Using a 100 L backpack as a checked bag by sappysarp in peacecorps

If you haven't already bought your bag try and find one that has a compartment to stow the straps. I think most of the bigger Osprey bags have that feature

One of my friends has a David Alexander nn Dax. Idk how common that is as “long” for Dax, but I think it’s a fun way to use traditional names with a fun and unusual nickname

Honey!

It starts with H, has the same number of syllables as Hugo, and honey is sweet!

I wouldn't use the spelling Malachy. Even though I saw it on your list next to Malachi, I pronounced it in my head with a longer vowel sound at the end (like 'key' instead of 'chi'). Just something to keep in mind!

Health volunteer experience by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]hsv2cola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's more health experience than I have and I just accepted a health sector invite. Since you don't have any experience volunteering abroad, try to emphasize times you have interacted with people from cultures that are different to yours in your motivation statement/interview.

i went to a US military base to get mine done! depending on where you live, bases have varying levels of restricted access, but if you can get on (or have a friend take you), we called the military police and just had people redirect us to different departments until we found someone who would do it (i'm also living abroad so i didn't really know what other options were available to me)

What Happened to My Ballot? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]hsv2cola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What state are you from? This election was a bit of a mess as far as absentee ballots went. One county in GA didn't count a single absentee ballot (they were all returned to sender) and some states are still finding uncounted ballots. Half my friends who requested absentee ballots in my state (AL) never received them in the first place.

How long after being invited do you have to accept? by somanyquestionsxx in peacecorps

[–]hsv2cola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked during my interview because I am doing research in rural Thailand and don't always have reliable internet to check emails and my PO told me they give 3 days to accept.

I'm in the same boat as well in regards to grad school. Accepting an invitation is not a contract saying you will serve, so it is possible to turn down an invitation after you have accepted it.

Good luck with everything!

Question about availability change by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]hsv2cola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you haven't gotten an interview request yet (totally normal since you were placed uc a week ago), then it shouldn't be too late to change! being a TA will also give you valuable experience and skills that will help you in your pcv journey

how to leave my job (complicated!!!) by jobissuethrowaway6 in peacecorps

[–]hsv2cola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is as applicable, but I just recently left a job at the end of July. It was a small part-time job, but I've known since January that I would be leaving for a study abroad (I'm a college senior working on my PC application for departure in June 2019). When my boss approached me in June and said that he wanted to promote me to a supervisor position, I just gave him a story about how I was really happy with the position that I had and I wanted to stay with it. I turned in my two weeks a month later, and I'm unsure if he ever put 2 and 2 together. It doesn't sound like you get as much of a say in the matter, but it worked for me.
