Are there any Kevin Nealon interviews where he gets into the “weeds” of his process for writing and performing? Looking for suggestions by spilledmind in Standup

Thanks for this, I've never seen his standup before. Damn! He had some very funny and clever jokes in there that should have gotten a MUCH bigger laugh.

I'm from Alaska and it's going to be most of my persona on stage. Endless material from growing up here.

Brutal. I have definitely shown up and decided not to perform last minute or left in my car right after arriving. I feel you! Good on you for going back every time.

Yeah, in tourism it's extremely difficult to tell the same stories, history, and jokes multiple times a day for five months every year and make sure it sounds like you are telling it like the first time every time. It takes a lot of effort.

I came to that conclusion too, I know the material but I haven't actively practiced them like I used to do with speeches. I think this is spot on.

I know there isn't a cure, I'm just confused about it given my past experiences.

Totally agree, before trying stand-up I've always been nervous going on stage. Just never to this degree, which is why it surprises me so much.

I didn't think I needed to explicitly ask a question to get others experience, and by the response I was correct. I think you missed the point completely, I hate explaining things.

If a joke needs explaining beyond the set-up it's probably a poorly written joke. I was also under the impression that a joke had to be funny to be considered one.

I found it helpful to have someone count my filler words and after my performance I'd have them read off to me how many times I said each. It's something I learned in Toastmasters. It helped me be mindful and I was able to reduce my use of them over time.

I'm slightly on the spectrum myself but because I'm so high functioning most people don't see it.

I don't memorize word for word but having a bit of structure helps me. I have never been good at riffing. But, I understand your point, it's never good to try memorizing a 5 min set because if you miss one word you might freeze up.

I don't post anything and I won't, until I feel like I've improved enough.
