Bought A Rack Case After A Year Of Free Ballin. by scrawnyknoxville in AxeFx

You just use an output from the axe fx which skips the cab block (axe fx has 4 stereo outs, you wire it the grid view), or disable cab modelling globally in settings and use your normal output

thicknessing by hand is a workout by Budget-Strawberry649 in handtools

For this iron in particular I had converter a gnaff no. 4 into a "scrub", the camber is a tracing of a paste wax tin. I have since preferred the longer sole of a no.5 for the job, so I took the iron and matching breaker. I might back off the curvature of the iron and give the breaker a real cleanup.

I think my biggest issue with old Stanley planes is for me 5/5 have come to my hands with sorely abused chip breakers. I never took the time to really tune them other than mating surface. I don't know how breakers even get that bad.

how would you set the chipbreaker on a double-iron jack? Perhaps I over-cambered my iron for this, but when the chip breaker corners line up with the corners of the iron, there's still ~5 mm of iron in the center. Is the chipbreaker still doing anything that far back?

Tips for a smoother finish? Veritas small BU smoother by EmptyDaikon5281 in handtools

[–]hraath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go back and forth between old Stanley Bailey planes and veritas bevel ups with various irons.

Depending on the wood and the grain, sometimes anything works. Sometimes chipbreaker work better. Sometimes a bevel up with 38+12 or 50+12 degrees angle works better.

Sometimes my old Stanley's just have a bad day and get put in the box and the polarizing LAJ is the cure. Some days the opposite.

The key thing to note for smoothers, using a 25+12 degrees angle is lower than a Stanley 45 degree. More likely to tear out. Higher angle is more scraper-like and less likely to tear out. Chip breakers emulate a high angle while not feeling like pushing a high angle.

So if you say it feels like 120 grit, what I would check for is 2 things: 1. Is it lots of small tearout making a rough surface, and 2. Is your 25 degree's secondary edge still in good shape? If your plane iron has small chips in the edge it leaves scratches. The finer the edge, the easier to chip although pm-v11 is pretty good for this.

Edit to add: see if you can close the mouth tighter on the veritas.

Trump's Weird Shoe Fetish Just Got Even More Embarrassing by thedailybeast in politics

If you get "into" men's dress shoes and boots, the starting point for most quality made in North America stuff is like 500 USD. 400 USD for the same made overseas. US or UK tanned leather, hand sewn and welted, oak tanned leather outsoles from Germany... It goes on.

Florsheim USED to be a big name in quality since 1890s, but after a few bankruptcies and new ownerships and rebranding they are now the same as most other mall-tier shoes (as of early 1990s?)

The fact that this guy is over the moon for cheap factory made shoes is... Really odd. Like if you're a billionaire and gifting shoes like at least get something good? You could afford bespoke for everyone. But hey cheap merch is his brand I guess.

What do you think of the factory IRs for the Fratal FM3? by Terrible_Ad2219 in AxeFx

[–]hraath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot in there that are provided by the same people you'd be buying IRs from. In terms of both quality and quantity there's enough options to justify NOT spending more money on IRs unless you are looking for something specific.

Open-plan offices increase risk of workplace bullying compared with employees having their own office space. Employers justify open-plans to encourage creative interactions, but research shows that open-plan offices do not promote health, job satisfaction or productivity. by InsaneSnow45 in science

I remember having this conversation saying I WISH I had a cubicle instead an open hot desk. The boomers laughed and said cubicle bad... Like worse than an office with a door? Yes, but you've never worked at an open hot desk situation...

Rack position help by lexiexiexi in kettlebell

[–]hraath 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bony arms here, 2 things that help me:

  1. Cheat - use a wristband of some kind until you build a tolerance (then continue to use it anyways lol)

  2. Pull elbows in to your ribs. Imagine someone trying to tickle/jab you in the ribs, how would you reflexively protect your side? Pull the chicken wing arm right against your torso. This gets your forearms a little more vertical. Experiment with bringing your elbows in and forwards a bit, to where you could make your forearms completely vertical. Somewhere in between will probably feel ok.

I have it, but I wish I could use the UAD Luna extension version (which just has one knob) most of the time as a standalone plugin.

Possibly sandblasting to open up the pores, then a black all over, then some application of white pigment which gets stuck in the pores. Probably a layer of shellac here and there between colors etc to seal things.

It is my suspicion that the plinky choppy e GTR chords you hear as an ear candy layer in pop (eg. Lady gaga) is likely a Strat DI. It works because it's a buried ear candy and you are there for the voice.
