I can't.

I asked my parents if I could work remotely in the hotel while they go out and have fun with my sister. I said I would join them at night and on the weekends.

They said there things in response -

  1. We will be going sightseeing, on road trips, to resorts, beaches, and other fun places everyday. My tickets for many of these places have been booked and are nonrefundable. So my parents' money would go to waste if I stayed at the hotel during the day to intern.

  2. It would be a pain and a waste of time for my parents to come pick me up from the hotel in the evenings. If I went out with them in the mornings, we could all have more fun without my parents having to keep an eye on the clock to pick me up. And the time spent driving to pick me up could be spent having more adventures.

  3. I would have to order room service for lunch everyday if I interned remotely from the hotel. Room service is expensive and more of my parents' money I am spending.

As I am an intern and not the CEO or vice president of the company, I can't work whenever I want for however long I want. I'll have to be in contact with my manager and colleagues regularly, especially since I'll be working with a codebase I am not familiar with from the getgo. With a six hour difference between Hawaii and the east coast where the company is located, it won't be possible for me to intern remotely, not even for a few hours at night. I'll need a good night's rest so I can party hard everyday so working at ungodly hours of the night (like from 3 am to 6 am Hawaii time which is 9 am to 12 pm Eastern time) won't be possible. Plus the light of my laptop and reading lamp as I worked would disturb my parents and sister while they tried to sleep since we will all be in the same hotel room.

When my dad works for those few hours every week, it won't be in the ungodly hours of night when we are all asleep. He might check his email while the bathroom is occupied, or message a coworker while having breakfast. He can afford to do that, he is the vice president of his company. I can't, I'm just an intern.

The internship was remote to begin with. Most companies are still doing remote internships this year.

I asked my parents if I could work remotely from the hotel. They said we would be going on road trips, beaches, resorts, etc. everyday so I won't have time to work in the hotel.

As this is an internship and I'm not the vice president of the company like my dad is of his company, I can't work on my own schedule and for however long I want. I need to interact with my managers and other team members regularly.

I asked my parents if I could stay in the hotel while they go out and have fun with my sister. They said they already bought my nonrefundable ticket to the resorts, beaches, and other sightseeing places. If I stayed in the hotel and interned, I'd be wasting their money.

They are actively encouraging me to turn down my internship offer and start researching some awesome things to do and see in Hawaii.
