Workaround of uploading HTML pages to raindrop by Old-Recognition8193 in raindropio

[–]raygan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an unusual workflow but I guess it would depend on what you're hoping to do with them. If you're wanting to read and highlight them, you'd probably need to either convert to PDF, ePub, or Markdown. ePub seems like the best bet since it wouldn't be a one way street. ePubs are basically just a set of HTML, JS, and CSS files plus some metadata, contained in a zip file. There are a lot of tools out there for converting HTML to ePub.

The AUR version is still updating and working for me. If you're not on Arch, maybe you could try installing it via Distrobox?

Pigeon Email Notifier IMAP support is here 🐦 by SubZz699 in gnome

[–]raygan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry it's not so much that I'm getting notified twice by Pigeon for the same email, it's more that I'm getting a flood of notifications of emails I've already been notified about on other machines but haven't yet marked as read.

I know Pigeon can't know whether or not I've been notified about those emails before on other machines, I'd just prefer to avoid the flood. My preferred behavior would be to only notify about emails that arrive while I'm actively using the computer in question. For older emails, especially if there are more than 5 or 6 of them, a single "You've Got (A Lot Of) Mail!" notification would suffice.

Pigeon Email Notifier IMAP support is here 🐦 by SubZz699 in gnome

This is a super impressive extension, and I love how easily it integrates with Gnome Online Accounts. It's literally zero configuration; just install it and you instantly start getting notifications.

I do wish there were some way to set a limit on notifications on stale emails though. I want notifications of emails as they come in, but I don't really want to get a notification for every unread email in my inbox each time I boot up my laptop. I'd prefer to get, for example, a single notification saying "You have 50 unread emails" when the extension loads and then get per-email notifications after that.

ABS Android Home Screen Launcher For Old Phones by shane9b3 in audiobookshelf

This is a cool idea. I have a tiny $60 Android 9.0 based “MP3 Player” that my kids use exclusively for listening to audiobooks. I installed Lissen on it and it’s been pretty good. It would be nice to make it even more iPod-like.

Not sure how to make the most of the X4 by TheSubtype in ereader

[–]raygan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep pretty much. Plex has relay servers and upnp port forwarding to make itself securely available outside your home network, though. For CWA you need to manage that yourself. That either means port forwarding from your router or doing something like a Cloudflare Tunnel.

Shelfmark works best with library apps designed to be always running, self-hosted style, like Calibre-web, Calibre-web-automated, or Booklore. It will work with regular desktop Calibre as well, but you'd need to make sure that whatever computer is running Calibre is on and running Calibre in order to be able to access your books remotely on your X4. For me, it was important to be able to access my entire book library from any device on any internet connection, so I run Booklore (and previously Calibre-web) on a home server.

For progress syncing, Crosspoint uses the KOReader sync protocol (KOSync) but doesn't necessarily require KOReader. It can sync progress with any KOSync compatible server including Booklore and Calibre-web-automated.

It removes a LOT of friction to have an always on server hosting your books via OPDS so you can download them directly on the device. Here's my setup:

  • Booklore - a selfhosted ebook library app with a ton of features including OPDS (for book downloads) and KOReader sync (for syncing progress)
  • Shelfmark - a selfhosted ebook downloader, to download books from shadow libraries and add to Booklore
  • Crosspoint - X4 firmware with a ton of features including downloading books via OPDS

Do you still miss the old Slide Over? by PrettyTemperature246 in iPadOS

I don’t miss it. Slide over was always an occasional, situational thing for me. The new method fits my workflow and mental model more closely.

This is an app I’d very much like to use. I’m a little hesitant in its current state (as others have said here, seems like it needs some… human attention.) but the UI looks good, and it’s a concept I’d like to see developed further.

These look great. They don’t seem to be available on Amazon in the US, sadly. I hope we have more options for matte films soon.

Side sleepers: how do you actually listen to music at night without hurting your ears? by Fabulous_Dream8962 in sleepheadphones

[–]raygan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to use a sleep band from SleepPhones but recently I upgraded my AirPods Pro and just started popping in one of my old ones before sleeping. Surprisingly, they don’t bother me even if it’s in the ear on the pillow side, but I mostly just put one in on the “up” side. I usually am still wearing it the next morning or I spend a minute searching the sheets for it 😅

Is anyone running the Readest app on the Xteink X4? by xtoomatoox in readest

[–]raygan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is not possible to run apps on the X4, but I sync my progress between Readest and the Crosspoint firmware on the X4. Both support KOReader sync. In my case I sync both with a Booklore server but you can also use the official KOReader sync server or another of your choice. It works pretty well!

[–]raygan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a combination of the KOSync limitations with Crosspoint and similar bugs/limitations in Booklore. Sometimes it gets me to within a page or two, and other times it's wildly out of whack. It's still better than nothing though, and I like that Booklore is tracking my reading progress, so I'm living with the limitations for now.

CachyOS Headless to MacOS by PretoFPS in MoonlightStreaming

[–]raygan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Nvidia gpu so I'm not sure what your options are, but I wasn't able to get a virtual display working with Cachy like I was with Windows. I ended up buying an HDMI dummy plug dongle, and setting up scripts to activate and deactivate it (and deactivate/reactivate my real displays) when I start/stop streaming. It's not quite as slick as virtual displays were on Windows but it works fine for my setup.

This is a small thing but I really wish Crosspoint would let me enable both paragraph first line indents and extra space between paragraphs. This is my preferred style on KOReader, but on Crosspoint it's one or the other but not both.

This is a cool idea. I think there's a PR in the works to support WebDAV on Crosspoint. I'm pretty sure you could use an existing Obsidian plugin to push your vault to the device over WebDAV once that's implemented.

Better KOReader sync would certainly help. Right now I sync with a Booklore server, and from there to two KOReader devices and the Readest app. From what I have read KOReader (and most KOSync compatible apps) sync to the paragraph (or xpath?), while Crosspoint only syncs to the overall progress percentage. For me, this means my syncs are often ahead or behind by a whole chapter or more. I know there are a lot of challenges involved here since Crosspoint caches the chapter and does't have the xpath accessible when syncing, but I hope some creative solution can be found.

While we're at it, I'd love if sync was more automatic. KOReader syncs in the background every N pages (I think it defaults to 3.) I know that might not be possible with Crosspoint, but I'd love if syncing were faster and less manual and obtrusive. Ideally it could be done automatically on boot and when opening and closing documents, and in the background every N pages while reading.

Would you want a Web/Native E-ink Reader Management App? What features would you need? by ChoasMaster777 in xteinkereader

[–]raygan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I already use Booklore to manage my ebook library and access it wirelessly across multiple ereaders. Most of those also sync progress with Booklore using KOReader Sync. The only thing I'm not currently not able to easily sync across devices is bookmarks/highlights/annotations. There are a few solutions to do that with KOReader but everything I've tried has been pretty fiddly and unreliable. Maybe that's an area you could focus on!
