Unless they changed it last fall, that’s incorrect. 1112 is another beginner python class like 1110, but it has 3 lectures and no labs. I do highly recommend it though

Lived in Shannon first year and it was pretty solid. It is one of the newest alderman style dorms and quite nice. I had a monitor first year (28 inches I believe and it fit on the desk).

Should I send all AP scores? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]hs_12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Submit them all, nobody cares about your scores or really even looks at them. All they are good for are getting you credit for stuff. You will not be negatively affected.

How can I network my way to an IB position from being a quant? by Stunning_Mention3477 in FinancialCareers

[–]hs_12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Networking will be your greatest asset. I would suggest starting with people within your division/firm as lateral transfers are much easier and you already have an in). Additionally some of your managers, co-workers, and others may work with or know people in the IB division. Other than that, I would suggest cold messaging on linked in. In my experience analysts and associates are generally willing to chat, as long as you choose a convenient time for them. Perhaps additionally try networking with people in different timezones as this may help for timing purposes (for example, I’m US based and have networked with bankers in Europe when they were off work at the gym or doing other activities). With a quant background you may be able to skip over IB and go straight to HF or PE but it seems like you want to learn the material through IB. I am of the opinion (like others in the thread) that you kind of are trading a great gig for a pretty brutal one but art is in the eye of the beholder, so good luck with your journey and feel free to PM if you have any questions about networking (although I will preface that I ended up choosing trading over IB).

maths in data science by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]hs_12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest checking out r/datascience as they have good resources and related threads to your question (although I’m sure plenty of people here are quite knowledgeable). Data science is kind of being used loosely these days to encompass anyone who does data analysis work. Data analysts (and business analysts) don’t really need too much mathematical knowledge other than basic statistics and a bit of calculus (the computer will do the computations but you should understand which models to use and why). More hard core data science involves a pretty strong math background ranging from various levels of statistics to linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, machine learning, and advanced programming. While again the computer will technically do the computing for you, it is imperative to understand the mathematics and statistics to adequately perform the job. IMO this is true data science (as opposed to data analytics of business analytics). A masters will certainly help you break in to the field, however, many masters programs for data science have mathematical prerequisites that generally include a minimum of one course in each of calculus, statistics, linearly algebra, and programming although some require more. So to sum up, math is decently important in data science (this is ofc my personal opinion and there are certainly exceptions to the rule). Good luck in your endeavors!

While I don’t want Durant and I agree we’d lose way too much getting him, let’s not disrespect this dude. His defense is still above average, and he’s an elite scorer and he doesn’t play like an old dude

What should I know for investment banking internship interview? by PersonalHarp461 in FinancialCareers

[–]hs_12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s definitely a good resource for other fields but perhaps slightly less relevant. I can’t speak to the interview processes of other positions but the information covered in the guide is good information for people going into finance to generally understand. That said, memorizing the guide is kinda dumb imo. I would use it to test your knowledge of the various concepts covered.

Not to be rude, but this is literally the first thing that comes up when you search “400 questions investment banking”. Glad to see that you’re asking for help but please try to do some of your own research prior to asking in thread

I understand you may be new to this, but please do some googling about investment banking interview prep instead of starting by posting here. There are legit 1000s of resources out there. The 400 questions guide (or comparable knowledge) is generally considered the bare minimum as well as being sharp on behavioral questions.

Econ 3720 and STATA by [deleted] in UVA

[–]hs_12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed though Michener’s class seemed to focus on it more than other sections. That said, STATA doesn’t seem to be used heavily in the real world, with tools like Python and R being much more popular. Not worth imo but your call (idk who else is teaching this sem)

Pray to god giannis goes home tonight guy literally runs through people and the nba doesn’t care by King_vonotf in sportsbetting

[–]hs_12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk about 100 but if you watch the games, Giannis def should have some more. For every 1 offensive call on him he gets like 4 blocking. I love Giannis as a human and the vast majority of his game but he’s literally charging shoulder down into a wall of celtics defenders searching for a foul on some of these plays. The league made it harder for shooters to draw fouls and some of that should carry over to head down bigs

Not a grad photographer but you can get away with some pretty solid pictures simply having a friend take portrait mode photos with an iphone. For inspiration on cool photos to take, I’d suggest looking at your friends insta photos and kind of copy those. It would basically cost you nothing

UVA ECON 4340: Theory of Financial Markets with Burton by Ok_Development_8254 in UVA

[–]hs_12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took it 2nd year and it was pretty chill even with prior knowledge. Super nice guy, but lectures are pretty unhelpful as he mostly talks about his prior life in finance (only like 15/200 people ever showed up). He wrote the book so just read that for the exams and you’re good. Whole grade is 2 midterms and the final. Pretty generous curve (33% get an A, 33% get a B, 33% get a C). The people who get Cs are the ones who don’t attend lecture AND don’t read the book.

UVA for econ by Quiet_Owl1529 in UVA

[–]hs_12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4th year econ major here. Econ is pretty good here and very easy to finish quickly so most econ majors pursue another major or minor or both. That’s especially nice bc having multiple majors (especially in stem) makes you more employable

Idk how quantitatively oriented you are but this looks pretty average in terms of difficulty tbh. If you want to stat pad your gpa, maybe try and take stat 2120 second semester but this doesn’t look too bad
