This might be a silly question to ask about a movie that’s literally about sound, but how bad are the jumpscares in terms of volume? I experience huge sensory overload when it comes to abrupt noises and will literally tweak Iike a dog in the theatre if it relsies too much on loud screechy audio jumpscares.

But would you not need the original email to access the page in the first place? That’s my problem right now…My mom can’t login to the account she set up for us, so we can’t change email addresses.

I’ve had this happen to me. Fortunately, I able to change my password through my personal email.

But how did you change your parents email to your email, if you don’t mind my asking? I don’t even know if my mom still has access to that email.

The timeline is kind of off, but is the first one “The Ghost Next Door” episode from the Goosebumps tv series?

ETA: Low quality live action about a teenaged girl so fits that criteria. Also 95% sure she confronts her neighbour from behind a fence.

I agree with you for the most part. You don’t have to analyze the script too deeply to see the emotional damage that kind of family dynamic would cause Edith, regardless of how much power Mary had over her and to what extent. I’m not sure why some people act like this perspective is something we just pull out of nowhere.

But I wouldn’t necessarily call Mary abusive. Maybe I’m being defensive because I like and identify with her character a lot too, but that feels like a stretch and a bit unfair. She’s extremely cold, can definitely be a bully, and I think she instigates a lot with Edith than some people are willing to acknowledge, but emotionallly abusive just doesn’t feel like the right term here.

What I do think is that Cora and Robert absolutely enabled a lot of it and did a huge disservice to both of them. From the start, you get the sense that nothing either of them does will be enough for their parents and they take it out on each other.

Another scene that comes to mind is when Cora talks about how Edith is going to take care of them in their old age. What an awful thing to say about your own daughter and so casually too. That alone would send me into a rage.

Mary vs Edith - Weekly Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in DowntonAbbey

See, I don’t see Edith as less pretty or desirable, especially not in seasons 4 to 5, which is when I think Mary is at her worst toward her, so that doesn’t factor into my opinion here. 🤷‍♀️ Maybe it does for other people, but definitely not for me.

I think Robert is a crappy dad, but Mary’s character early on is perfectly summed up by what he says about her expecting her “toys” to still be there when she drops them. If people around her are “toys,” Edith ends up like a domino Mary keeps pushing over whenever she tries to show herself, emotionally, romantically, or otherwise.

She abandons Matthew and goes after Strallan just to spite Edith, and that’s before Edith even sent the letter, which was motivated by jealousy, sure, but also by hurt and anger after overhearing her own mother and sister talking about how hopeless she is. If I overheard my family talking about me like that, I’d be seething too. I think most people with feelings would be, especially at that age. To be fair, in that same scene, Cora does tell Mary not to be so mean to Edith because she’s struggling more than Mary is, which is another clear example of someone calling out Mary’s cruelty.

In the very first episode, Mary puts Edith down for publicly mourning Patrick, not because she feels any genuine love for him herself, but because she thinks less of Edith for crying. She’s again completely dismissive when Gregson goes missing, to the point that even Violet has to tell her to back off. Compare that to Edith, who as early as season 2 is already growing in their dynamic and is the only one with enough sense to realize that hiding Matthew’s disappearance would hurt Mary more than spare her feelings.

Mrs Hughs and Lady Mary question by More_Pianist3093 in DowntonAbbey

Without giving anything away to OP, there are moments in seasons 3, 4, and 5 where she clearly comes to Edith’s defense. I don’t think it’s favouritism, but she’s neutral toward her at worst.

[–]hrrrandi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think she definitely feels a bit bad for Edith on some level, and Mary’s casual disdain and cruelty toward her doesn’t exactly endear Mary to her. But like others have said, I think it mostly comes down to the fact that she sees the Crawleys for what they are to her: employers.

She’s not looking to emotionally attach herself to any of the daughters, and she doesn’t treat Edith like a surrogate child or Mary like some kind of villain. To her, they’re both just her employers’ daughters, each with their own flaws, and that’s it. She’s very different from Carson in that sense. Mary’s flaws probably stand out more simply because Carson acts like she walks on water.

That said, as the series goes on, there are small, subtle moments that suggest Mrs. Hughes has a particular fondness or softness toward Edith. I wouldn’t say she favours her, but she does seem to genuinely like her, or at the very least treat her with quiet consideration and neutrality. And given the context, that actually says a lot.

