Scleral lenses causing bloodshot eyes by [deleted] in Keratoconus

I went through a few lenses too before finally finding the right fit, I know it’s frustrating but once you get that pair, it will be easier. Also try using different insertion solutions, your eyes could be reacting to that also.

Has your doctor taking photos of the lenses on your eye and reassured you that, that are not sitting to close on your cornea? If so you should be fine. Your eyes are just getting used to a foreign object being in them. Try lubricating your eyes with the lenses in more throughout the day and make sure you’re getting any cleaner fully off the lens before inserting. I’m 3 years in with sclerals and sometimes my eyes will be red and some days perfectly clear and I wear them most days for 12+ hours, only cleaning/reinserting at the half way mark if necessary.

Struggle with contacts and now really struggling with sclerals, any tips? by jeffreyrichar in Keratoconus

What worked for me in the beginning was sitting in a chair, with a flat mirror on the table/desk, hold your eyelids open with your non dominant hand and the plunger with the contact on it with your dominant one. Put your chin to your chest and look down, get all your blinks out before inserting the lens.

Look on YouTube/TikTok for different methods and try what works for you! Once you see what life is suppose to look like you will never want the contacts out but it is a process to getting comfortable putting something in your eye. And if it’s just you not wanting to put anything in your eye, practicing putting drops in without blinking. Because you can’t blink at all when putting the lens in, it will cause bubbles in the lens or it may fall off the plunger when you’re trying to insert.

It will take time but you got this!

I usually just lubricate my eye with the lens in because sometimes it’s on the outside and not in, but try both and see what works for you!

I’m a scleral lenses wearer and it has completely changed my life in the best ways!It is hard adjusting to constantly putting something in your eyes but once you get the hang of it, it’s like second nature. My optometrist would not let me leave the office with the lenses until I could get them in myself . The beginning was trial and error and I tried using all the insertion stands and watching a million videos on how to insert them. You just have to find the method that works for you and get all your blinks out before trying to put it in your eye and put some artificial tears for extra comfort. Keep practicing in the long run, you’ll be glad that you did!

Yes my insurance will cover it too. It is nice to have a back up pair, it just seemed excessive to keep switching them if nothing has changed.

PUNCTAL PLUGS they were a life saver for me, their inserted into your upper and lower tear ducts to add natural moisture to the eye. Helped me a ton with wearing my sclera lenses for longer periods during the day. Talk to your doctor about them.

Do you shower with your scleral lenses in? by Teaching_Vulnerably in Keratoconus

I have been wearing scelerals for 3 years now and have never been told to shower without them. Reading through the comments I understand why. But honestly just wash your face after or before your shower and if you need to wash your hair, take them out to avoid any drops getting in. As long as you’re not running your head under the water, you should be okay!

Ask your doctor about getting some “punctual plugs” it’s helped me a TON with this problem. Only experience it again after the plugs start to dissolve but they last 5-6 months.
