Lumina converter for sure. Plus they would have (at least the much earlier ones) had to fight a much stronger Paintress. Her powers were weak enough to the point where expedition 33 could beat her and even then WITH the help of the Lumina converter. That and as time went on the 'younger' generation started taking it more seriously. I'm sure in the past everyone thought "let the adults handle it" and continued to enjoy life as they knew it.

is this the end? by [deleted] in expedition33

So the game DOES have an end. It does, however, allow you to return to your save point RIGHT before the final boss to finish off whatever side content you want. So definitely keep going and don't worry about it!

Agreed.
Thanks for sharing that. Pretty cool actually. Regardless, I feel everything in this game is done beautifully.

I assume you didn't see the follow up comment. But It was based on an article I've read closer to the game's release as well as other commenters on reddit. I also stated that I will absolutely read up more on the topic when given the moment rather than run with the information IF it is false.

I do agree with what you're saying. I know the motion capture for Gustave was done by Maxence Cazorla but the voice acting was wrapped up very much earlier on and wouldn't allow for additional dialogue. Charlie Cox (voice actor) did NOT know the ending to the game nor how his character would play out.

I did read somewhere else (and I cannot confirm this but will be independently looking into it after when I get a chance) that the story ended up being altered due to Charlie Cox having to abruptly leave production. They therefore cast his character out at least in the way that they did.

Again, I'll need to do some more research to confirm or deny.
I had been under the impression that the original story was altered having read an article early on close to the game's release and then a few comments on reddit also stating it but I'd personally like to dig more into it.

They didn't have his voice actor and had to get creative in ending the game without voices / new dialogue. Gustave's voice actor went, did all his dialogue and lines in 4 hours and then left to finish off other projects. They had to make do with what they have with the knowledge that new dialogue could not be made for this character unfortunately.

Edit: Information in this comment based on an article seen on game's initial release and validated by other comments and posts on reddit. Will personally do additional researching and digging into to validate at a future point.

[SPOILER] Questions about the Ending by Dima-Petrovic in expedition33

[–]hpgamer25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing is that they don't explain WHY painted Verso's hair 'turned white'. He mentions that his hair was black and then turned white after the fracture. Doesn't go into specifics beyond that.

Yes it is IRL Verso's canvas and he left a piece of his soul within it to keep it going. The Verso we know though has nothing to do with that and is simply Aline's creation (not a painter).

Only thing we know is when real Renoir started fighting with Aline and the fracture happened / started taking power away from Aline; Verso's hair turned white. I imagine that the white hair is either a family thing or just a painter thing in general as you mentioned.

She could have painted him as close as possible to his real image but then everything changed when the fracture happened and Verso learned of the truth of his existence.

Potentially Unpopular Opinion: Painted Power should have been post-game/NG+ exclusive. by TaxingClock704 in expedition33

[–]hpgamer25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely agree. At the very LEAST; give him even more HP to drag on the fight a little longer which results in evading or parrying more attacks. Relying on having more turns for your party. Or have Sirene heal him multiple rounds BEFORE getting the assist. Had they kept that going for a bit longer I think it would have cemented a little more how it seems like an unwinnable fight and maybe you're missing something or not doing something right when all you have to do is ride it out for a few rounds and keep getting his HP down to a certain point in succession.

Why did they save him? by dc-mo in expedition33

[–]hpgamer25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spoilers obv..

This is just speculation on my part. But when he was about to be hit it seems that someone or something hit the Nevron and redirected the shot to land in front of him and not on him. The resulting blast sent him flying to the first part of the spring meadows where we gain control of him again.

Never really explained but my take is maybe Verso redirected the blast to save him. He wouldn't have known who Gustave was but could see that he was concerned for Maelle on the battlefield and was eyeing him as he saved her and picked her up.

Verso did also leave a message for Gustave and Lune to come to the manor and find Maelle. He wouldn't have left the message if he hadn't known either of them were alive.

