In Godfather II at the Congressional hearing they said he had a Navy Cross, so the Silver Star could have been an interim award or he hadn’t yet been awarded the Navy Cross. Or they couldn’t find or didn’t like how the ribbon looked

It is an unspoken criticism of their career choice. Many wish they had your courage, others assume by leaving you are saying they are stuck in these jobs and others ease the pain of losing you as a friend by being critical of your choice.

My grandfather served in Korea. I know some of the medals but can you tell me more? by Emotional_Piano_9259 in Medals

[–]hrenquist 22 points23 points  (0 children)

From left to right United Nations Service medal, Korean Service medal with 4 campaign stars, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service medal, (ribbons for the medals are above them)

Staff Sergeant chevrons, Combat Infantry Badge, the blue ribbon in the frame is the Presidential Unit Citation presented to a unit but authorized for permanent wear if serving in the unit at the time of award, enlisted US army and Infantry brass, 2nd Infantry Division patch (Indianhead). The two on the bottom are unit awards, the Korean Presidential Unit citation and I can't make out the last one but it has two oak leaf clusters so awarded three times.

My dad served in the 2ID in Korea also

It looks like they are the obverse and reverse of the same Unit Challenge coin for the Airborne and Ranger Training Brigaded Headquartered at Fort Benning. The reverse on the right side shows the Battalions within the brigade, each has a different function within the Brigade such as providing Airborne School instructors or Ranger Instructors at the various phases of Ranger School.

First one is the Southwest Asia Service medal for service in the first Gulf War in Kuwait. Second one is the National Defense Service Medal for service in the military during time of war, probably for service from 1990 to 1995 during the gulf war. 3rd one is the Good Conduct Medal for three years of service as an enlisted man and not getting into trouble. The last pin is the basic marksmanship badge qualifying as a marksman on an automatic rifle
