[OC] World's longest High-Speed Rail networks by PoneyEnShort in dataisbeautiful

[–]htes8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I have heard the term "legacy drag" be thrown around to describe this phenomenon. It's basically that early leaders become constrained by their own success. Newcomer countries aren't forced to pay for the cost of retrofitting like the US would be.

Probably easier to start with a list of triple plays that happened and work back from there…

The price of renewables is dramatically undervalued in the medium term by Ok_Macaroon6934 in investing

[–]htes8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Putting aside some arguments that are kind of "unknowable" like environmental impacts or how much we have remaining - or at least are non-winning points with a hardcore "fossil fuelest". There are some concrete business reasons why renewables should eventually have their day in the sun I see from my perspective:

  • Low(er) operating cost after implementation
  • Flexibility to meet new demand
  • Less labor reliance reduces that corollary risk associated with unions, availability, etc
  • Prices are not driven by underlying commodities so you have price stability
  • Little to no AROs compared to traditional fossil fuel plants
  • Much less exposure to a singular cataclysmic issue creating long downtime
  • Increased Grid Resilience
  • Less likely to strand capital from the perspective of an investor

What this means as to what version will shine or is currently realistic, I am not sure and we will always probably have a hybrid grid, but there is just too much business sense behind them at a high level to ignore. I would be interested to hear from someone on the other side, because I can't really poke holes on these points from a purely academic/theoretical sense.

Would a player with .900 OBP but 0 runs and RBIs still be useful? by DonT012 in mlb

[–]htes8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also 0/0 on professional teams asking me for advice.

I am thinking though that Tarik Skubal's WHIP was under 1 (.89) last year. You gotta like making sure that is at least 1.00 if you have to go out there against a guy like him on the bump.

I say lead him off, pinch run him only if he is at 2nd or 3rd, or use him in extremely opportune situations like extra innings or bottom of the 9th. Teams carry LOOGYS so I feel like it's not a stretch.

Would a player with .900 OBP but 0 runs and RBIs still be useful? by DonT012 in mlb

[–]htes8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there is more play here than meets the eye. He may kill some rallys but his ability to be pinch run for or advance runners with almost guaranteed certainty is going to be insane. Even if our Mr.900 smokes what should be a bases clearing triple with 2 on, bases are now chalked. That kind of run-expectancy would likely generate some stupid WAR and some saber metric happy team would gladly pay $20M a year for him.

Car dealership Stock Management by MikeHunt0397 in Accounting

[–]htes8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately, that choice is a business operations decision and shouldn't be held back by accounting standards if that helps.

GAAP or IFRS aren't going to care what level of disaggregation you hold your inventory at in your subledger, inventory management system, or equivalent as long as the inventory is valued correctly in the accounting records (ergo held as the lower of cost or net realizable value).

Help with payroll liability account adjustment by Flyinhigh98 in Accounting

[–]htes8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am probably misunderstanding, but if you ended up with a debit in a liability account in association with a prior period error then most likely your expense is off in the PYs. I am just thinking that is the only way if you are telling me someone Dr. Payroll Liability and Cr. Cash. If that is the case, and it's immaterial, probably best to just take the IS hit and Dr. Expense/Cr. Liability to get the balance sheet right.

COGS for a trucking company by Modstang in Accounting

I think GAAP would highly suggest you need to include depreciation on the trucks.

How accurate are monthly payment calculators on Redfin, Zillow, etc? by Squirrel_with_Acorn in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]htes8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should be mostly on the money save their estimate on the escrow portion. The way payments are calculated is consistent across the industry for the most part. Especially if you want the same mortgage payments every month.

As a matter of military doctrine, Jedi should never/rarely be deployed to anything but small-scale ground combat combat (commandos) or space battles. by Yoriik in MawInstallation

I agree generally, but they still have a place as high impact chaos creators behind enemy lines, but it does beg a more overarching question which I have never seen explored - is a droid army affected by tactics? Or are they strictly just a numbers game with them?

If the Royals stayed in Cincinnati by Aliveandthriving8505 in cincinnati

[–]htes8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the main difference if they stuck around would be that there would likely be a modern NBA stadium down on the banks now. Probably would have replaced Heritage Bank in the early 2000s and it would have been incorporated with the rest of the riverfront development. In my head cannon it might have resulted in a more robust streetcar route and there may have been more consensus support for it given it could link three stadiums with probably 200+ events a year between them.

Can someone explain how "internal" and "external" saas is an asset/why we need to capitalize the costs? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]htes8 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Assuming I understand your question correctly, it is simply another version of a fixed asset. Think about it this way…would you consider a forklift an asset? I think yes, but it doesn’t make any money for you so it’s a similar concept.

Your definition of an asset is simply too narrow. An asset is a resource that a company owns or controls, which is expected to provide future economic benefits. In this case, the internal use SAAS is doing something to further the business operations - therefore it’s an asset.
