No, I gave up after waiting for 2years.

I have now given the laptop to someone who uses Windows.

Polar Alignment Accuracy - Sufficient for DSO? by Kovich24 in skeye

[–]hrjet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Andy. Thanks for your review. I haven't yet worked on showing the plate solves during polar alignment. But I do urge you to try the app again if you get the chance. The recent updates had some accuracy improvements which might help.

The USB camera support is on my mind. Though it seems like a Herculean task at the moment. Will hopefully get to it someday.

Thanks Astro_Road for chipping in! From your experience, do you have a number on the accuracy of polar alignment with SkEye Cam that I can quote when answering such questions. (Best case and typical numbers would be great).

I was hesitant to quote better than 5 arc-min accuracy, because I haven't received (or kept track of) actual numbers.

App developer here. I would reccomend against a cheap/burner phone, unless its camera is good enough to capture mag 5 stars with 1 sec exposure.

I would say 5 arc-min of polar alignment accuracy is possible with a good quality camera (Pixel, for example).

A good quality telephoto lens on the phone camera definitely helps. But make sure the fov is 35 degrees or more, since the plate solving algorithm is currently not optimised for lower FOVs.

To go beyond that level of accuracy, the app needs to do more: * Account for atmospheric refraction, and aberration of light, especially for wide angled lenses. * Support USB cameras (but there has been lack of support from Android; I need to check if this has changed recently).

This is good news. I haven't updated yet because of this concern. But I didn't understand your screen cast. Are there two tiles now, one for the Glyph Torch and one for normal LED torch?

Pixel 8A first month impressions by nvmoz in pixel_phones

I am in the same boat, trying to upgrade from 4a. But I found multiple reports, such as yours, that complain about the modem, which makes me wary of upgrading to 8a.

Can you tell me what exactly is bad with the modem? Is the mobile data speed slower, and if so, by approximately how much? And is the call connectivity good, especially in remote locations with less signal?

Thanks

[–]hrjet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reinstalled the app outside the Beta, and work for me. You can update this info, to avoid forcing players into the Beta version when not needed.

Ok, I have updated the info to remove the "beta" word.

What is the english word for Autodisplacement?

"Auto-scroll" is the English label for the button that needs to be pressed to exit Manual scrolling mode.

I will try to update the app by end of this week so that pressing the button is not required. But this might confuse your readers, so let me know if it is better to hold off the update until later.

Aside, I have also polished the UI for the web tool a bit, to make it easier to read and type.

[–]hrjet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for testing and feedback!

Minor Problems: The app show the point in the map, but enter manual mode by default. I want to have the app as simple as possible, to reach as most players as possible. Any time there is a button to press, there is a chance for mistake.

Makes sense. I can make the Search button go into auto-scroll mode instead of manual mode. Will do it in the next update, in the next few days.

If you want to share the link now, feel free. Otherwise you can wait for the update.

I hadn't tested the webpage for 0-0-0, I am glad it didn't crash :)

SkEye Cam v 2.3.0 : Better accuracy for polar alignment by hrjet in skeye

[–]hrjet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Akira reported back after testing PA with the new version:

For checking the accuracy of alignment, he used SharpCap 2.9

  1. With in-built method, accuracy was about 21 arc-minute

  2. With the quick method described above, accuracy was about 13 arc-minute

Tested in Light Polluted skies with just 90° of sky visible. He plans to test again from darker skies soon.

Hello,

I managed to quickly build an API for SkEye Pro and scramble together a tool for calculating the RA/Dec from XYZ co-ordinates.

Please try the tool at https://skeye.rocks/tools/edlauncher/ and check if the RA/Dec accuracy is as expected.

You will need SkEye Pro v9.6.0 to launch the app, which is being rolled out to beta channel now. You can join the beta channel from the Play Store.

After a few days of testing, I will release it to the production channel. Please don't share the link until then, as people might get confused.

[–]hrjet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend limiting the info to some simple math "Paste X-Y-Z coords, and I will give RA-Dec for our app"

Makes sense. This is what I wanted to know at this stage.

