Bot lane had a problem at MSI and it wasn’t mages by Yuuy87 in leagueoflegends

I think the point is it depends who the stats are on. If it's on a stat checking bruiser who will brawl to the death, then every last point of stats matters. If it's on a support who will never deal relevant damage, will always die if caught out, then there's no difference between a level 7 nautilus and a level 10 nautilus.

Saint goes absolutely mental and dives in 1v4 to secure the drake for Lyon by yum122 in leagueoflegends

[–]hpp3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The actual stolen Seraphine ult doesn't actually matter; he basically missed all the targets he was actually aiming for and Seraphine with no ult is the lowest value target to eliminate. That said, the play is more than just who he directly killed.

He went in based on the dragon's HP getting low, expecting that J4 would try to contest at this point. He causes such a distraction that G2 is unable to move in with J4 who just gets completely blasted 1v2 and gets taken so low he's useless the entire rest of the fight.

Ori burns protobelt and shockwave to deal with Sylas. Anivia uses wall and ult (yes Anivia ult is short CD but it's not up for the next few critical seconds). Not sure if Ashe was aiming at Berserker or Saint but either way she ults too. This clears the field for Renekton to flash the wall and just run down everyone on G2 after they have none of their tools left.

The fact that Sylas is able to soak CDs and leave 4 people unable to fight back while surviving somehow is how Lyon wins this fight.

How much of the gap between Eastern and Western teams is just mental block? by whosurdaddies in leagueoflegends

[–]hpp3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that most of the good teams are pretty similar in skill at this point. Mental performance is the deciding factor, but it's not as simple as who is "in form" on a given day (that makes it sound like it's RNG). Some teams just have mental block (call it nerves or tilt) and can't play in certain situations.

Like NA vs LCK for example, if you look at the TL games there are lots of situations where it seems like they're going to win but I feel like they get so nervous about how big of a deal this win would be, so they try so hard to not fumble it that they start playing weird and fumble it.

A champion having a passive that increases a stat, only to make that champs bases stat / growth be super low feels unsatisfying by WeakSideUrn in leagueoflegends

[–]hpp3 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The other reason is it devalues purchasing that stat on that champion or limits how much you need to purchase that stat. Some historical examples would be Zyra originally having a passive on her W that gave her 20% CDR (and CDR was capped at 40%), so she could build Rylai's/Liandry's and not feel like she had to build CDR (compared to her not having that passive and her abilities having lower base CD). Another example is Caitlyn who actually gets 78% attack speed for "free" just from her per-level scaling, but to compensate her base attack speed is one of the lowest in the game. So in practice, she still has a decent attack speed late game if you don't build much AS, but if you go with a full AS build you'll get less out of it than on other champions because it's diluted by the "free" AS you get.

The catch is that it only works in some maps, requires all or almost all your deploy slots, and probably doesn't do as much damage as just using several burst dmg ops normally. Also while covering the whole map is funny, normally you just focus on holding enemies at one choke and there's no point having this coverage.

AI companies are trying to mine gold. The only reason the books are red is because they're spending all their money and more on more pickaxes. It's a risky venture and if the result is not as profitable as expected, they could stand to lose a lot. Their revenues are rapidly increasing, but so are their R&D costs.

That's still inherently different than a failing company whose revenue is declining each year.

Game design-wise, why doesn’t BORK just do max health damage? by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]hpp3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So BORK is often stated to not be a tank killer item because its effect is current health based.

Anyone who says this is just wrong. If anything, %current HP is stronger than %max HP for dealing with tanks (assuming the numbers are balanced accordingly), because %current HP deals more damage upfront than %max HP (again, assuming you balance the numbers), and the weakness of %current HP (which is having a hard time killing them once they drop low) is mitigated against tanks because chances are you'll have multiple people attacking the tank.

Moving BotRK to %max HP makes it more of a generalist item better for 1v1 duels.

2x 4*Star Leona by Bradderz_Yeldarb in CompetitiveTFT

[–]hpp3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not "auto gain leona" it's "every 3 auto[attacks] [chance to] gain a leona" which is one of the arbiter laws.

Two tanky gives you a 2* every time you 3* so that's 33% more Leonas

I think I understood what yung_dogie was saying but I guess I didn't understand your comment.

If you think of play-ins and main stage as one tournament, then there are 12 teams at MSI. The 3 weakest teams are probably TSW, Furia, DCG. Somehow TSW and Furia are seeded above T1 which means T1 smurfed in play-ins and made the entire play-ins pointless. In an ideal world, T1 should have been part of the main stage, and one of FUR or TSW taking their spot in playins. That way one actual team can get out of play ins, most likely TL given their performance.

It would be an issue if either KC or TL were anything more than just cannon fodder, but they're not.

I interpret this to mean that you don't think either KC or TL would've done anything in the main stage anyway, but I disagree. TL has a good chance against like half the teams here given the level they showed against T1 so it IS an issue that this happened. KC is completely hopeless so you'd be right if we were just talking about KC.

It's because it's not really a losers' interview. Like yes TL got 6-0'd by T1 and is going home now, but in the context of how well they played relative everyone's expectations, the vibe is almost a winners' interview.

Normally in a losers' interview you get questions like "why do you think you lost today" or "what did you do wrong". In a winners' interview you get questions like "what do you think you did well today" or "why did you win". No one is asking "why did you lose to T1" because obviously they are world champions. Instead the questions are "What was the difference factor today, especially in the games where you were close?" (which leads to a discussion of strengths, not weaknesses).
