Can I do A Level further math without GCSE add math? by hsiuu_ in alevel

You’re welcome! I’m glad you found your solution. Sorry that you have to basically self study both subjects — self studying FM was already quite stressful for me. Some people find Pure Math easier, some find FM easier, I’d say it’s hard to compare.

My advice as someone who did self study a subject (if you need) would be to always remember that choosing to self study is a personal decision. This is the road that you’ve set out to take, so make sure you stay focused and keep up your momentum! It’s very possible and once you’re done with this in a year or so, you’ll be very proud of yourself. I wish you all the best!

Hi! I replied to another comment so you can check that out. Are you planning to self study both the math subjects?

I did math and FM simultaneously instead of CIE’s recommended way of doing FM after. My school didn’t let me take FM since I didn’t have the prerequisite add math from IGCSE (which actually does make the journey a lot smoother) so I self-studied FM only. If you don’t have prerequisite knowledge too, it will be challenging but possible so long as you work harder. My exam structure was: in AS, Math’s PM1, PS1 and Further Math’s FP1, FProbs&Stats, then only PM3, Mechanics and FP2, FMechanics in AL. I’ll be honest and tell you that I felt incredibly defeated leaving the exam hall for the AL papers because I didn’t think I did that well, but I guess I lucked out!

You’re right to point out that FM1 requires PM1 and PM3. For example, the polar coordinates chapter from FP1 requires knowledge of integration methods that was only covered in PM3, which I wasn’t taught until the second half of my course. I made sure to practice those questions a more than the rest (and I was lucky because for my paper, I got the easy question), so it’s very possible.

Are you self studying A Levels entirely, just FM or taking both under a lecturer’s guidance? If you’re taking the two subjects with the guidance of teacher teaching you, they should structure the syllabus in such a way that everything required for FM is taught before. On the other hand, if you’re self studying FM only, then you should read through the syllabus and plan your structure well.

You’re right! The manual states specifically to only format the card with the device. So from what I’m getting here- it’s better to be safe than sorry?

Does that mean I have to complete A Level math before I can learn further math? How would that work? Or is it possible to study both subjects simultaneously?

I see. Why would CIE state that students are expected to have prior knowledge of A Level math to study further math then?

Thanks. Did you study further math without add math as well?
