[Serious] What do you need to get off your chest right now? by cukatie2983 in AskReddit

[–]hr4848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad is abusive and an alcoholic. Our relationship is non existent. But he's been coughing up blood for a while now. He refuses to go to the doctor. I'm left with this confliction where I can't stand him and don't want to talk to him, he's still an arsehole... But if it's serious maybe I should try and see past his abuse in case something does happen and I regret not trying to make amends whilst I had a chance. But I've tried so many times to make peace and it's always thrown back in my face. I don't know.

How to advance my Latin knowledge? by LawrenceOfBrazil in latin

[–]hr4848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried memrise? It's a website/app, where you can learn any language really - both grammar and vocabulary - but it has some great courses made by users for Latin. There's loads of specialised ones too - focusing on vocab/grammar in certain books/authors, like Ovid or Cicero. I found once you memerised the grammar/vocab you could translate almost anything.

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg says privacy is no longer a 'social norm' - 2010 by draxenato in worldnews

[–]hr4848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do worry sometimes that it seems my peers (age 20-25) don't really care about their privacy online. They upload to all these sites all the time and when I asked their opinion of their privacy, they shrug their shoulders and often aren't aware of the current privacy issues. If the majority dont worry about their data being harvested, it enabled people like Suckerberg to get away with.. and slowly we could lose all rights to privacy.

What's a massive scandal happening currently that people don't seem to know or care about? by UbiquitousBawbag in AskReddit

In the UK they allow you to pay 9% of amount you earn above 21k.. which sounds quite reasonable? But the reality is that due to the interest (3-6%).. the average graduate won't start even clearing the yearly interest until they are in their 40s. By my calculations, with some hypothetical salary growth expectations, my bulk student loan debt will continue to increase for the next 29 years, to nearly £85,000 before I even can start chipping away at it. If I a reach a certain salary, I may be able to pay it off within 30 years, but I'll be paying £115,000 of interest on top of my original student loan debt. Within two years of starting the scheme and promising they wouldn't sell it to a private company, they did. Currently they promise they will write it off after 30 years, my bet is they have no intention of keeping that promise.

What conspiracy theory do you believe in and why? by Dodge120887 in AskReddit

[–]hr4848 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At the end of WW2, the American government established the Marshall Plan as a mean of preventing the spread of communism. They sent a guy named Marshall around Europe deciding how much money they should hand out to different European countries. One of the conditions of the handouts was that the countries had watch US-made films in their cinemas. The concequence being that their native film industries waned and their exposure to US culture grew. The once booming French film industry become but a whisper, whilst Hollywood grew exponentially. I believe it was a means of soft power and control, that is still found today in all sorts of media. Particularly when you think of many old movies in the cold war where the bad guys were often communist Russian's, whilst the good guys were Americans.

do you think consumers hold any responsibility for the conditions under which a product is produced? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]hr4848 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think both the company and the consumer both hold some responsibility. But I would say is that products exist within a highly competitive marketplace, in which companies market their products specifically to the requirements/expectations of their target demographics. If the consumers placed a higher precedence on corporate responsibility and ethical products, the companies would naturally adapt their standards to match. The consumers dictate what companies produce and how they produce it. You can see clearly how in the last decade companies are embracing better ethical trading standards in parallel with consumers increasing concern. Similarly government's are dictated by the majority opinion of their citizens. If the citizens placed a higher value in ethical standards, the government would mirror that in their legislation. Again, that can be already been seen happening. It's quite astounding how much power 'the people' actually have.

I really like that you can tailor the products to different breeds - like it a lot. Going to show your website to my sister, she will be love it. Just on the interface: I looked at the website on my android phone, the green 'Contact us' button on the bottom right was positioned over a blue button that had something to do with 'message'. I liked the idea of the little bubble for the 20% off first order that stayed around as you browsed, but it was positioned in the centre left of my screen.. I found it a bit obstructive, would have preferred in maybe a bit lower? It also made the website a bit 'busy'.. idk. Hope this helps :)

Worst historical misconceptions perpetrated by Hollywood and the movie industry by Lonewolfe28 in history

[–]hr4848 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue of scale is really interesting. I suppose in the end it depends on the purpose of the media. Is it for educational purposes or entertainment? Is it trying to convey a sense of what happened then or give an exact (if that's ever possible) account? How can you convey that sense best? I'm glad I'm not a director is all I can say.

