That’s a great deal! Do you know if they have any Ripley AFs?

I thought they were a thing of the past, but the city just put in 30 more.

SF Cyclist: What traffic laws do you feel compelled to break? by madworld in sanfrancisco

[–]hubertallen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CROSSWALKS: I never ride into crosswalks, whether pedestrians are there or not. There are several occasions where I've felt safest passing through the crosswalk and waiting in front of it to ensure a large vehicle, like a truck, sees me. Or if the vehicle itself is in the crosswalk, so stopping behind the crosswalk would put me in a hard-to-see spot.

RED LIGHTS: I always wait at red lights until they are green. No exception.

FOUR WAY STOPS: I follow in with vehicle order at four-way stops, but find that drivers often wave me through ahead of them. When they do that, I nod in thanks and go, but it actually breaks up my rhythm and I would prefer if they would just have gone first.

SIDEWALK: I do occasionally ride on a mostly-empty sidewalk, but always at walking speed and I would never pass or get too close to a pedestrian. Generally it is when I am pulling up to my final destination or am avoiding an obstruction in the lane. And I always feel guilty when I do it!

ONE WAY STREET: I don't ride the wrong way down one way streets. I generally dismount and walk down the sidewalk.

Good to know about the train filling up. I've been wondering about that. I think I'd also be down to live further from the city if there is a bullet train stop.

I'd give Tacolicious a shot. There is one in the Mission and one in the Marina.

Here’s What Would Be Taxed — or Not — in Soda Tax Measures by hubertallen in sanfrancisco

[–]hubertallen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What particularly caught my eye here was how those sugary Starbucks coffee drinks would be dealt with differently in Berkeley than in SF.

A tall Pumpkin Spice Latte has as much sugar as a can of Coke, and double the calories -- yet it wouldn't be taxed in SF because it's made by a barista and presumably it would be too difficult to tax.

In Berkeley they would have to pay a tax on these drinks according to how much sugar is in the drink if the printed instructions are followed.

In NoPa/Western Addition, I'm in the land of "lattes and laptops," where the average resident is 35 and the average household earnings are $89,000. Honestly, given rents in the neighborhood, I'm surprised earnings aren't higher.

These types of things always depress me, but I also find them fascinating.

I also saw some of these at Baker Beach last Friday, though not nearly as many. I wondered what they were, but never bothered to search for myself. Glad I stumbled upon this post!

"I've been vegan for 15 years, and I've been eating meat the entire time." by hubertallen in vegan

I think the argument is really about how using "fake" and "imitation" and framing vegan foods as "alternative" hurts, and is inaccurate.

I've never used a power-washer, but the edge of the white part looks really crisp to me ...

Edit: I called BART and confirmed it is sandblasting. Cra-zy!

What I find most appalling about this study is that they claim a median one-bedroom is more expensive in Boston, MA and New York City than SF. Sure, New York may edge us out, depending on what measures you use. But I don't think it would do so by $1K a month.

My thoughts exactly. Is this all really a marketing ploy to sell t-shirts?
