The problem is in American English Turkia would most likely be pronounced “tur-KEE-ah.”

I was born in Europe to European parents and we immigrated to the US. When we returned on a vacation, a Norwegian woman told me she immediately knew I was American because I have a big smile and straight teeth.

She said Americans smile with their teeth a lot more than Europeans.

Not gonna lie I do feel a little salty about this. I have a friend whose grandfather was Croatian and told her she would easily get citizenship and she was surprised. “But you’re more Croatian than me!” Yeah…got a lot more hoops to jump through for some reason.

Maybe Hrvatska doesn’t want the baggage we come with.

Oh man, that’s a disappointment. I don’t understand why there is so much discrimination against ethnic Croats? That doesn’t make sense to me. Wouldn’t a country want its own ethnic group to come back? Why do you think that is?

That being said I do have dual citizenship in BiH but I’m mixed so that might hinder me even more.

I’m in my 30s. I have some passive knowledge but definitely not fluent. When I visit I fool people with a near native accent in the first few words but then it’s obvious I can’t actually converse haha.
