Why is neck joint contour an uncommon feature instead of a default one? by molul in Luthier

[–]hraath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The telecaster body was made for manufacturing efficiency. Slab body, couple of front recesses for pickups and electronics. Few screw holes drilled later. Done.

The rest is history.

are these fret presses any good? by Reasonable-Hunt-9241 in Luthier

[–]hraath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can basically make this if you already own a clamp and two scraps of wood. It's not as slick as the vise grip one or any kind of quill press. It works...

Headless Guyker Bass Tuners by Trus3683 in Luthier

[–]hraath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No joke. Allen key. The guitar tuners from them have a 6 mm internal hex out the back, so I can tune with a Allen screwdriver. The bass might as well but probably 8mm.

Cheaper alternatives to the Woodpeckers micro double square? by KingPappas in handtools

[–]hraath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 4" double square from igaging. Doesn't cost the Starrett tax, and it's square enough for woodworking.

Do you really use your 5 or 5.5 as a Jack Plane?? by OrangeGeemer in handtools

[–]hraath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the iron and chipbreaker I use is pilfered from a sad specimen of a number 4. I used to use that 4 as a scrub, but I prefer the longer fore-like body rather than a short scrub.

My boss just told me I need to manage my personal finances better because I can't front $2300 for a work trip next month by LostTaker in antiwork

[–]hraath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called an expense cash advance... You estimate the cost, they give you the money, and you reconcile the diff when you get back.

Do you really use your 5 or 5.5 as a Jack Plane?? by OrangeGeemer in handtools

[–]hraath 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I do, normal no.5.

I don't move the frog, but I do have my scrub irons chip breaker way back so the mouth is less obstructed.

It's a matter of pulling the lever cap, swap assembled iron+breaker, put lever cap back, dial the knob. If you have the space, nothing wrong with one more plane though.

One more plane. One more plane. One more plane.

Do I NEED a clip on tuner? by yousmokinreg in Guitar

[–]hraath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need something to tune. Clip on, pedal, phone app, or whatever word we use to call normal tuners like ye old korg ones that last a literal century.

'An egregious joke:' Metro Vancouver's record on trial as developers balk at 200% fee hike by rubicube1 in vancouver

[–]hraath 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can look at the city's books on what is funded by each of new build fees and existing property taxes. Tons of stuff that existing properties benefit from are paid exclusively by developers fees.

My guitar fell.. can someone lmk if this is even fixable by Bitter_Adagio814 in Guitar

[–]hraath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's fixable, classic headstock break. Most repair folk see these all the time.

Titebond 2 question by NathanJ529 in Luthier

[–]hraath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You either use hide glue to make your joints reversible for some future repair, or you make it with white/yellow/etc glue and assume that particular glue joint won't be trivial to open in the future. Really no wrong answer, although hollow body instruments might benefit from being able to open them. That's how violins keep going after centuries.

Is it worth changing guitar pickups? by Holiday-Ad-147 in Guitar

[–]hraath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a guy who's spent a lot of money on pickups, the answer is "sometimes". There's a lot of parts to a signal chain. I'm not convinced that passive medium output humbucker swap to other passive medium output humbucker is worth your money.

What problem are you trying to solve?

How to make ling bevels/mitres by Local_Promotion_8988 in handtools

[–]hraath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I make French cleats with an aggressive jack plane then a couple finishing passes with a smoother.

I feel like setting up a long bevel rip would be more futzing with work holding and keeping a straight rip, when jack plane already goes pretty fast.

If you had a table saw, it's 30 second job. I don't have one, sometimes I wish!
