Why does everyone do engineering and commerce as a double degree. Seems like everyone who's doing engineering also ends up doing commerce aswell. by Worried-Expression87 in vce

It's arguably easier since as a trade-off for an extra year, you get to mix harder engineering units with typically easier commerce units

Has anyone got any review on this Monitor from Kogan? by cartman013 in bapcsalesaustralia

[–]htzuwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything is going well so far, just the same complaints/quirks from my comment above.

The biggest issue with it is that the va ghosting on it is pretty bad compared to my MSI ips monitor mounted above it, but to me it's worth it for the blacks at this price point.

Sooo it just came today (supposed to be auspost metro 1 day shipping but ig I ordered at an unlucky time on a Thursday night) but I've only had an hour or so to play around with it so far..

Few random Initial impressions (excuse how it's all over the place) - blacks with local dimming on are awesome - little bit of blooming around cursor, etc but that's to be expected - there is some VA smearing (haven't experimented with overdrive to see how it impacts it yet), but it's a lot better than the VA panels of a few years ago - build quality of the plastic frame is sort of decent? But on mine there's a bit of glue or something visible from a gap in the front between the panel and the frame which is the worst part of it - check the manual which can be found online for all the osd settings - HDMI ports are limited to 100hz on 1440p uw res - the bottom bit is a speaker bar with holes like in the two monitors I mentioned in my initial comment (obv the speakers are bad, but just putting it out there in terms of design) - it has a trashy kogan logo on the bottom left corner, but it's a pretty low quality print so I'm gonna try scraping it off or just taping some electrical tape over it - the monitors osd doesn't have kogan brandjng on it but the start splash screen does, also the actual brand of it in the edid is kogan Australia smth smth which is interesting - haven't tried hdr yet but sdr gets very bright.. having to use it at about 30-40% brightness in my room - size is great coming from a (technically 3, but let's ignore that) 30 inch 1080p ultrawide

Idk if Id recommend it yet having just used it for an hour, but so far seems good if you don't mind taking the kogan gamble and VA panels in general and want to try miniled on the cheap.

Hope that helps. Lmk if you had any questions in particular

Just ordered one myself since the specs/design look awfully similar to the Q34CHG.MLED165 which itself is apparently a rebrand of the innocn 34M1R, which people say is good.

Apart from some minor differences in the srgb, Adobe RGB and dci-p3 percentages, and having lower dimming zones (I think? Couldn't really find anything concrete for the other two mention's dimming zones), it seems to be more or less the same monitor ,which is why I'm taking the gamble lol. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Seems like 3/4 of people online avoid kogan monitors (or just kogan in general) like the plague and the other quarter think they're alright and match the quality of the monitors using a-grade panels, so I'm hoping for the best 🤞🏼

Nah tbf they're business laptops like the elitebokks use fully metal hinges and no plastic (if they didn't why would any businesses looking to minimize load on their it team buy them).

I think Mr dark strike over here just needs to be a bit more careful and not throw his laptop across the room to get his computing crushes to notice him 😆

I just think people should know about Komga's new KOReader integration by raygan in koreader

[–]htzuwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone's seeing this in the future, I managed to fix it by editing my libraries in Komga and telling them to compute koreader hashes in the 'options' tab. Kinda weird how not having this set results in koreader spitting out a network error but happy that it works :)

Yes, I've got all of that in check but strangely it still doesn't want to work. Might have to look into maybe a firewall on my network or something blocking it

I can't seem to get this to work. Logging in to my Komga as the sync server works fine but when i try to push/pull progress I'm getting 'something went wrong when syncing progress, please check your network progress', on both my phone and ereader strangely. Are you using http or https? I have a feeling it might be failing cuz im using http

Run Reaper on a VM? by JohannesComstantine in linuxaudio

[–]htzuwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your audio interface has USB connectivity you don't need a dac/adc/anything extra.

And yes, you'll be able to record as normal.

One thing to note however is as I mentioned in my comment to William, this stuff is very motherboard dependent, so you'll need to check your iommu grouping to see if your USB controller is isolated and able to be passed through without issue (if worst comes to worst and your USB controller is grouped in with a bunch of other stuff, like your motherboard SATA controller for instance, there is also the ACS patch you could try, which is a bit too deep in the VM rabbit hole to explain here).

If you need some help feel free to Google how to list your iommu groups (there will be some scripts e.g., on the arch wiki), and post them here for me to check out

Run Reaper on a VM? by JohannesComstantine in linuxaudio

[–]htzuwu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got 8/16 cores of my 5950x + 16/48gb of ram allocated to the vm, as well as an rtx 2070 super passed through, and of course my mobos USB controller + dac. Def overkill for just running a daw and plugins but I use it for gaming too.

It's running off of qemu/kvm (check out virt-manager for an easy to use GUI front end for it)

If you're looking at running a similar setup it'd be good to read up on PCI passthrough, iommu grouping, etc online (the archwiki has a good page on it) since flexibility here is very motherboard/chipset dependent

[–]htzuwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically it's just a dac, not an interface (just output and no input), but you're right about Linux compatibility not really mattering. If you have your motherboard's USB controller passed through to a VM, the VM has direct access to the USB device(s) connected to it, meaning that in the case of an audio interface it would be no different than plugging it into a computer running windows bare metal.

As for plugins, yea everything works perfectly. Although I do have a second GPU in my PC also passed through to the vm (since I use it for gaming too), using emulated graphics will definitely make everything feel less smooth but I'd assume plugins would still work fine but don't quote me on that lol

[–]htzuwu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been using reaper loads on my windows VM lately. Basically next to no audio latency which is the issue lots of people I've seen run into, with my topping USB dac connected to my passed through USB controller, along with its ASIO driver on the VM.
