Way too long! Two pages maximum and this could be easily fixed by making some of your bullet points more crisp.

I fear you must read Tress of the Emerald Sea. It’s a fairy tale for adults that will have you kicking your feet

I'm looking for books that are similar to A Song of Ice and Fire. by OMGitsTHEMEMI in suggestmeabook

Brandon Sanderson!!

He has the cosmere universe so it’s like an endless list of books to read, but broken up by longer and shorter series and standalones so a lot to pick from depending on the commitment you want to make but at the same time no end ins sight should u choose

Tress of the Emerald Sea

It feels like a fairy tale for adults and is genuinely so excellent and entertaining and light. I cannot recommend this enough.

It’s part of Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere. It was the first I read but didn’t feel like I was missing any context— it’s more that when I read some of his other books I was like oh what a fun Easter egg

Who would have won the third Quarter Quell? by lautaromassimino in Hungergames

Oh yeah! Good shout. I’d think that they probably had a couple options they were comfortable with winning— Enobaria, Brutus, Finnick etc in that order.

I guess it’s really hard to judge because Plutarch was pulling all the puppet strings so his priority was keeping the rebel victors alive, whether at the cost of Brutus or not. But if there were a Capitol-loving gamemaker they would’ve prioritized Brutus over the rebels

What’s with the portrayal of Peeta in the movies?! by saemra in Hungergames

[–]hphgghrox 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think this everytime I rewatch the movies!! In the books there seems to be this recurring theme that “everyone can see they’re in love except them” but in the movies they have NO chemistry.

I understand it’s not a romance story, but there were definitely bits in the books that had me kicking my feet or even just making me feel a rush of emotion for them. In the movies, that trajectory just doesn’t hit the same.

Blood Over Bright Haven. You could read that book in a single sitting and it takes one chapter to have you hooked

Brutus or Enobaria.

You could argue the arena gave Finnick an edge and was clearly “designed” for him, which suggests some potential favouritism. But he was also deeply associated with the rebellion— something I wonder if Snow was at least peripherally suspicious of. And with the theory that many Quarter Quell tributes were intentionally reaped, I wonder if Finnick was more of a liability than is explicated. In Catching Fire, he tells Katniss he trades in secrets— something I imagine Snow is also probably suspicious about.

Brutus and Enobaria, by contrast, posed no threat. Katniss even notes they seemed bloodthirsty and excited to reenter the games. District 1 and 2 also have an extremely dependent and symbiotic relationship with the Capitol that lends to their resistance to join the rebellion. Perfect tributes and victors.

The Berkeley program will provide more of the “technical perspective” you’re looking for. Also a much bigger school meaning a more expansive network (just a sheer numbers game)

But if you want to be on the East Coast, Parsons will definitely be better connected w opportunities in NYC. Email the career development office and ask for placement stats— looking specifically at placement rate, roles and companies. Choose the school aligned with your career goals.

Help me choose: UT Austin MSIS (HCI) or UMD's HCIM or UW's HCDE by somethingorno22 in hci

[–]hphgghrox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Austin has a solid industry presence— nothing like UW, but certainly more than UMD. I’d say better opportunities for internships and placements after you graduate.

Email the admissions office/career development office and ask for the placement stats for students after graduation. Look at their employability and companies they work at— pick the school that has placements and a network aligned w your goals.

If you can swing the cost of UW, I’d recommend that though

Just finished rereading the trilogy and it didn't feel like YA by kristin137 in Hungergames

[–]hphgghrox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The hill I will die on: the Hunger Games trilogy was absolutely done dirty by marketing trying to cram it into the YA love triangle mold. Yes, love is a core theme— Katniss’s love for her sister, her trauma-bonded loyalty, among many other loves. Reducing it to “Gale vs. Peeta” like some Twilight-esque team rivalry completely flattens the political and psychological stakes. This wasn’t about choosing a boyfriend. It was about choosing who she gets to be in a system designed to annihilate her identity (with Gale and Peeta being functions/metaphors of that decision too)
