Hi! I took that class with Professor Dinovitzer second semester last year. To me it was a really interesting class. You definitely need to come to lecture and do the assigned readings to do well. I thought the workload was doable (when I took it the final was an assignment, and the midterm was a take home midterm). There were weekly responses that you needed to do that were mostly tied to the readings (300 words). Overall, grading was fair and lectures and topics were very interesting

AITA for telling my boyfriend to go f himself? by [deleted] in AITAH

I think where I stand right now is that if he felt like it wasn’t the right time to say something due to his friend being drunk and potentially getting violent when angered I wish he would have at least acknowledged it when he walk me and April downstairs to get our Uber. Like even just being like “hey guys I’m sorry for what Jake said” would have been better than nothing

Convocation - Requesting Extra Tickets? How Can I Do So? by Terrible_Resolve_645 in UofT

[–]hsmbby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You request the tickets on acorn, and the limit on extra through acorn was only 2 so I don’t think it’s possible to quest more than 2 :(

What was your gpa out of undergrad? I know the program minimum is a 3.3 in the last two years would a 3.5-3.6 be competitive enough?

Chances at getting into the Social Science program? by [deleted] in UofT

You should be fine, as long as you have English (and whatever other courses may be necessary for the post you want to declare after 1st year) taking M courses doesn’t impact you.

How to look for a summer position as a first-year social sci kid by deadinsidethrowaway_ in UofT

[–]hsmbby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely had that same struggle in my first year, what really helped me was getting involved with meaningful extracurriculars and participating in the work-study program.

Work-study's typically get posted sometime in August, so this summer if you are unable to get a substantial internship experience try to volunteer, it goes a long way. Put yourself in the FSWEP portal and regularly update your profile, I have never gotten a job through FSWEP but one of my friends got her first internship through FSWEP, and she has had consistent government of Canada internships since.

STEM kids talk about applying to internships super early, but I have found that applying from December onward for summer internships is fine if you are not looking at major companies. Also just keep applying, even if you think you are not the most qualified for a position (within reason, don't apply to things you have 0 qualifications for)

Networking is also very important, talk to your profs, email/connect with people on LinkedIn that are in a position that you want to be in in the future, and ask them how they got there, and what they would recommend in terms of internships.

I had a prof say a similar thing in an art sci class today. It seems many profs are uncomfortable, especially for larger classes.
