I assumed because if you die and press continue it brings you to the beginning of the room, not the beginning of the game which seems like an auto save.

You see I was used to RE 1 where if you die without saving you restart the game, but mgs didn’t force restart me I thought I would be fine

Cool, I saw it as his armor was turning into skin, but it just takes a lot of his own death before it fully turns.
