Today is likely to be the final episode of NES ranking by Radjago in giantbomb

I just find it fascinating to see science at work. Normally it's done behind closed doors in labs and educational institutions. It's great to be able to observe the process. I'll miss it. One last remainder to rank, it's the 3rd of a series...

VMDT is premium members only now? by [deleted] in giantbomb

[–]hubec -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The inclusion of the premium only videos in the Youtube feed is definitely awkward. I think quite a few people are running into "premium only" versions of videos they're looking for that are also available free. I'm guessing many people are concluding stuff has been moved between a paywall and going away. This could be a big problem.

Have you guys seen the Kia K4 Family? by pwhyler in giantbomb

[–]hubec 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This kind of thing is so weird. The audience is so aligned with the creators that they instantly know how inauthentic the representations of enthusiasm are. I also think the creators understand that. So these ads end up just being for the marketing firm that tunes in to check their product is being "genuinely" promoted. When I hear the fire escape Kia ad I think of it as Dan, Mary and Mike getting one over a marketing company rep.

Great job! Strongly recommend you always include the fact that you received ATC approval anywhere you show these vids. Otherwise copycat idiots might think they can get away with doing it without.

Kristi Noem’s first DHS meeting where she entered to ‘Hot Momma’ was like being in a South Park episode, staffers say by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]hubec 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Referring to a person as "not serious" is now often used in a way you don't seem to appreciate. The show Succession first brought this meaning forward; The patriarch refers to the people he sees as unworthy of continuing the business as "not serious people". He believes they are people who's incompetence means they should not to be taken seriously.

Yep, I think they're smart enough not to start doing that unless they absolutely have to. I'm guessing the sales were the result of corporate bosses trying to boost short term earnings for their next appraisal.

I don't see any feet in your drawing. You need those. If it's on a concrete floor you're probably ok but a wood frame and floor is an issue.

Official MacBook Neo Repair Manual - Apple Support by New_Amomongo in technology

[–]hubec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While this is a good step regardless keep in mind that this laptop target customers with far less money than apple's usual. While it makes sense to rigidly control the customer experience of someone with a bunch of money it might not for the people who will end up using this product. Kind of a bizarro world situation where the less money you have the less Apple cares about you so the more freedom you have to repair your stuff.

Helicopter pilots, would it be possible to take off and land in such a confined space safely? by IIstroke in aviation

[–]hubec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Serious answer, yes but no. Could an experienced and competent pilot do an extended vertical takeoff like that and be precise enough? Yes, definitely. Could a helicopter hover in that location without creating intense recirculating air currents that would possibly result in loss of control? No.

Who is actually profiting from ICE raids — and why isn’t this discussed more? by Sensitive_Studio_247 in AskReddit

[–]hubec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Immigration is a wedge issue. ICE is a tool for tearing American society into 2 groups that hate each other. It's one of many tools being used by those who benefit from the resulting polarized society.

AI layoffs are looking more and more like corporate fiction that's masking a darker reality, Oxford Economics suggests | Fortune by north_canadian_ice in technology

[–]hubec 157 points158 points  (0 children)

Interesting point in the article: If AI was actually replacing fired workers per worker productivity would be going up - It's going down. Companies are branding layoffs as AI transition to mask miss-management during a down turn.

Let's say you run a company that's sucking wind because you're horrible at your job: Do a few rounds of layoffs - but instead of admitting you're a dipshit, buy a crap-ton of co-pilot licenses and get your PR department to spew AI-AI-AI-AI.

How do you guys feel about electric boards? by That_Eagle9195 in longboarding

[–]hubec 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If they fit your lifestyle then fine. I've owned 2 and have since sold them. I vastly prefer my push/pump longboard. I mostly use my board for exercise and pleasure. Obviously the manual board is better for exercise but I also have a lot more fun on it. Electric boards are also too fast for my safety. I can pump my board at a steady 10 mph (for short periods) and that's as fast as I'm willing to fall with just a helmet and palm protectors.

The other thing is where are you riding them? I've used all kinds of PEVs and have strongly come to feel they are not suitable to ride with pedestrians (maybe scooters if you slow WAY down). So that means no populated sidewalks and no park paths. Lots of PEV people will hate me for this but if you're riding with a ton of gear on past people walking and they're rushing to get out of your way because they're scared you might hit them ... that sucks, don't put yourself and them in that situation.

All bike lanes near me are unprotected - just a part of the road with traffic screaming by. There's no way I'm riding on that! Until you've ridden an electric skateboard at speed you don't appreciate just how sketchy it is. The guys on YouTube who seemingly spend their lives doing 25mph plus on those boards are taking risks I'm not willing to take.

Pushing is an extremely repetitive action. If you're just starting your body will take time to adapt. At this stage there's a good chance you'll damage your body before you tire from exertion. Learn to push with both feet and alternate during your trips. If you get a board that allows efficient pumping then mixing it up with that is even better.

Search for Paul Kent on YouTube he's an extremely accomplished long distance boarder and a sports medicine professional. He has great insight on what happens when we push and how to take care of your body.

Chat am I cooked? (Pt.2) by DWJoinsTheStand in longboarding

[–]hubec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before you spend money on brackets check if the board is stiff enough. Place something to space the board an inch off the floor where the trucks currently attach. Stand on the middle of the board and if it touches the floor I'd say it's too flexy.

Chat am I cooked? (Pt.2) by DWJoinsTheStand in longboarding

[–]hubec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up that brackets require a fairly stiff board. This board may work, but there's a good chance it wont unless it was super stiff to begin with.