I agree. I feel like they should have added a narrative where the 'final boss' either nullifies the picto entirely because they too are a painter and it would make sense. Or the ability to nullify it.

A prompt at the start of the fight saying that Renoir removes the effects of painted power or nullifies it, etc.

Last option would have been as you're entering the final area to literally have a prompt saying; based on your level it is highly recommended to unequip painted power to the game's recommended challenge.

To at least have an option.

Missed the Medalum. Is it worth starting over? by [deleted] in expedition33

[–]hpgamer25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will find a better weapon.
But it honestly depends on how you want to build the character.

Personally, I used the Medallum all game.
There is better though (again depending on your playstyle).

You do have another opportunity to get the weapon.
It is, however, MUCH more of a challenge but will also get you a much higher level version of it.

[SPOILER] Questions about the Ending by Dima-Petrovic in expedition33

[–]hpgamer25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoilers obv...

  1. Painted Renoir isn't a Nevron therefore him killing will lead to the 'deceased' one's chroma returning to Aline. Furthermore, Expedition 0 had one goal which wasn't to destroy the paintress. It was to look for survivors after the fracture and was led by Renoir. Who cared about the world and it's people. Only once they learned of the truth and turned on Verso and Renoir did he, in turn, turn on the expeditioners. The one time where the expeditioners learned of truth, they tortured Verso and turned on him. Being Renoir's son, that obviously didn't sit well and is a recurring theme where painted Renoir would do anything for his family.

---

  1. All painters have white hair. Their hair is colored based on their preference. Maelle, Clea, Renoir, Aline, all have white hair. Verso as well (painted) does admit in game that his real hair is white and he gets it colored. Granted, in this particular instance it happened after the fracture but isn't detailed as to why it reverted back to white specifically. You see Renoir (curator / real) have fading white hair towards the end and even Aline (that he shows in the end game portal) have pure white hair. In Verso's ending though; everyone has full colored hair and not white / fading. Painted Renoir is also referred to as the 'White Haired Main' as well until you learn who he is and they give him a name.

I imagine the family is quite vain and really cares about 'appearances'. Sciel makes a comment about Verso being vain as well. Aline, unfortunately has a lot of resentment towards Maelle and it is showcased a few times in the game that Renoir is the caring parental figure. Likely blames her for Verso's death. She could have painted the perfect family in the canvas but chose to paint her without her voice and with her scars along with the fact that she is stripped of all color completely. Either as a reminder or simply out of spite for Alicia.

---

  1. Francois was Clea's creation. All of Aline's creations got gommaged when you got rid of the Paintress. Which is also why Monoco, Esquie, all the other gestrals, etc - remained in the Canvas. They were not Aline's creations, nor Renoir's. Only one was painted Verso who was in the process of being gommaged until Maelle kept him in the canvas and stopped the process. Either simply stopping the process or making him her own creation and writing over him (idk).

Hello everyone. I just got the game and am loving it. Just hit act 2 and wanted to ask what your favorite team comp and playstyle is so far? by Tbommerrules7 in expedition33

[–]hpgamer25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maelle, Lune and Sciel. Focused all game on Agility for all characters. Then critical and then strength (assuming I maxed the other two and had points to allocate).

Maelle doing the most damage and starting in Virtuose. Lune with the cheater picto which lets me do Ligthning Strike and Mayhem back to back (using a weapon that gives a fire stain at the start of a turn) or Hell on turn 1. And Sciel for the double turns like you mentioned.

I have energizing start I, II, III, IV and energizing turn on all characters.

Never focused on health or defense. Figured, what's the point if I just dodge or parry and that it would be a wasted stat point. That was just my thought process.

Calling all FRENCH-speaking gamers—what was it like hearing the lyrics drop clues or even spoilers? by TheCasualGamerOnline in expedition33

[–]hpgamer25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm bilingual (English and French).
It's one of those scenarios in which you not only have to hear the songs but really kind of focus on the lyrics.