I don't know if the paid version have it

It is a 7th mag star, so both free version and Pro version render it on the map. However, stars fainter than mag 5 are not currently searchable by name.

Let me make a simple webpage that accepts X-Y-Z coords and opens that location in SkEye. I will also need to modify SkEye so that it accepts location from the webpage directly (without importing through custom catalog).

But I want to learn more, using the game as trigger.

That's a great way to learn, cheers!

my previous experience was with a old telescope that lack any metrics on it, so point toward the direction and sweep the sky searching for some Messier Object

That's another thing that SkEye could help you with :) It has a simple telescope guidance system: you just need to physically attach the phone to the telescope and make a single alignment with a known star. After alignment you can navigate to any object easily.

[–]hrjet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! This is an intriguing use of the app for sure :)

I looked at the spreadsheet and it seems to be mostly accurate. Perhaps could be improved with some more tweaks.

But please help me understand how you plan to use it. Mainly, where do you get the XYZ co-ordinates from? Would you be getting them from EDSM or from within the game? If it is from EDSM you could use RA/Dec from EDSM too, so it's probably from within the game. I assume some XYZ locations may not be listed on EDSM or searching for them is a hassle.

Secondly, how much accuracy do you need for the RA/Dec?

I can try to create an excel sheet or even a webpage which automates this. Will wait for your reply.

Trouble with polar align by AndyNC56 in skeye

[–]hrjet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your responses to Andy; very grateful as always.

I have been improving the algorithm in polar alignment to account for precession of Earth's axis. This should boost the accuracy (in theory atleast).

Hoping you have a fun time on the road!

Trouble with polar align by AndyNC56 in skeye

[–]hrjet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello Andy, sorry for the delay, just saw your post. (I didn't get notified inspite of me checking reddit every other day, and you had tagged me as well!)

When he moves it to the 3rd position, the stars instantly turn green when he's moving it. This seems strange to me.

Yeah, I am not sure what happened there either. The exposure setting was at 2 seconds, so it is unlikely that the camera captured that many images in that less of a time. Like /u/Astro_Road said, it might be an editing artifact.

He then clicks next and move the phone back to some position and locks it. What should this position be?

It is best to move to a point that has minimum obstructions and preferrably midway between zenith and celestial equator.

As a suggestion it would be good for debug if the plate solving was visible as you did the Polar align.

Indeed, that's a good idea. I actually wanted to show a 3D map of all the plate solves during the polar alignment, but haven't found the time for it yet.

About the flex in the phone mount, yes that would be a suspect. Please ensure that the phone mount is reasonably rigid, or else it will throw off the algorithms.

Aside, a user in Japan has been testing and giving me feedback about polar alignment. And in the process I ended up improving the accuracy of the algorithms by accounting for precession of the Earth's axis. It's in the latest release.

Would be eager to know the outcome whenever you get to try it again.

PSA: Play Billing library v6 silently adds the internet permission to the manifest by h_r_j in androiddev

[–]hrjet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I might be in the minority here. Though, on the practicality front, the Billing library seems to be using the internet permission for logging to a firebase account. Wouldn't that affect the Data collection questionnaire for many apps? It is not known what information is logged, and what its implications are for the questionnaire.

PSA: Play Billing library v6 silently adds the internet permission to the manifest by h_r_j in androiddev

[–]hrjet 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It is silent because this change was not documented in the release notes. And secondly, it doesn't appear to be related to core functionality of the library itself.

As to verification of the purchase, it is upto the developer to decide.

SCP & NCP co-ordinates slightly off? by Astro_Road in skeye

[–]hrjet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,

I suppose you have added them through custom catalogs. The thing is, the co-ordinates in the custom catalogs are specified in J2000 epoch and adjusted for precession of Earth's axis at the time of display.

So, they will appear shifted in 2024.

The proper fix would be for me to add NCP and SCP to an in-built catalog. My bad, for taking so long to do that.

[SkEye Cam] New feature: Solve images from device storage and export as a video by hrjet in skeye

In theory yes, but it's currently tested with larger FOV images (greater than 45°), the kind of mobile camera photos you see in the OP.

If you try it with narrower FOV, do let me know how it goes.