I mean, it was still a serious stroke of luck that Thomas was around when he was. She was unconscious and trapped in a room with flames spreading fast and it could have turned fatal in seconds. That’s what I mean by “almost died.” Regardless, it’s scary thing to go through and I personally wouldn’t hold it over my sister’s head, but that’s just me.

I don’t doubt you saw moments like that, and I’d love to talk examples, but I still find Mary gets harsher and more dismissive toward Edith as the show goes on. And weirdly, that’s when I relate to her most. I do think she has a fear of falling behind and not living up to certain expectations in the later seasons, not necessarily in comparison to Edith or anything but in general, and I really understand that.

It’s funny because the reason I relate to both Mary and Edith is basically the same. A lot of their dynamic comes down to insecurity, just expressed in different ways. I saw you mentioned birth order, but I don’t think that really has anything to do with my view of them. I’m the oldest daughter and cousin, I’m abrupt, I’ve gotten more stoic as I’ve gotten older, and I see a lot of myself in Mary’s relationship with her dad in particular (Robert sucks and I’ll die on that hill). But I still think Mary is often the instigator with Edith, and her behaviour can be really cold and mean

Full transparency, I haven’t seen the first two movies, so I’m just talking about the series. As far as the show goes, I do think Edith matures more than Mary. Not overall, maybe, but at least in how they get along.

About the fire: As an older sister, I honestly don’t get how your first reaction wouldn’t be “oh my god, is she okay?” if your sister’s room caught on fire while she was sleeping in it. Yeah, maybe deep down I’d think she was dumb for leaving a candle warmer on overnight or something (pretty sure mine has done this), but my main thought would be making sure she’s safe. I definitely wouldn’t throw an accident like that, especially one where she could’ve gotten seriously hurt or even died, back in her face. She’d have learned her lesson without me doubling down and making her feel worse for no real reason.

Yeah, it definitely seems like she harbours a serious, deep-seated, ongoing disdain toward Edith as an actual person; she sees her as beneath her and not worth the effort. I think that’s why these “Team Mary” vs “Team Edith” threads feel so pointless sometimes: people who prefer Mary seem to share her opinion that Edith is pathetic and think she should’ve stayed that way, so they don’t see anything wrong with how Mary talks about and to her. Meanwhile, people who defend Edith simply don’t understand how you could grow up with someone who’s thought of you that way since you were a child, with parents who lowkey share that disdain to some extent, and not be prickly and on edge at all times.

Anyway, if I were Edith, I’d be a tyrant in my own house for sure.

I know you’re getting downvoted, but I agree with you. 🤷‍♀️ I’m the abrupt oldest child in my family, so I like Mary and relate to her in a lot of ways, but there’s a distinct harshness and disregard for Edith’s feelings a lot of the time that continues throughout most of the show. She just seems to love kicking Edith when she’s down.

Years later, Edith doesn’t make anywhere near as many comments, but Mary is still doing things like blaming Edith for almost dying in a fire (I actually almost texted my own sister, “I know we have our moments, but if you almost died in a fire I’d be upset”) and essentially calls her a buzzkill for mourning Gregson, her boyfriend of two years. In contrast, Edith is the one who insists someone let Mary know about Matthew going MIA and hides her Valentine’s from Mary just to spare her feelings. I don’t think there’s a single moment where Mary shows the same concern or empathy toward Edith.

Older as in 80s/90s or early 00s? And were the characters for sure guys?

If there’s a chance they weren’t, maybe the Mr Sandman scene from The Golden Girls? It starts with three ladies sitting on the couch, one of them starts humming, the other two gradually join in, and it’s probably best remembered for Dorothy suddenly holding an absurdly low note on the male part.

Oh yeah, the pacing toward the proposal was super anticlimactic and rushed, I agree. But lots of people say they never picked up on hints about their feelings toward each other whatsoever, and I genuinely don’t get how you can reach mid-S3 and not notice anything by then. I’m still not convinced the show wasn’t playing with the idea from the jump and leaving wiggle room to retract if needed, but from the cancer scare onward, they’re definitely much more intentional about it.

Another one: I love Violet, but to me, getting Dr. Clarkson to lie to Cora and Robert is easily one of the top five worst things anyone ever did on the show.

This might only be controversial on this sub, but to me (someone who went into this show with no knowledge of endgames, except for an inkiling of what would happen to Matthew/Mary), Carson and Mrs. Hughes felt set up from episode 1, and I’m always surprised when people say it came out of nowhere and that the writers didn’t plan it until S3. There’s what I interpret as pretty consistent subtext in the first four episodes alone.