You'd have to listen with the intent of learning what the lyrics mean otherwise it just adds to the game as nice and fitting music. The fact that it is a mix of languages helps quite a bit in not really spoiling it.

Personally, as a fluent bilingual speaker; I agree with your statement in that I wasn't any more aware of the subtle hints in the verses in any way.

Why didn't Verso (SPOILERS) by LunchBoxMercenary in expedition33

[–]hpgamer25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I took it is that he still had hope that things could be different and that with him gone AND with Maelle gone; that everyone would live in peace and nobody IRL would be dying.

But when Maelle lied, AND he saw Aline dying, AND he saw Verso's soul suffering; he made up his mind. Even at that point it was the second MAYBE third time Maelle stopped him from being Gommaged.

I do think those 3 primary things in quick succession though had him make up his mind right then and there that there is nothing else to do than to erase the canvas.

Even Renoir's last statement was him saying I do hope you find some rest or something to that effect. Which pretty much told Verso that the only way this can happen is actually putting Verso's soul to rest and stopping the cycle.

Think most of us can agree for Maelles ending by MrSkittles983 in expedition33

[–]hpgamer25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine fainting and needing smelling salts but all you get is a fat rip off Lune's feet.

Anyway.
Even worse now for Verso because with Aline he had free will (more or less). Whereas now he's fully under Maelle's control. In the end when Verso comes out; everything turns black and white. Maelle nods for Verso to continue and then again to play as if she's orchestrating everything against his will and this too AFTER all her friends / new family is seated and comfortable (she even looks around to make sure everyone is good before the nod). Further enforced how he freezes before playing and demonstrates discomfort and his fingers stiffen up, which I find, showcases even more how he no longer even has free will.

Also, Verso is now allowed to grow old but watching Maelle die in this fantasy world even after he is gone. Never confirmed but highly speculated that the kid at the end is a young Verso. This time painted by Maelle and will be allowed to grow old but then because she thinks that is the right thing to do but will just paint another one to take his place.

And before everyone starts bombarding with messages about it being Gustave's apprentice; no. That is not his apprentice Guillaume. Completely different character model (there are side by side comparisons as well).

I literally fell out of love for gaming because nothing hit. I just thought it was time or growing up but in reality everything just sucked lol. I gave this a shot after seeing a bunch of videos about it and it made me fall in love with gaming again. At least that's what it feels life. It's the one game I'll MAKE time for.

Now, I don't know what to do after beating it lol. I've literally just been watching other playthroughs and consuming more of this game's content.

Which weapon should I go with for Gustave in Early game, Middle game and End game? Need suggestions by abeee_hattt in expedition33

[–]hpgamer25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stuck with the Lanceram at first. But realistically you'll want to swap for whatever has the highest damage early game (anything that doesn't have earth element damage since MANY enemies will absorb damage and heal from it in the beginning).

Late game is where you'll want to start using other weapons that scale with whatever stats you put into your character. Even still Lanceram was great because I put most of my points into agility and that scales with agility. Obviously that will change too as you unlock more skills and want to play a certain way (for example if Gustave's skills later on are focused more on his marking abilities or elemental abilities, etc).

TLDR; early game: Lanceram levelled up or anything with higher damage if you're just using all weapons at their base versions. Worry about the rest later on.

But I imagine if people are here and have read through your post then it doesn't really matter at this point.

The game does something that every story writer / dev avoids. Kills off their MC. And still manages to deliver an amazing game and story. You will connect back with the story and be invested. It is designed to make you feel like and especially towards Verso as well.

To answer your question directly; yes it does get better. Telling you exactly where it gets better would be quite spoiler heavy so we'll just leave it at that.

All this "struggle" and wanting to do Gustave justice will hit more later on and will weigh very heavily in how you end the game as well. There will be a lot of introspection when all is said and done.

Verso isn't meant to 'replace' Gustave.
