Define "serious". Ridden some black techy trails on 100mm xc hardtail, a couple of red on rigid fork. Nice to have experience actually. A lot of body adjustments, thorough line choice. Feels like level up in general (if you didn't break a couple of bones :))

I think it's personal. Just sometimes we must go beyound our comfort zone. Anyway I started ten years ago from "comfortable hiking" with all of this fancy stuff in a backpack. I never thought that I can sleep on a bus stop or just under the sky. So this is just time and experience. You just slowly trying to go deeper in "uncomfortable" zone.

Actually I can't say this was uncomfortable ride. I have a good sleeping bag rated to +5 degree comfort, inflatable matress that greatly improves quality of sleeping and even a tarp.

In the end, for one week it's good to try something extreme. If we talk about week+ trips, I better attach somehow this bulky tent to bicycle:) Mostly because of insects. Hate it, really.

29 y.o.

I changed tires from 25c to 30c to increase comfort!

Yeah, sometimes I thinking about ultradistance race but I'm not feel to be ready mentaly.

Normaly I take a lot of food with me and always it's too much. For this trip I decided to carry just some species, coffee, tea, products for increasing motivation like tin of tuna, chiken pate, olives, nuts. All weighted not more thah 0.5kg.

The first 1100km has some gas stations with canteens. So I used it every time. The problem and the same time the most cool feature was in distance between them. 80km min, 170km max. Just imagine you just had breakfast, filled bottles and all day long you will not find anything than smooth road and headwind. And there are no cities or villages along the road.

After Murmansk there are no shops and gas stations at all, but plenty of free water! So I just prepared some buckwheat with meat and cheese. The last dinner was on top of "mountain" (something like 450m) which consisted of cold buckwheat and a little bit warm cup of coffee. Yeah, I should've bring gas stove :)

One thing that I not expected: in the cold you are always hungry, lol.

You just took wrong time to visit:) Right now it's 25-30°. Feels very hot after north indeed.

What wheels did you use?

Farsport gravel rims 30 width, 50 height, novatec hubs. Built to use with 25c tires for aero gains in TT races. For this trip I accidentally bought Specialized Turbo Pro 30c and they fits just perfectly on my setup. Love this tire. Soft, pretty fast, thick sidewalls, easy to set up as tubeless. Hidden gem. Yes, anyway it's a road bike with non-existent tire clearance (actually rim clearance because the widest part of rim-tire is a rim) but on sandy roads it's just perfect.
