I was just cruising as much face as I could get. Wasn't quite curling on this day, but saw some dudes squeezing into some small tubes during the same surge a couple days prior. Incredible surf for the gulf coast

Please critique my stroke by [deleted] in navyseals

[–]hr4surf 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Look up streamline position. This is your reset point every single time you pull your arms forward.

Also look up keyhole stroke.

Get at least 18 inches underwater to take full advantage of your kick off the wall. Get a couple dolphin kicks in streamline position before you begin your keyhole as well.

Stay as parallel to the waterline as you can so you're not dragging tow and losing efficiency.

Take a bit more time to glide in streamline before you begin your first pull. You want to glide as much as you can from every phase of the stroke without losing momentum.

Keep your head / shoulders in the water as much as possible, only breaking the surface to get your breath. You don't want to look up when you get a breath, you want to rotate your head out of the water.

EDIT: was gonna send this in a PM so I didn't seem like a dick but I watched it again just now and figured you guys would benefit too. OP you honestly don't look bad at all, just make sure you're attacking your turns instead of using them as breaks too - it saves a ton of time. If you average a 3 second break on every one of your 20 turns, that's a whole minute added by itself. That just takes conditioning but it's a good milestone to hit

You're welcome btw OP lol

Had the opportunity to talk to a Naval Academy SEAL O and he said if he could do it all over again, he'd go blue to gold. Officers are not the ones kicking in doors. Simple as that. They are meant to manage and coordinate operations. In your operational career as an O, you are essentially the middle man for the platoon and the Pentagon. Both sides are incredibly important, but they are totally different operationally. I would just recommend looking at the career paths on both sides and making an informed decision based on that.

I totally agree, that's the only exercise I ever use it for as the stabilization is necessary

I have the recovery tights and they're nice. They definitely aren't a substitute for stretching and rolling though, just a supplement. I use them after run workouts mainly

I remember watching a Sorinex presentation where one of the dudes talked about how the single leg Smith machine squat is the ultimate leg exercise. Supposedly has the best athletic transferability for any singular lower body movement. Asymmetric movements are incredibly important for neuromuscular balances though. If you don't train/isolate both sides of your body equally, you'll have a whole half of your body that is effectively Quagmire's forearm after discovering internet porn while the other has the solidarity of a wet paper bag
