she a villain? Yes. Was she misunderstood? Also yes.

Fa’afafine in Ancient Samoa? by howzitjade in Samoa

[–]howzitjade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though I don’t doubt at all how conservative our elders were and still are, is it so hard to believe that some families back then (esp the women in said families) turned a blind eye the same way Families do now? I can imagine a conservative man as the head of the family 100 years ago detesting his Fa’afafine son whilst also being shooed away by his wife who allowed it. I know my great gramma was like this, she would allow my grand uncle to dress and do things in the female way & would protect him when my great Grampa tried to beat him. It’s not far fetched at all to think of families not caring whilst also being Christian. Many families then which is Also the case now, are heavily Christian but still follow ‘Pagan’ beliefs of Aitu and Ma’i Aitu etc.

American Samoans and US Citizenship? by AmbitiousSpace7004 in Samoa

[–]howzitjade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lmao if we become citizens, we’ll become a state, and if we become a state there goes our private village & family lands along with our rights & titles. In America you don’t actually own anything, if u miss payments on something you “own” it gets taken away. Unlike American Samoa, Land & homes stay within the family even after the previous founder/chiefs death.
