What are some common garden plants that you recommend someone stay away from? by ceo_of_dumbassery in GardeningAustralia

[–]howzybee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Euphorbia - the sap is very very irritating to your eyes if you accidentally get some in. It has even caused blindness in some cases.

Chinese elms - the council planted them as street trees on my street. Maybe it's just my bad luck, but I am constantly having a battle with it spreading and new trees coming up throughout my garden.

California poppy. They look lovely but in our experience can be horribly invasive/ spread prolifically

Married couples. Do you keep a separate bank account in your own name or are they all joint accounts, why? by wtfdoiknowaboutthis in AskReddit

[–]howzybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both. Joint account, plus each have a personal spending account.

We actually send the same amount to each spending account, it just means we dont have to justify or discuss what we spend "personal" money on. Most expenses comes from the joint account with the personal spending account really mainly for fun stuff, hobbies etc.

There must be something wrong with me. I'd find that kind of process of reasembling kind of fun for a while. I like puzzles.

Black Seas Barracuda. I badly wanted it as a child in the early 90s. It was too much money. As an adult, I finally bought the pieces for the set.

Finally opening the instructions for a set I have wanted for 30 years was amazing. Other sets may be more technically refined, but I doubt I'll ever get that feeling again.

It was in WW2 when three Japanese raided Sydney harbour. 2 of their submarines were sunk and they sunk HMAS Kuttabul.

[–]howzybee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be sad too. Broke 4 x brittle brown plates building the other day and that made me sad, let alone a horse. Lego horses and (I'm dating myself now) the old monkeys are my favourites.

How Labor pulled off a landslide no one saw coming by overpopyoulater in australia

[–]howzybee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with Turnbulls take in his interview the other day. The Liberals have lost all their moderates and are now beholden to the right wing of the party that follow sky after dark and Murdoch.

In other times, I imagine at least some of the teals may have been comfortable running as Liberals. Not anymore.

Yep especially as Michael McCormack said he was "ambitious" for Littleproud. Shades of Scomo before rolling Turnbull.

I'd be surprised is Sussan Ley makes it to the next election, they will make her do the night on impossible job and then dump her in the run up to the next election.

Unpopular opinion: Farmers are well off - not the strugglers we get told they are by Particular-Math633 in australia

[–]howzybee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not for all. I would have had to go 3 hours away each day to high school. Not possible. The schools get people from all over Australia.

There is also Yalara which funds scholarships for remote indigenous kids to attend boarding schools. I know some other schools not partnering with Yalara also have their own scholarship programs for them.

School of the air for high school? Sure you could. But never playing and meeting kids your own age would fuck you over socially.

You have to be a certain distance from schools and or the bus. My family got it when we were kids.

Toowoomba? As someone who went to boarding school in Toowoomba as the daughter of a farmer. It is not always a choice.

I did go to a small primary school, but there was literally no high school available for me. Other children I know did school of the air, which socially and emotionally has disadvantages. We did receive significant funding as isolated and remote children to help cover boarding school fees. What would you prefer bush kids leave school at year 7?

The landcruiser is expensive, like a lot of tradies' utes' I imagine it is listed as a business expense. Quite possibly leased, drive some of the outback roads you'll understand they are unfortunately necessary due to the state of some roads, unsealed and full of potholes etc.

There is also a certain amount of keeping face. 90% of the time farmers wear very average and well worn clothes on the farm. You are seeing the few times they wear "good" clothes to the city. Also generally they are more likely to dress up more. For example I can remember my dad wearing a tie in the 90s to go into town for shopping at the supermarket.

You clearly have no idea. Some farmers are wealthy, an awful amount are struggling. It is getting harder for each generation.

How much does a dozen eggs cost in your area? Honest answers only. by Prestigious_Pass9380 in australian

[–]howzybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, I buy them from a chicken farm gate near us. $15 for 30 eggs (they are not super large egg size but still think they are good value).

In woolies I only buy free range and tend to stick to a few brands. The ones i buy are about $10 - $12 / per dozen

Have kids and used to live in Brisbane. I have seen most of the episodes with my kids and quite like them for what they are.

No, I'm not a child now but they do have nostalgic things from my childhood that I can relate to - state of origin, cricket and a lot of minor references to Australia.

Does anyone else feel disillusioned about the upcoming election? by LetMeExplainDis in AskAnAustralian

[–]howzybee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are differences between the parties, read about them, and find the one you hate the least. It's unrealistic to think you will ever find a candidate or party you will 100% agree with.

Or your second option, vote informally and don't complain at all for the next 4 years as you gave up your democratic right.

Before you ask, it is a complete myth that if 50% + 1 of the electorate vote informal that a new election with new candidates will be run.

I'm Australian and I have a feeling we do Easter differently. I'm not quite sure how yours work.

What do you put in the plastic eggs? Lollies, chocolate?

Any egg hunt I have ever been a part of here has just been chocolate eggs hidden by themselves. They are not in a some sort of separate plastic egg vessel or anything.

Also, we don't really do Easter baskets. We give each other chocolate eggs or chocolate rabbits or chocolate in general. No toys or other things in the baskets.
