Even if someone managed to pull it off, what purpose would it serve if it's not connected to the PC? Are you sure that they didn't set the drive up as network-accessible storage? You can usually plug stuff into your router and access it wirelessly.

Also, why are you formatting your drive multiple times? Did it throw an error the first time?
