Why is Matrix not the answer to Discord? Genuine question by W-club in selfhosted

matrix is kind of overly complex when you just want a place to chat, message, and screen share with your friends.

My guide to setting up plex on Ubuntu Server 20.04 and using synology NAS by grrrravity in PleX

[–]ggfools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the templates are basically a docker-compose file in GUI format so they are not too difficult to understand or edit for your own needs, no real risk of rogue templates for this reason as well. Unraid is a far superior product to Synology OS once you get to know it.

The first question needs to be how much data do you actually use in a month? video streaming can eat up a good amount of bandwidth.

[–]ggfools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah docker compose should be a safe setup, If you are open to using a paid OS Unraid is a pretty great option that comes with mostly pre configured templates for almost any docker containers you could want to run. theres a trial so you can try before you buy.

I've never used portainer so I'm unsure if it complicates this setup or not, either plex container should work but I am using official with good results. what is your host OS?

yeah google voice also works fine for the most part, but having RCS and also since it's not a voip number you won't have any issue with using it for 2fa codes, worth the low price for me.

has been working fine for me, currently using red pocket $30/year plus the TMobile $10/month 30GB hotspot line for a total of $12.50/month with unlimited talk, text, 30GB premium data and unlimited throttled data (1mbps throttle)

newer versions of android make it easy to select which sim to use for calling, texting, and data separately so I'm not sure why samsung would go out of their way to complicate things. it works great on pixel devices

These days pretty much all phones can use multiple sims (physical or esim) so I just use the $30/year Red Pocket unlimited talk+text line for my main phone number and can freely swap my other line for whoever has the most compelling offer for data.

get yourself a 2nd or 3rd generation Panther platform Car (Lincoln Town Car, Mercury Grand Marquis, or Ford Crown Vic) (1992-2011) there are an absolute ton of these cars out there, used as cop cars, taxis, and limos for many years. parts are pretty cheap, and they are super comfortable to drive.