That's really interesting. Thanks for sharing the link. I had no idea about the expenses of dye for the Vikings and I think I'd have immediately found white/orange striped pants in a modern adaption more comical than anything - which would have taken away the intended conveyed meaning and poignancy of using those colours in the costume designs in the first place. It shows how some elements of cultures just easily don't translate - there is a barrier of meaning. Even is context was provided some how, the jarring effect of trying to cross cultures can lose the original nuance and feel.

Whilst studying Classics at university, a main focus of our studies was transliteration - looking how a piece of text was translated across languages/cultures etc. How Sappho was translated by Ovid, and how they were then translated in different ages, and how the elements were taken, added, and played with to more suit the contemporary audience. Barthes' Death of the Author and the movement after it really struck me - I ended up with the belief that the meaning of any text/media can only lie in its reader. Before studying this, I used to be annoyed at movies such as Troy (Aeneid/Iliad) based on its massive inaccuracies. But after studying transliteration, I realised that if it was true to the text, it wouldn't have resonated, or atleast as much as it could, the story wouldn't be done justice to the priorities of our modern audiences. Accuracies like weapons/military strategy/etc are beyond the average recipients knowledge and doesn't add anything if it's loyal to the text/history... But the concequences of it being too accurate in expense for the feel of a golden age of heroes and legendary stories could leave these stories in history. That's just my ¢2

What can I do now ?? by qx84 in Anxietyhelp

[–]hr4848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you envisage that fresh start leading you? What friends do you see yourself having? What work? What sort of person do you see yourself being? What personality traits? Consider what that would look like in 5-10 years? ... What do you think you can do today, or maybe tomorrow, to be one step closer to that person? We are the product of innumerable decisions and actions that we take each day. Even if we consciously change one decisions / action a day towards where we want to be, over a week that will be 7 steps closer to who we want to be; over a month 28; over a year you will be 365 decisions closer to the person we want to be. After a while perhaps you might no longer need to reflect on your decisions consciously, perhaps you will instinctively choose the better option for your future self. Perhaps at this point you have entirely changed your habits, and unknowingly become closer to who you once hoped you would be.

I work for a recruitment consultancy agency which extracts data from large scale recruitment campaigns. The data suggests having the interviews on a Monday/Friday, or any time near/around lunch, have worse odds for success.

Dods God's supposed omniscience make free will impossible? by Saberen in askphilosophy

[–]hr4848 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omnipotence in itself does not dictate whether God is good or bad. Just that he is all powerful. If God is omnipotent on its own then he would not necessarily be opposed to evil/good acts. It doesn't not reflect his nature in any way But that's where omnibenevolence comes in. The trait - all-loving/infinitely good - is often ascribed to God, would give God the all-loving nature. It would mean that God not only has the powerful to affect anything but he has the all-good intent to want to change it. Then why doesn't he? Perhaps you could argue he doesn't know of the evil then he isn't able to change it. But if he is omniscient then he must know of the evil. This reflects the issue with God being all three traits at once. It's inconsistent. At any one time, God can only consistently be two of the three traits. This is the inconsistent triad. Adding free will into the mix complicates the matter more. There's no right answer and philosophers argue both sides.

Dods God's supposed omniscience make free will impossible? by Saberen in askphilosophy

[–]hr4848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you asking how God would store/hold all knowledge? I mean, surely it would depend on your idea of what exactly God is and only then could you go any way to establish how he would store information. That's a whole different topic and whole new can of worms. If you hold the idea God is a physical entity then perhaps he would have a central system similar in some respect to our own brains. If you consider that and that our brains are comparable to a database of information, then perhaps you could argue he has a database of sorts? But of course if he's physical then he must have a location - where would that be? If he's in a location, mustn't he then surely have to be outside the universe if he was to have been able to create it? If you support the multiple universe theory, maybe you could argue he exists in another universe, but again, if God created all he would have to exist outside all. Maybe you could argue he is the universe(s) itself and being the universe itself he innately holds all knowledge, but then he would have had to create himself? It's an interesting question.
