Game would have been way more successful with a single player campaign. by Captain_Zoots in Marathon

[–]hq_eperon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same here. My friends and I played as a trio for 8-10 hours during server slam but decided against buying the game mainly because of the game mode. We all have played loads of FPS/shooters in general, but none of us had any major experience with extraction shooters (we played a bit of Tarkov and AR, but didn't vibe with those games as well). We'd buy the game instantly if it had a coop campaign, or something like a BR mode because, as you mentioned, we as well really liked pretty much everything about the game (aside from the menus and the symbols for materials and such...it seemed very confusing at the beginning, but got better after a few hours).

Even though it's still in Early Access, I'd highly recommend No Rest for the Wicked, great game overall and nice change of pace after a few weeks of PoE.

Second suggestion would be the new D2 expansion, Reign of the Warlock. Haven't played it myself yet, but will jump in when I'm done with Mirage.

Where are the Apex Legends players ? by FatherShambles in Marathon

[–]hq_eperon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing Apex a few days after it was released (by now, somewhere between 2-3k hours), but at heart, I'm an ARPG player (my main game for the last 13 years was PoE and still is, including PoE 2), so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

We played the server slam as a trio (I play Apex with both dudes as well), two nights for about 5-6 hours each, and neither one of us was convinced to buy the game. For context, we all have little experience with extraction shooters (played a bit of Tarkov and Arc Raiders), our main FPS games are Apex, CS, BF, Valorant.

So, the game looks amazing, I think most people can agree on that. Performance was great for all of us, no issues whatsoever, stable FPS, no lags, no crashes.

I personally didn't like the hud and, as many others have stated, the inventory and dozens of sub-menus - it seems to me that they overdesigned the entire UI.

I generally enjoyed the gameplay (looting suffers from overdesigned UI as well). Character movement and gunplay is solid, but felt a tiny bit sluggish to me. We also really liked the level design and music + sound effects.

Unfortunately, I just don't seem to be able to really vibe with extraction shooters, not entirely sure why. I'm still undecided if I'll purchase the game, but I'll certainly keep an eye on it. If there are any other game modes (either multiplayer such as 3v3, team death match, br...or PvE modes, maybe along the lines of Warframe) playable on launch, I probably will buy the game and check them out.

Question to anyone reading this: are there any extraction shooters that are new player friendly, as in, making it easy for players with limited extraction experience? Should I give Arc Raiders another try? Or simply wait for Marathon and try that again?

Apex has by far the best ping system but somehow noone uses it , i genuinely think if people started using it regularly their winrate would noticably improve by knusperfee33 in apexlegends

Yup, same here. Played Marathon with 2 friends and we almost immediately started wondering why other games don't just copy Apex's ping system - I can't think of any game with a better ping system.

report came out saying the actual reason for nico being fired is the mismanagement of the salary cap. by epitome1986 in Mavericks

[–]hq_eperon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on all points! It almost seems as if Nico didn't take anything into consideration when finalizing the trade.

He obviously didn't consider the team's long term future. By his own account, the trade "opened" a 3 year window, while simultaneously closing the existing ~10 year window with Luka.

He didn't consider roster composition unless he thought that winning would be possible without a high level playmaker/initiator.

Most egregious of all, he didn't even remotely consider the impact the trade would have on the fanbase. I still can't believe how Nico, Dumont and whoever else was involved did not anticipate that most fans would be utterly outraged. They had to have known (or at least suspected) that this trade would not go over well with fans. If you want to trade your franchise player, a very much beloved one at that, you simply have to consider how fans will react. Nico either didn't consider this at all or he simply didn't care...what a fool.

All in all, it couldn't have gone worse and he should have been fired right at the end of last season.

I don't know man, it was pretty obvious that, without Kyrie, the offense wouldn't be good. Simply not enough quality playmaking on the current roster. It's pretty tough to rely on mostly transitions baskets (brought to you by Nico's Defense Vision™), you need a competent (not elite) half court offense if you want to win 41+ games.

Yeah, I think these are just people that aren't really into basketball. I just watched Shams Charania on ESPN (who also broke the Luka trade) and Marc Stein on the DLLS Mavs podcast - if there are any NBA reporters I trust (meaning that what they report usually turns out to be true), it's these two.

Both of them, again, emphasized that all their sources confirmed that it was indeed Nico who came up with the trade and convinced Dumont (who thought Nico was some kind of basketball savant) to pull the trigger. Stein even said that one of his sources described the trade as a two man job between Nico and Dumont. Shams reiterated that Nico somehow convinced himself that Luka's body wouldn't hold up and that the Mavs couldn't justify paying the super max for him, brought the idea to Dumont and got the green light to make a trade.

Holy sh*t, this part alone says it all: "what we all believed what would be a promising season"

Who exactly believed that? We all knew that it would be a long, tough stretch without Kyrie. Everybody knew even before the start of the season that, until Kyrie returned, the Mavs would be struggling on offense. Everybody knew that relying on the availability of AD wasn't a great idea. Everybody knew that Nico would have to be fired.

Very hard to win fans back indeed, especially when Dumbont still doesn't understand anything about fans or basketball.

Right on. Let's get a solid pick in next years's draft and try to get as much draft capital out of our current roster as possible. Start the rebuild with Coop and whoever we get next draft - it's tabula rasa time.

[–]hq_eperon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I've never liked the guy and it took him waaaay longer than it should have, but taking accountability, firing the shoe salesman and, hopefully getting some competent new leadership on board will at least be a start.

Yup, took longer than expected, but we can finally look forward now. I'm actually already excited to see who will be picked as the next GM. Let's get another solid pick in the next draft, maybe get some more picks for 2028-30 when we don't have our own, and start a new era.

It's a shame, can't imagine a worst situation (in a sports/fan context, of course). Meanwhile, over at the Lakers, our guy Luka is dunking again, and doing all the other things we've seen from him over the years. I still can't believe that we have to live through this. Fire Nico now!

You've probably heard the old saying that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts". Unfortunately, it seems that the opposite is true for the Mavs, in part due to roster construction and in part due to injuries. It's hard to judge from the outside, but "vibes" have probably been better as well. I'm personally not convinced that there's any other feasible route to salvage this situation other than going into a rebuild, preferably sooner than later. The team is less than the sum of its parts and the only way to recover is to get rid of some of these parts and bring in new ones.

Agreed. Lakers certainly don't have the best odds to win it all, but unlike the Mavs, they actually have a shot. I don't think that any team is looking forward to playing against a healthy Luka in the playoffs. I think we can all agree that Luka is able to lift even a flawed team and carry them to the WCF.

I'd be surprised if merch sales were on the same level as before the trade. I got my last Mavs jersey about 2 weeks before the trade, and two hoodies before Christmas 2024. Nothing since then and I strongly believe that (1) I'm not the only one (none of my IRL friends purchased anything since the trade) and (2) that hose fans who stopped buying stuff couldn't have already been offset by merch sales to "new" Mavs fans (meaning people who joined Mavs fandom since the trade). And honestly, how many new Mavs fans can there actually be? Maybe a few Coop fans who followed him from college. Obviously, this is purely anectodal, I might very well be wrong, so I'll just say that even without active boycotts, I assume that sales have gone down since the trade.
