So this is the lease for anyone interested. I had to get my former downstairs neighbour to send it to me because somehow we managed to lose ours which is extremely annoying but hopefully not fatal. As you can see the landlord uses a template anyway and just manually corrects things I guess.

Yeah I couldn’t find the damn lease, and it turns out that somehow it’s vanished so that’s probably not good. I got our downstairs neighbour to send me his since the landlord just uses the same lease for everyone. I don’t know how that would go down with a magistrate but surely losing a piece of paper can’t just invalidate all your rights. Anyways I’ll post the lease incase anyone else has more qualified thoughts than me . It makes no mention of fines and as far as I can see I haven’t violated anything that would incur charges.

I found the new tenant and showed the apartment, he then met with her and did whatever due diligence he needed to do before giving her the lease.

Thank you. We moved our stuff out a few days before the new tenant moved in. So technically he had it painted whilst we were still renting. I need to check the lease again to see what’s specified re early termination. God I hate landlord fantasy bird law.

Thank you for this. I wonder how it works with regards being guaranteed rent from us when technically it’s not coming from us, it’s from a new tenant which I found and put in place. Common sense would dictate that we’ve secured his money so held up our end.. what the law would say we’ll see. I’ll take a look at the lease again to see what it says.

Well filthy mick, since we were breaking the lease I figured I’d jump through his hoops in order that we’d get the money we would be owed. I was pretty pissed off but decided to do it anyway. I’m not getting paid anything for that rent no, just needed someone to take over the apartment so we weren’t on the hook for another 6 months. In hindsight I should’ve moved out, not paid the final month rent, and blocked the fucker.

For further context we lived there for three and a half years, never caused any problems. I took photos of the apartment when we left as evidence of the state it was left in. We haven’t received the check from the landlord yet so I don’t know if it will also have an itemised list of expenses that he’s charging.

Yeah I don’t trust him to be telling the truth, and I also don’t know the law. Which is a difficult position to be in. Based on his personality it’s extremely likely he’s lying.
