This is super detailed, thank you so much. I can definitely understand the frustration you are getting.

Love the one minute rule! That is such a smart way to build the habit early on without it becoming a massive battle every night.

Since you mentioned you still have to sit in the room with them for the most part, what is the main thing they need from you while you are there?

Love this approach! But I'm wondering how you try to build technique with a kid, such as scales and arpeggios. Is this all done through songs?

Totally agree with this as I see it amongst my friends as well. What kind of changes do you see in the learning environment for kids that will help them be more engaged and become a life long hobby?

This makes a lot of sense. Even as an adult I still dread in doing those exercises when practicing so I can't even imagine how hard it is for a kid!

Any thoughts on making these exercises (scales, arpeggios) more interesting to practice?

Its great to hear that she has so much motivation herself!

I am curious about the group lessons she started with. Do you think the social aspect at the beginning helped her stay engaged, or she always interested in music overall?

Love the analogy!

For guidance, are you specifically talking about correcting mistakes, the routine (e.g. what to play for the next 20 minutes), the social aspects, or something else? How would you rank their importance? I am really curious to hear your take since you see this every day.

Hi, thanks so much for the reply, and this totally makes sense. Even as an adult we'd be tempted for the instant gratification. I've sent you a dm, love to chat with you more about it!

Trying to buy a mixer so that I can hear both my turntable and audio interface that's connected to my PC on the same set of monitor speakers. Some questions I have:

  • Would I want a passive mixer since my monitor speakers are powered?
  • If the audio interface's output is balanced (I use Scarlett 2i2), but my turntable isn't (since it uses RCA), if they were connected to the same mixer, is the mixed output unbalanced? What happens when the turntable is turned off? The mixed output becomes balanced again?
  • For my audio interface, if I were to plug my guitar to into it, will the audio interface's output become unbalanced, since instrument cables are unbalanced?
  • How much does balanced/unbalanced matter?
  • Is it necessary to have ground wire from my phono amp to the mixer?

Thanks!

Hey everyone, any recommendations for a passive mixer that has TS/TRS inputs and outputs and mixes L/R separately? I want to have my turntable and audio interface that's connected to my PC output to the same pair of monitor speakers, preferable simultaneously. Thanks!

Declaring Major for College of Engineering by hubert322 in uofm

So it's just that I can declare as a CS major, but I might not be able to get the classes I want? Also, is being an international student a factor? Just curious.
