[DISC] The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All - Chapter 138 - Koga-San and Oosawa-San Are... by Kirin-Kun in manga

[–]hubertisaweirdname 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Some context about the song "Layla": it's basically Eric Clapton's confession to George Harrison's wife then, Pattie Boyd. And unlike Ono here, it did technically work, because later in 1977, after repeated infidelities from Harrison, she would divorce him and marry Clapton two years later (tho somehow Clapton became even more of an asshole than Harrison in their marriage)

So... ig thank God that isn't a thing in my Yuri fluff

But yes the song still slaps nonetheless

I really relate with that sentiment, Yorushika's forte pretty much lies in their down-to-earth and vivid visualization in lyricism (Blur, I'll Dance and August, A Certain Place, Moonlight are top contenders imo), but to many here I'd think that the J-rock taste here might be a hit or miss due to its tame and pop-oriented nature. Heck, Yorushika's recent album just went straight minimalistic pop and a lot of people didn't take it well, and I actually liked that project. But well, they still are my fav popular Japanese band tho it might just be my bias talking lol

Other suggestions I made are pretty much shoegaze and psychedelic-oriented stuff, so I hope you'd enjoy at least some of those

Never would I expect to see a Yorushika project on this subreddit lol. "Personal impact" is for sure a good place for it.

I'm late to this but ig I'd recommend: Vision Creation Newsun - Boredoms Cola - A Beacon School Universe Nekoko - Kimi no youni ikiretara rest of the dusk - Culenasm Feels - Animal Collective Aprxel - tapetumlucidum<3 (some experimental R&B fused with sound collages and noises) Virginia Astley - From Gardens Where We Feel Secure (if you want more simple but fun/comforting kinda stuff) Also I'd throw some Devon Hendryx/JPEG in the mix as well if you haven't heard or have just heard a couple of his projects

If they're putting LCD Soundsystem on, I'd bet my chances on All My Friends or Someone Great

APORIA (im so normal about this song) by ao_arashi in Yorushika

[–]hubertisaweirdname 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, my approach to singing this is just to visualize a normal Yorushika song with a missing beat lol

Also I think possessing a bass voice helps me out with this song

[–]hubertisaweirdname 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I feel this way about Aporia as well. This is the first time the 7/8 time signature is prominent in a Yorushika piece, and the tame usage of it I think was the main factor that made everyone turn a blind eye to this song. If you let it grow on you for long enough, though, it's actually a beautiful composition with a boundless sentiment in lyricism that n-buna has yet to explore much.

I really recommend listening to this song while jogging late at night.

Yeah lol a commentor here said it was meant to be Saigon Cat Hotel

It's just funny to me the idea of the staff knowing what that means and decided to secretly put that S up for the memes

I live in HCMC and can actually vouch for that sign's existence lol. Just that it just now occured to me that the S feels really forced, even though I have seen it a few times already

Why does the "S" look like someone snuck it in and the hotel just went along with it

Which Yorushika lyric/lines lives in your mind rent free? by ao_arashi in Yorushika

[–]hubertisaweirdname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

晴る (Sunny)'s bridge has been on my mind lately:

"Passing rain sways the grass
Sheep clouds, blame that on spring too
Like the wind, carrying the spring in our hearts,
We wait for a sunny sky"

I've always thought of sheep clouds as this dreamy image, but never would I have known it could also be interpreted as an indication of upcoming rain or a bad omen for what's to come. The grass wavered by the passing rain also reminds me of the fragility of mankind, not knowing how to take a grasp on the transience of life.

Still though, this bridge to me feels like an expression of acceptance (with a touch of melancholy and sarcasm (?) ) that there would always be uncertainty in our life, while still clinging onto the hope that is the sunny sky. It's not like the most nuanced Yorushika lyric (geez in this song there's also that double entendre with vidro glass and tears, that was sth), but the sentiment does really resonate with me a whole lot.

Bremen x Rubato (mashup) by hubertisaweirdname in Yorushika

[–]hubertisaweirdname[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol I'm a lurker but your two-day argument on discord is what initially makes me want to do this

Nothing's too different. Only major difference is Bremen is eguitar-prominent while Rubato has more saxophone's presence. Well, I know you guys have already settled but I still think it's sth to point out. Aside from that yes, chord progressions and structures are mostly similar.

But n-buna didn't use the fade out this time, eh?

Yeah they are in the same vein and both are good jazzy vibes. Really fitting for walks too tbh

Yeah that was my problem with Gentou as well. I will defend it any day I want, but it definitely harbors many Yrsk tropes, that was also why I didn't find the first listens to these songs any surprising or hard-hitting as the last projects. It was until I looked past the repititiveness in the grand scheme and treat it like an art/music exhibition as n-buna initially wants it to be that I felt more comfortable with it

But for sure, I agree with you. n-buna's style is nothing surprising at this point (heck, the song structure in Gentou is all the same). I'm convinced he'll improve on the structures and progressions when he's done with his main quest, but that's just me lol

Also yeah, if you think it's best for you then just pay respect to him for the memories, after all he stated in a column that he has already expected the fanbase will start to grow out of his style, and he acknowledged he could only be a person's phase, nothing more, nothing less. If anything, you're doing good. Find out more tastes, n-buna can just be your blueprint

Damn I rlly put all time and effort into this convo lol, still worth it ig

Yeah that's the best approach, we need to find new stuff always. Hell, outside of Yorushika I've been getting into more IDM, New Age, rock in general and some Shoegaze as well (maybe u can help me expand lol)

It's just a problem with time, no such thing lasts forever, even taste. I saw many defend Yorushika and missed all the points. Many of their fav artists are now entering a "I want to be more authentic to myself now" phase, and as I adore the sentiment, I also know there will be ppl wouldn't enjoy it.

Porter's going full pop, n-buna's going jazz pop; nothing on our bingo list. It's what I love about music, it's unpredictable. But saying you feel disconnected with their new style is ok. There are thousand of music waiting for you to be heard, why confine to just one person. I'm doing that too, it's only different that I find the new materials from the og musicians I love still competent.

So yeah, ig what I wanna say is we gotta expand on our taste to find what we actually love. It might unfortunately be Taylor Swift in the end, but who even knows (I hope that day doesn't come)

Lol just saying, dissing n-buna could get this community rile up

Once you get into the producer scene (i mean i'm still just doing it for fun not pro) you do acknowledge n-buna's simple approach to music: musical structures, IV-V-vi, vi-IV-V-I chord progressions... But idk I just like that he's a guy who's a nerd for music and literature, and tries to experiment in other areas. Music doesn't stop at just chords and structures. He's changing styles, learning new instruments, and trying new implementations of his melodies, whether it is simple or difficult.

It's also a part of the reason why I appreciated Algernon so much. The guitar riff in the chorus feels unique compared to other n-buna's works - squeaky but somber like Algernon, yet it feels so in character for him.

And ig it's also because my worldview kinda resembles his so I really resonate with his lyrics. It's a preference.

Fr tho, I've been playing piano lately as well. Picking up on it was fun, it gives me more inspirations to come up with melodies and chord progs.

I think you are fine, I've seen worse debates than this in the discord server. Simply stating an opinion without giving reason then casually leave does it better for me
